We’re Ladi (from Czechia) & Margaret (from USA) and we’re a location independent couple of 4+ years, currently spending 2020 in eastern Czech Republic due to the pandemic. This channel is centered around our favorite things: eBikes, campervans, and cats (mostly Millie, lol) Our world has definitely changed a lot since Covid-19 impacted our travel plans, but we hope to soon be back on the road with our awesome eBikes and little Millie Kua Maha, who is quite the traveler herself, and probably the most popular one in our little trio. The CyberBikes have taken up a lot of time this week, so this was a nice vid to make in the meantime. AND we have a new ceiling happening at the workshop soon... For two people who love to focus on one thing at a time, we've certainly stretched ourselves like crazy with multiple projects! There will be a lot of diff types of videos this year and I really hope you enjoy them all :)

Had been watching vanlife/tour vids for months, perhaps a year (back to late summer/fall 2018) before getting serious mid-Jun '19. Put a deposit down on a new 4x4, 3500, ext, HD, Sprinter cargo (think Snow & Curt) and started doing design research. Found Freedom Vans' Fitz Roy and fell in love. Took delivery in Nov '19, selected builder Feb '20, went under the knife Mar '20. Covid struck. Picked up Lily, who now weighs more than 5 tons, Oct '20. Discovered Margaret's tour review's somewhere very late in the process. 3, 4 months ago? Whenever, well after construction had begun. Its now mid-Jan '21. Yesterday my wife says, we made lots of mistakes, lots of bad decisions. Ugh!

I have been building vans out foryears and the biggest mistake people make is trying to fit too much in a van build. ALWAYS tell people to srart small and you can always add on. People get way to hung up on size, features, ect instead of “by having this van what can I do now”. These videos are really good in showing good and bad. In my humble opinion people see these “master craftsman” videos and fall in love with it vs remembering why they are even doing this. My two cents. Godd luck with your mistakes LOL. I am sure you will enjoy it.

For that swivel table, if you had a swivel base that allowed you to not only go up and down, side to side, but also you can fold it vertically when the passenger seat was in the forward position, then the table could fold up vertically flat up to the back of the seat, and not impede either getting into the living portion of the van, nor would it get in the way of the sliding door.

Yay, VTR is back! I've missed it! I love to watch van tours, but WHY must van owners point out every item in every cabinet. ("So here we keep our coffee, spices, rice, tea, cheese grater, yoga mat, sweatpants, blah, blah, blah .....") Just show us the dang cabinet! Someone really needs to tell them .... maybe that could be you? You're so good at critiquing in a kind way. Anyway, welcome back!

Maybe a nice idea to incorperate in your current build: using the actuators to tilting the back of the bed, next to lifting the entire bed. The actuators will go in so you will just need to make a locking mechanism to fix or release the tilting part of the bed. 👌

You and Ladi should think about a fold-away table like some airplanes have! It could fold in half or quarters and get tucked into the floor or chair or something neat

In my motor home I had a large picture hinged that was in the lounge area other side was a hook ie inside the cab, it with a jacket on it hid the door .

The Yolo family Vanlife has an awesome Van tour. It has a different layout than other van tours because they have 2 kids. I think you may like all their small attention to details. Recommending for the next season if you have time.

I really like your content, including the van tours. Jarrod Tocci just highlighted a really nice van 6 days ago of a single woman who often has her adult son join her. I thought the design had lots of potential and a nice use of separated living space for privacy between two people who might not want to sleep together. Loved the long seat and long counter. The placement of a cutout across from the business area of the kitchen seemed to give a little more room in a hallway design van. Might want to check it out. Also, it’s insulated for winter. Curious about what she does for water.

Great compilation. I can't do van life for health reasons, but if I could this would be a big help in designing one. If I could, I would and because I'm tall so I would definitely want a van I could stand in.

I've really enjoyed these. Highlighting some of the pluses and minuses of these van builds is really helpful. I've got my own play list of 'van build ideas'. One that caught my attention was @FireFlyandI (Firefly and I) for bed placement and electrical panel and wardrobe placement. She has the bed lengthwise, at the back and is using the 'bump-out' spaces for electrical panel (passenger side) and wardrobe (driver side). It's a really well done van. You can tell it's not her first, and I really enjoyed her video too.

I was just wondering have you guys calculated the projected weight of everything you'll be adding to the van? I mean, some things can add really a lot of weight, and you might not even notice; e.g. in many projects I see wooden panelling on the walls (choosing the right thickness or if it's oak or pine can make a lot of difference), then there are those thick counter tops (especially stone), and also those rather large water tanks... Add to that all the tools, gadgets, bikes, textiles, food and of course two people and a cat - it soon becomes really heavy. It's just - I know vans are designed to carry weight, but not really a lot of it and not all the time. Also, as far as I know, only Iveco vans are still built on classical chassis, while all other vans available in Europe (including Fiat/Citroën/Peugeot/RAM) are monocoque. And monocoque vans are much more sensitive to uneven weight distribution and overweight than vans with a chassis. There's also the question of fuel consumption which is very much influenced by weight. I know that industrial camper van producers put a lot of weight on weight reduction (yeah, I know XD) somthey use extra light and extra thin materials wherever they can. I don't see this with private conversions and that just makes me nervous, lol. Sorry for the long question (rant?). :/

I really do not understand why on earth people do these pull out tables. In almost the same space you could fit a table with folding legs and be able to sit wherever you want and not yust behind your car with open backdoors. But everyone thinks different. I'm happy to take my table to the side, the front or the beach with me with the same use of space.

These sliders add also weight to the table. You can do the legs easy with 1x2" wooden beams. I've done it with aluminum profiles (in Germany called "bosch profile" ) and a friend of mine with waterpipes like the swivel table in the video. You can scream them into the matching counterpart mounted under the tabeltop. I think the weight is almost the same. And if you don't need a big nice wooden DIY tabletop (that's the big part of the weight) you can buy a table out of the camping/outdoor industry. Search for one that fits or better search the different standard sizes and build your table spot to fit.

I have a question that speaks to your point with trying van life first. I know you went from camping to van life. If I enjoy camping for long periods of time, would you say it's fair to say van life (or bus life) would be an upgrade? My partner and I are planning to build out a bus this year and hadn't discussed trying mobile living first.

12:39 It also happens in Portugal... Unfortunately the government just passed a law prohibiting overnight stays in vans and motorhomes, unless in campsites or authorized areas (which almost do not exist).

That's because people who live in vans leave human waste all over the place, I was at a couple of lovely places that were destroyed because of the rubbish left there by vans. Even the locals are taking action now, slashing tyres at night and putting glue in locks.

@@galdessa1 of course there's people that abuse, and they should be fined. Mainly because what you're describing happen in a natural reserve that's a touristic area where overnight parking and camping is prohibited. But I think it's a lot farfetched to prohibit overnight parking all over the country just because there were problems in some turistic areas. There should be rules, of course, but banning everything can not be the answer.

For your passenger table. Why not put in a table with a mechanism and “storage” similar to the way they hide tables on trains? You could make it with a swivel extension for extra space much as your old table had. But you could hide it either on the side or perhaps on the back of your chair. I think trains should be your inspiration for what to do.

Slide out table outside is not practical. The usage is very minor. Having a deck on the top of a van roof is dumb as fck. Put solar panels is more practical
