Taking a closer look at the difference between Gate (length) and Step Len(gth) within the Vector Sequencer.

8:00 Shortcuts for setting gate length

Eratta:
I referred to the "frowny face" gate setting as "legato". Technically it would be a "tie" if the pitches are the same or a "slur" if they are different. "Legato" is the way in which it's played.

Thx for doing these videos. My Vector and Expander arrives today(!) so I’m finding these very helpful and clear!

Your videos on the Vector makes me want to get into Eurorack 👍🎉 Is it still a great choice for a sequencer, 4 years later?

Vector has seen several firmware improvements over the years, so if you absolutely must have an in-rack sequencer, then I think it should be on your short list. Erica's Black Sequencer has since come out, and while Vector still has more features, Black Sequencer is half the price and supports a similar feature set. If you're okay venturing outside of the rack, there have been quite a few top-shelf hardware sequencers released, such as the Squarp Hapax, and Oxi One.

The O Tool seems to be a very interesting device and you explained well the differences and interactions of the three kinds of 'lenghts' that are separately manipulable (step length, gate and ADSR-enveloppe). Thank you for this very clear explaination. I'm very interested in this vector sequencer as my 'second player' that I can program-generate and during live-performance navigate in a way as a secondary melodic or harmonic-chordic line next to my main melody and chords or arpeggios played alive. Can I switch to other patterns by footpedal(s) also?

It supports switching patterns, but I don't think it allows it through CV yet. Jim has posted some teaser videos showing pattern switching via a Launchpad (MIDI), so it seems this kind of thing is around the corner.

@@wernervannuffel2608 Here's the teaser video I was talking about: instagram.com/p/B7eTVJgB9L4/ Half of the reason why the Vector is amazing is Jim. He has the firmware is under constant improvement and is really great about shipping new features.

Is there a list of all available divisions/multiplications of step length? I'm hoping you can get nonstandard step lengths the er-101 but I can't tell from the manual.

Possible step lengths: 1/8, 1/7, 1/6, 1/5, 1/4, 1/3, 3/8, 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4 I didn't show it in this video (I was planning to show it in an upcoming one), but the per-part Rate + Mode can also be set to all kinds of stuff. There is a PCT mode (percent of beat) which you could setup odd stuff like 41% of the beat. There's also a SPD mode which is basically just a freeform number that isn't tied to any musical division. The part clock division can also be set to any fraction of a beat you can dream up, so weird stuff like 9/5 of a beat or 15/7 or whatever. The step length multiplier/divisor will multiple or divide relative to this per-part Rate + Mode so you can get really wild if you want.

@@ferrycollider Cool. On a related note - do you know if the reset input global or can you activate it per sequence/channel? It would be nice to do "untimed" sequences that could reset every 8 measures while other sequences kept looping in different meters.
@ferrycollider

@@richiehinterland yes that's possible. Page 14 "External Clock Pulse" of the manual covers this, but more or less the Reset port is configured to "Cr" mode, then the reset of each part can be set individually to "EXT" (external). By the way, the per-part reset can also be configured to every n beats as well, which might save the hassle of having to fire an external reset trigger. What's also cool is there are two modulation CV inputs, and the part reset beat count can be controlled externally via a CV, so the reset beat count could be modulated over time too.

Now that we're talking about this, I'm realizing I should make a video about it because there's so many possibilities lol.
