At age 53 I was diagnosed with stage II hypertension, atherosclerosis and high cholesterol. I was not overweight, I had recently retired from the military and always past my PHA and FIT and had continued to workout after retirement. When diagnosed I was told it was hereditary and that I would not only be on medication the rest of my life but was looking stents. As I took my 7 prescription cocktail every morning I could feel the life draining out of my, I felt horrible. Upon a follow up visit with my doctor I asked if there was anything I could do to improve my health and reduce the amount of prescription medication that was causing so many life sucking side effects. My doctor told me that because it was hereditary there was nothing I could do, and in fact I was probably only going to get worse. He told me that because I was already working out and eating according to the American Heart Association a healthy diet, he had no advice to give, I was already doing everything he would have recommended. I went home deflated and depressed, I was at a cross roads and had to make a decision. 1. accept my fate and dump the Rx for a happy last few years and hope the end was a quick and painless one, or 2. find a way to change things and get a second opinion. I started doing some research on line to find a doctor that specialized in reversing heart disease . I was fortunate to find a doctor in my area that specialized in people like me, she was of course out of network so I had to fight with my wife insurance company but finally got my visit approved and I had my records sent over. I saw her for almost an hour and she said she agrees with the diagnosis but not the treatment and told me if I was serious about getting better to immediately go to a whole-food plant-based vegan diet and she gave me a list of books to download or buy. The very next day I went WFPBV, come this November it will be four years of being WHPBV and it will be close to three years that I have been 100% Rx free. I just turned 58, and I just had my lab results come back and I now have the lab results of a 25 year old athlete. I have never felt better, I feel incredible. By the way when I told my old doctor that I was switching doctors and what I was doing he was pissed and told me I would be dead in a few years from CA. WFPB was by far the best and cheapest Rx I have ever been prescribed. I eat no added salt, sugar or oils, I eat nothing processed or refined.

Just looking at him you can tell that he practices what he preaches.. He’s the picture of health. Flawless beautiful skin ,great teeth, articulate. God bless him.🙏🏿
He does look healthy indeed. However we can’t discount that he’s likely had the benefit of a good life with access to comfortable shelter, health and dental care and education since he was a child. Physical and socioeconomic security goes a long way is transforming a person to a higher level of health consciousness. Research shows the more educated the person the more healthy their way of life which includes the diet. Glad this good doctor is helping to educate and heal others.
@@indigowildflowers Good genetics don’t make it alone however. A person must have reasonable food, shelter, clothing, access to medical and dental care to upkeep wear and tear on the body and avoid the effects of neglect. This man by his own story has lived a good life which has supported his genetics and good health. He obviously works hard and is careful to maintain this by eating a very careful diet and not put junk into his body and potentially distort himself by becoming obese. He also wants to avoid having internal fat distort and clog the coronary arteries supplying oxygen to his heart. Or visceral fat invading his liver. This good doctor is enlightened and on his channel advocating the advantages of changing one’s external environment and way of living. This support your body’s genes. We also can not discount the effects of love, spiritual and social support, education and socioeconomics in overall well-being. Lack often will manifest itself in some form of physical malady. Even the classic movie, Trading Places, portrayed how environment and genetics go hand in hand. I think this cardiologist is a great role model.
Great interview. I just switched to a vegan diet after having a heart attack (99% blocked LAD) at 33 years old. Total cholesterol only 146, great blood pressure and a resting heart rate of 48. It can happen to anyone. Also nice to hear him talk about how having a stent isn’t a scarlet letter. One week out from my stent placement now and really needed to hear that. Thank you.
This is part of why we need to make whole foods more available to poorer communities. If they can eat healthier, then can have (hopefully) fewer health issues. No one group of people deserves better/healthier food than another. Processed foods need to be the rarity for people's diets, not the predominant feature.
I dont understand, where i live is South Africa, take aways is always more expensive tjan whole foods,it is way cheaper to buy wfpb than meats and take aways
I agree. I believe the availability is there, but it can be so expensive for many. I would love to eat healthier but sometimes it can be very expensive.
@Irene Ndunge kale is not healthy though, mabe you were talking about steaks, ground beef, tallow, grass fed butter, but things like kale, bananas, fruits and vegetables that grow out of the ground is not really "cheap" that is the correct price for them.
@@starlafaulkner8438 It's cheap if you eat just beef and get fat adapted by limiting carbs, you go a lot longer without eating or feeling the need to, and you get by easily one meal a day, meanwhile many of your health problems including some unexpected ones go away.
Anna LA, that is in control of govt because they can make certain foods not able to be bought with food stamps. Then there need to be community gardens, help poor communities grow healthy food for themselves.
He and Drs Esselstyne, Caldwell, McDougall are heroes and have done so much to educate people. After all, Dr Batiste has said often it’s up to you to do all you can to eat best you can, exercise and do basic things for good health!!

Thank you Dr. Batiste for an insightful interview. I underwent a triple bypass in 2019 at the age of 59. I pray to find a Cardiologist like you. Before my surgery, I was given a good report of my EKG in 2018. Wrong, fast forward August 2019 on the way to church had shortage of breath, chest pain, and burping like no tomorrow. I was admitted into the hospital and my Cardiologist came in the next morning. He was shocked to see me on the heart ❤️ ward. He ran a heart cat test with dye. I was given a mild sedative and was aware of what was going on. They Cardiologist were talking and all of a sudden, they went silent. My heart was trying to repair itself. New vessels had started to grow. The body is an amazing and wonderfully made. The Doctor told my husband that I had major blockage in three arteries. Stents wouldn't do me any good. My Doctor broke the news to me. It didn't surprise me. Heart disease has claimed the lives of my father, brothers, and uncles. I am in the fourth week of going plant based. The only discussion with the FNP that works for my Cardiologist just checks my blood pressure, ask me how I am feeling and that's it. I thought he would be doing blood are something. With God's help I will prevail. God Bless 🙌 You and your family.
I am a vegan and I believe this doctor is making a contribution to our health. The problem this person has is a lot like walk up a steep mountain that is slick with grease into a strong headwind. Our brains are hard wired to love all the unhealthy foods and the big food corporations and fast food has harnessed these addictions for profits. They are the 800 pound gorilla in the room.
No it's hard wired for fruits and vegetables. People override that natural abilities when they eat junk and do drugs. They both affect the part of the brain that's receptive to fruits and vegetables.
Our brains are hardwired to seek healthy foods available in our environment… For 2 million years that meant plentiful amounts of animal meat and fat and small amounts of carbohydrates . Veganism is as unnatural as junk food.
WFPB. I suffered from metabolic syndrome (obesity, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, and high blood sugar). I went whole food plant based no sugar or oil and low salt and I lost 65 pounds, all my conditions greatly improved, my gums stopped bleeding, and erections and energy returned. I used to have an appetite that was never satisfied; whole foods cured it. I no longer use a sleep apnea machine. Finally, the food is cheap-Beans, lentils, sprouted flourless grain bread, rice, potatoes and seasonal apples. Also, I save money by not having to buy pills or visit the Doctor. I am thankful to all the vegans who suffered attacks to reveal the truth to me.
I’m WFPB now for the last 6months. I was “Reduce-atarian” for 12 months prior but just wanted to lock in - put the problems to bed at last. No holds barred.
I love that; 'reduce-atarian'. Great way to transition & a variation on my mantra 'add the virtues and the vices will disappear of their own accord'. Good for you 🇦🇺
From my own personal experience this Dr is well enlightened and 100 % on the money. Great interview. And taking the time at a conference, when his time would have been limited. Thank you very much.
I was MEANT to see this video. My cholesterol is out of control and I’m seeing a cardiologists right now. I have plaque I found out and I’ve just changed my diet. Thank you for this video.
5 years ago I was working as a bicycle courier and one day at work I began having mild chest pains. It wasn't severe but was enough to send me to the doctor. I am 6'3" and weighed 230 lbs but because I had an active job I believed that gave me a pass to eat whatever I wanted. My lab results came in and my cholesterol was off the charts and my blood pressure was approaching cardiac emergency levels. I was told that I needed to make some changes and I wasn't sure what to do. A friend of mine on reddit at the time was vegan and after seeing my post approached me and offered some advice. I started slowly and relapsed several times but it's been 4 years and I eat a strictly vegan diet. I've been medication free for over 2 years and my last EKG was great. They said I have the heart of a high school quarterback. So glad I made this change! Veganism made food and eating food interesting again and all with the added bonus of allowing me the chance to do a 180⁰ with my cardiac and overall health. Cheers veganism!
@@Kayerickawall40 Absolutely. A well balanced plant based food diet has quite literally cured diabetes, and coronary heart disease. In fact it is the only way doctors were able to reverse and cure these illnesses. This was an amazing interview. I definitely know this was CONFIRMATION for my lifestyle change to WFPB nutrition. Thank you and to VEGAN LINKED and Dr. Batiste
This information is so Amazing and I am learning so much. I am so inspired. Thank you for sharing❤ I am working on changing my eating and exercising and changing my lifestyle
This is great to see more cardiologist that are plant based. Mr. Batiste knows so much and for him to raised his children on that diet is excellent they will excell.
Turned Vegan 5 years ago at 55, but did it for the animals…not a plant based diet…I’m Vegan. However, I still have not gotten away from Vegan meats and cheeses, French fries, etc. I have a goal… We retire in about 6 months and are moving to the mountains of southern Mexico. We will be away from fast food places and most process foods. At that point I want to be on Dr Esselstyn’s diet…100%.
Dr. Batiste, you are awesome: you’re intelligent, deeply knowledgeable, well spoken and enthusiastic … and also warm, approachable, realistic and likable. A WFPB rockstar! Great interview. Thank you for spending your valuable time sharing your message. Looking forward to your book!
Been vegan for almost 6 years now,it totally changed my life, best decision I've ever made. I love interviews like this, very encouraging and motivating,as backsliding is always a risk.
I truly appreciate Dr Baptiste's kindness and @ 45:45 practices acceptance rather than being non-judgemental. I'm a reformed eater as my cholesterol levels attest (GP supported my plant-based approach) so know first hand how important it is to gently change.
Probably the best Veganlinked I have watched yet. Great content, great interaction, great emotion. This site has become my favorite diet and nutrition channel on RU-vid.
Wow, thanks! I've been a bit derail the last seven weeks working on the website that I hope will complement this RU-vid channel very nicely. I have like 50 interviews left to edit and publish that I've already shot it's driving me nuts. I'll try to release one today though if I can if not Friday for sure. And then I should be back on track for once every. That website almost killed me though, VeganLinked.com it's not ready for official launch but it's functional at least :)
This interview is fantastic. I feel so motivated and have such clarity now. Thank you 🙏 The Wilson analogy made me tearful. Food is my Wilson and now I need a new friend. Bye Bye Wilson 😊

EXCELLENT!!! Video..Plain and clear.. I understood everything Dr. Batiste explained!! 💯💓🙏👍Will this share this video with those that are open to listen and learn. Thank You Dr. Columbus D. Batiste !! I will buy your book!!!
I’m 61. Been vegan for 6 years. Take no medications and have perfect blood work. Spent 17 years as a caregiver to elderly parents and my grandmother. My parents lived to age 80 and my grandmother lived to age 82. All of them ate the Standard American Diet. None were overweight. None drank alcohol. Only my father smoked and he only smoked one cigarette after dinner. All of them started on blood pressure medications from about age 40 onward. They suffered from high blood pressure and various forms of heart disease. My father had bypass surgery on a vein in his leg in his 60s and suffered three major strokes in his 70s. My mother had open heart surgery for a valve replacement. My grandmother suffered TIAs. After observing what happened to my family, I changed to a vegetarian diet then went fully vegan. I now try to eat mainly raw vegan during the summer months and eat cooked vegan foods during colder months. Since eating animal products leads to arteriosclerosis as a cumulative effect, I only wish I had known all this information when I was younger. Since college days, I had reduced eating meat but still ate dairy foods without restrictions. Just happy that people are realizing the need to avoid animal products altogether. I’m also happy to see doctors like this gentlemen speaking up and recommending a vegan diet rather than sitting back and making money off of people who insist on consuming animal products. I learned a lot during my vegan journey from Dr. Joel Fuhrman. My best friend’s husband co-wrote Dr, Fuhrman’s book “Fast Food Genocide.” I also follow Drs. Esselstyn, Greger, and McDougall. Recently, I read that hospitals in Israel are going to start serving patients only vegan foods while they are hospitalized there. The doctors for my parents and grandmother NEVER told them to stop or even cut back on animal products. All they were told was to eat a banana every day and reduce salt intake. Thank you so much Dr. Batiste.
I do agree with all your observations. I also started late, and wish I knew about WFPB in my 20s. Unlike you, I still need to take meds due to preexisting arteriosclerosis, but numbers are all super low with diet and meds. So far, my doctors want me to do both.
@@DianaHylandTX I’m so glad for you that you did come to the knowledge of WFPB diets and made the change. Every time I go on social media to comment on the changes I made and what happened to my parents, etc. I get extreme pushback from meat-eaters who don’t want the truth. Of course, I can tell by the way they talk that they are younger and have not yet experienced the cumulative effects of eating animal products over many years. They also don’t understand what is happening to parents or grandparents that may be having medical procedures or illnesses and taking medications for illnesses due to arteriosclerosis. The younger people attribute those health problems to old age. These younger people base everything on how they feel presently and, of course, their tastebuds. But I never really hear all that bravado from older people because many older people are suffering from arteriosclerosis and related illnesses. The younger proponents of eating meat comment on how frail vegans look, etc. but they never comment on older people in the hospitals and nursing homes with heart attacks, strokes, kidney failed from medications, arthritis, etc. from eating meat. Neither do they comment of the riches that the medical profession is making off these unfortunate people. I’m just so glad for you. Perhaps soon you will be able to get off all medication. Best wishes. ❤️
Dr. Fuhrman is fearless at throwing the truth out. He was the first WPBF doc I found. I wince at the procedures your parents and Gma had to undergo, and pay for.
Awesome discussion! I think the data is overwhelming that if you want to keep your health from 40+, but definitely 80+, then whole food vegan diet is the lifestyle. If not convinced, then see: Centenarian Secrets on Longevity, Breaking World Records & Thriving Past 100 | Rich Roll Podcast. The benefit is whole food plant based is: Nutrient dense, lower calorie, support microbiome, doesn't harm the body as much as processed/animal based, and supports better health. What an amazing combo! Example: leafy greens, that are high in organic nitrates like augula & kale are super important for producing Nitric Oxide which protects the blood vessels or endothelium. Nitric Oxide is the Teflon for blood vessels, and veggies don't inflame blood vessels like sugar, oil, salt, meat, and dairy. It's so good that those that follow a high nutrient WHOLE FOOD VEGAN DIET, in studies, are REVERSING their ATHEROSCLEROSIS. I was told by my doctor that you can't reverse atherosclerosis... They don't have a pill for that... perhaps the doctors need to be informed...
This is encouragement. I am 55 yr old woman in relatively great health ( we exercise and lift a little weights) but my 58 yr old hubby eats what I eat but bc of genetics finds it harder to keep his BP and cholesterol numbers right. So I am looking at us to stop eating meats (we already don't eat pork) and try your lifestyle Doc since you look and feel awesome and this seem to be the sentiment of others who eat plant base whole foods too... Thank you again for your passion and gift to us. I am aware that honesty make the business you are in less profitable
Awesome! Good for you guys. Don't be fooled into thinking that life without meat or animal products is plain. Lots of awesome delicious and healthy meals you can prep at home. I wish you and your husband well!
5 years on the Esselstyn diet post heart attack. Doing great. Chose diet over stents. (It was not an emergency situation where stents have proven benefit.) Angina has reversed. Feel like I felt decades ago. If I can do it so can you.
Read Dr Michael Greger's book How Not to Die and just eat fresh fruits and veggies and nuts and seeds and berries and melons and you won't need a doctor.
You are so right when someone is seeking out a way to better health or optimal health a part of the journey to try new eating options. That’s the best way to see what works but it takes patience. As for me I also tried keto years ago and I had to realize that that was just way too much fat although Good Fat. It is just bad. So now I am WFPB. One year 4 months.
What an illuminating interview! Love Dr. Batiste's straightforward, but nonjudgemental style of sharing his expertise. Makes me want to get my heart checked out!

I had a great cardiologist who approved of my diet. Said he wished he could be a vegetarian like he was in his youth. He had me scheduled for a stent procedure after a heat event but they could not find any blockage to stent. Turns out that I was born with a congenital condition(PFO). I can't imagine what my heart would have looked like if I hadn't given up meat years before.
@@kitty1256x If I lived in my own place and did all my own cooking I would be vegan. Unfortunately I don't so I'm only vegetarian. My assisted living situation doesn't provide vegan choices and few vegetarian ones. My son does makes me vegan meals like Indian dals but not enough. You should really find out what conditions a person is forced to live with before you pass judgement dearie. This older woman does the best she can.
This interview was excellent. He is very knowledgeable. One of my long time questions I always had he answered. The people from way back then did they have head disease and things. Yes they did, wow
Not many eating guacamole by itself or on a spoon. I like how he references his father as a baseline. We as people are sight oriented. Love how he speaks on his family in a positive light. Nice flow to the interview and questioning. Change for me: getting my BP checked at the dentist office.
what a perfectly lovely man..........and gorgeous to look at too! I'm 77 and well. People ask me why do I look in my early 60's and am healthy. My answer: 40 years a vegan - one who does not eat junk food. Don't eat animals, don't steal baby calves, kids, lambs mother's milk. Eat plants and stay healthy. Good for you, the animals and the environment.
I like his name the best! So cool! He's trying to drive away his customers through prevention with a healthy diet, and so honors the duty of a medical professional. In America, there will always be heart patients, sadly.
Wow, your really upped your game with this interview. Amazing. Regarding studies related to saturated fat and coconut, actually I read at least one study in the asian countries where they have abundant coconuts. The answer is yes, too much coconut saturated fat is bad (talking about whole coconut, not just oil. But would be interesting to compare cooked coconut to raw because those asians cook their coconut in their curries). And vegans learned a long time ago that too much coconut can raise one's cholesterol level. I don't think a person would need to worry about raw coconut, because I think an experiment was done on animals with raw coconut and it just made them lean.
Lol, not sure how I stepped up my game but thanks. Dr Klaper's interview is pretty amazing too, I released that on 1/1/22 if you haven't seen it yet. Some interviews are easier based on location, timing, etc and I love talking nutrition, health, etc with professionals in the know. I have many more with docs like this to come. They'll be interspersed between stories of every day vegans. Next week will be a bunch of restaurateurs and eventually progressively more doctos, long term and lifelong vegans ❤ I wanted to get the more new vegans and the more vegan forward ones out of the way first...
@@VeganLinked I have to rewatch the Klaper video. But he has done so many talks for years, while this guy is new on the scene. Love that you raised the omega 3 issue to a cardiologist. Not sure if you know that there is a spat between Jeff Nelson, Dr. Klaper and Joel Fuhrman over DHA-omega 3. So really nice to talk to a neutral 3rd party (Dr. Batiste), especially one whose wife is a pescatarian. People just want the truth. Some people question Fuhrman's motives because he sells supplements. But Fuhrman has taken care of many aging vegans for decades so he has unique insight. and it's belittling to attack his supplement line, when all doctors prescribe medication. One person who would be very interesting to interview is Rick Dina, DC, who has spent decades reviewing vegans' omega 3 profiles. He tries to promote the cleanest sources.
@@gardenbliss6638 yes, I am profoundly deep in the fatty acid drama. I can't stand Jeff Nelson. When I first encountered him he asked to use my video of Dr Tim Radak talking on fatty acids. He turned around and used to to throw my favorite doctors under the bus. Then I flew out to Dr Fuhrman and stayed a few nights with him to get in his head about this and do a video repsonse to Nelson. I actually dove deep with Klaper on fatty acids and about an hour after I left from doing the interview he contacted me asking me to remove that segment because he wasn't absolute yet and was supposedly in talks with Fuhrman about this. I have other doctors coming talking about this. Stay tuned ;)
