Thank you Joshua! Yes it's quite expensive and I can't imagine I would use it every day, so it makes sense to rent it for those specific times you want the look. Overall it's a great lens.
Love the shots and review / info Neal! A quick question, with the 1/4 black pro mist do you remember or did you get the impression the blooming from that filter helped control / soften the horizontal lines in the flares at all ie because of the blooming does it soften them ever so slightly? I love an anamorphic look when it comes to the bokeh characteristics and the edge softness / distortion / vignetting but personally prefer a bit milder flare if possible. Or al least less of a sharp edge to the flaring / not looking so much like a JJ Abrams Sci Fi flick (not that I don't love JJ Abrams's works though haha)... Just curious if you've ever felt like it made a difference to the softness of the streaks of the flare?? Cheers mate. Glad I found your channel!!
Thanks! I wouldn't say the BPM filter really affected the horizontal streaks that much to be honest. The Vazen lens flare is pretty noticeable, more so than controlled I would say. I didn't have a matte box at the time which I'm sure would help minimize the flaring.
Hallo. Please HELP I have Lumix gh5s and Anamorphic objektiv Vazen 40mm 1.8X. Output video signal to external displays (Atomos and Fellworld) allways show only 50% off Aspect ratio. With desqeeze 1.8X. I have 2.0 HDMI Kabel. I testet all of possibles settings on camera and external Monitor and didnt fou solutions. Is this some technical or software issue? Thank You
This lens is so close to being spot-on but the bokeh is unforgivable, a deal breaker. From the footage I’ve seen, the middle is like weird diamond shapes, and the edges are jacked like some elements are out of whack. The 40mm bokeh shape is definitely nicer. Edit to not be completely negative: That being said, your footage is some of the nicest looking I’ve seen from this lens.
I appreciate it! I see what you mean though, there are some big differences between this and the 40mm. I think that in terms of lens character the 40mm is much more pleasing on the eyes especially in the bokeh character. Might have to do with this one being a wider lens and how the glass elements work together inside.
the oval bokeh at the left and right edges 100% should be like this, if u have seen the anamorphic GRANDPA - panavision C series, the edge bokeh of wide angle length like 40mm and probably 50mm r ALL like this...but i do have same question about the rest of oval bokeh, why do they sometimes look like diamonds sometimes look like beans??? would the owner of this video answer it? thank u : )
@@dagkaszlikowski8358 I guess that means a lot of people are shooting wide open in broad daylight way too much. Would love to try this lens for a day and see what 2.8/4 are like.
Good question Omie, apparently the Pocket 4K is not the best option for anamorphic work because of the massive crop when you film 4:3 mode. You'd be better off with something open gate like a GH5/GH5s or ZCam. Hello Neal, I saw that you use Tiffen ProMist. Do you think it is better to have the clip "clean" and reproduce the effect in post or to use a filter like Tiffen ProMist in shooting is more effective? Thank you
It depends really on your preference, if you'd prefer to have a clean clip down the line I wouldn't add the ProMist. In some cases, the effect with the ProMist is very strong. I do like the bloomy highlights when I use it, but I can see how it doesn't fit the vibe for every single shoot. Like you said you can achieve something similar in post if needed.
You have good eyes, I didn't notice it then but I do now. On most of these wide shots I was shooting f4 or f5.6. I wonder if an element of the lens is out of whack. Thanks for noting it!
Both, it depends. When I just use the camera (no monitor) I use the 2x squeeze display setting on the camera since it's so similar to 1.8x. With the Atomos monitor I use 1.8x setting and it's perfect.
I prefer using the GH5S mainly because it's going to get a better image in low light. The aspect ratio remains the same. I think that colors were subtly enhanced in the GH5S, more pleasing out of the box. Only wish the GH5S has IBIS like the OG GH5, but it's a trade-off.
I'd say the 40mm is my favorite one of the bunch. I think the focal length is versatile and that's my first interest. It's pretty huge but if you rig the camera for it, it makes for a killer combo.

Hi Neil thanks for this very informative video. Nicely done. I am wondering how the vazen is with GH5's stabilization which only has the anamorphic stabilization options 1.33x and 2.0x. Do you use the anamorphic stabilization at all? Or do you just go for the normal spherical setting?
Hey Joey, thanks! I use the anamorphic 2.0x setting and from my shooting out and about it's been quite nice. I haven't really 'tested' it but from what I noticed, there were no weird issues to describe.
