by Gilbert Loreaux and Mukul Mangalik. The film captures the last run of a steam hauled service on the Ahmedabad - Udaipur section. A must watch for any steam lover.
My cousin Mervin Lazarus joined railways 16 yrs of age . Looking at this vdo i remember he had put hard work to become loco foreman at Daund. May he soul rest in peace. Hard work done on face of the earth on india railway. South Central.
Ours is a lucky generation having travelled in bullock cart, Tonga, man-powered rickshaw, auto rickshaw, car, steam/diesel/electric loco driven train, propeller/jet engine planes, HS-28 to A380.
What an awesome Engine Driver he is. Loves his Engine like a Father loves and understands his child. Respects his fireman too! Now that is what a Noble person does. Few like him nowadays. God bless you Driver Saab!!
21 gun salute to this and those unsung heroes who have made what indian railways is today....dedicacton...hardwork....and above all the LOVE towards their work.....indian railways.....the lifeline of the nation...
My grandfather was European Grade A driver. He use to Take the train from Lahore to Saharanpur UP. He retired in late 1960’s After retirement they settled in Jagadhari Haryana. Our paternal family they were all working in Northern Railway. He passed away in 1972 . I am proud of him.
My father uncles and cousins all served on the Southern Railway as drivers firemen and guards and this video brought tears to my eyes reliving what they all went through My hats off to the driver Mr Rathod and the first and second fireman I imagined my father on the footplate and my uncles and cousins as firemen and guards Indian Railway employees you are the best in the world and Indian Railways no one can compare with you Thank you for the beautiful video and the beautiful landscape of our great country
Kash mai Driver hota railme, I prayed to god next born should be as railway driver means pilot on rail, Thanks to all and shri Rathodji send her mobile no. Please.
The charm of the Black, power of coal, thrust by iron will........the nostalgia of the chug........ these steam engines made our childhood so colourful.......... Alas,it has all vanished like a dream, that was true once upon a time.l have been lucky to witness all that.🚧🧜♂
I was on this train in 1994. This journey across the Aravali brings out the poet in you. NO wonder The loco driver Mr Rathod says although Iam a driver, all my life I have been a traveller. There are a few things which technology cannot replace, like this one , the pristine journey of an era long vanished. The video gave great joy especially because of my father who was, like the driver a 'proud' railway man.
Fills my eyes with tears when I see these icons of the past.... how lovely these were , the most obedient queens to these magnificent men on the footplate
Here is a man who loves what he does. Its very important. In your life you must do what you love. i did recall my childhood journey on meter gauge railway from Pune to Miraj and then from Miraj to Londha and then to Madgaon Goa. It was a real pleasure to travel during heavy monsoon to Goa via Londha, Castle-rock, Colem to Sanvordem. It was impossible to miss the glory of Doodhsagar, the grand waterfall on the border of Karnataka and Goa. This clip made me remember my old golden days. Thanks. The driver of this train must have enjoyed his life to fullest because he loved what he did. One of the most fortunate men. Hats off to him.
My father was a steam engine driver in S.E.Rly, I remember his works, having watched him on duty.Truely it requires real guts to run the behemoth I salute this driver sahab & wish him very best, many thanks for this presentation.
Mr. Raman Lal Rathod is admirable in every way. Unfortunately I do not have the chance to know him. His death in January 2013 makes me sad. A big thank you for giving us his name.
What humanity, what wisdom, what life, a face that is not forgotten. A face illuminated by a broad smile at this locomotive engineer. I do not get tired of watching this wonderful video for years for the locomotive but even more for his locomotive engineer.
I felt very emotional, I might have born in that steam era, missed those coal fired steam locomotives a lot. Thanks a lot for taking us back in to steam days 😍👌🏼
All the drivers take pride in their machines. I am a driver too (not trains), I can understand. I love the steam locomotive and its always a pleasure to see these men of steel hauling metal with pride!!!! Awesome!! I wish India preserved these machines and ran them for the new generation to enjoy. O I wish!!!!
Thank you so much for posting this. As a steam aficionado, this documentary has immense nostalgic value for me. The men who drove these beauties took pride in their machines, their jobs, their responsibilities , their accomplishments unlike the diesel and electric crews these days. The end of steam saw the end of a glorious era for the Indian railways.
Wonderful video, she is a masterpiece. I look at it very often. What human qualities and wisdom in this remarkable man who drives this steam locomotive. He respects her as a person. What life in this train. We are not outside the scene; we live it intensely in the cab of the locomotive engine as in passenger cars. We are here for the party for his last trip. These machines should not be forgotten like the men who took care of them. Thank you all.
I'm so touched seeing the dedication of the driver.I salute.Felt very emotional and was almost in tears.Feeling very proud as I am also a retired employee from South Central Railway
I thank to all the drivers , firemans who had served the Indian Railways on the era of steam engines for which the Indian Railway had moved forward for a better destination, I salute to them & personally I feel proud than I have a better chance to serve the Railways from Ratlam Division of Western Railway & still I am working at coaching depot Santragachi of S.E.Railway
laughing man rathord ji salute to you for serving indian railways. hats off toyou for such a dedicated hard job. also thanks to your coal man and fireman.all the best.

Respected Chacha ji, where are you located? I'd love to sit besides you and listen to you. I'm from Chandigarh. And of course, just as you must be thinking and so am I, Tyagis being small in numbers are always a tribe in themselves. Kahin na kahin se rishta (khoon waala, dil waala toh pehle hi ban gya) bhi nikal aayega. Warm Regards, Chacha ji.
After watching this video I felt emotional and I wish I was born in that era when steam engines ruled the Indian railways. I always wanted to be a loco pilot. 😞 Loco pilot Sir Ramlal Yadav was the most humble and down to earth human being and had a great sense of humor. Hats off to his driving skill. Hats off to those fireman
My grandfather was a steam driver hauling freight trains between Lucknow and Mughal Sarai. His stories abt his journey were just mesmerising. I remember how he used to make tea, rice dal and chapaties near the firebox and also mutton that he made without the use of a pressure cooker. I wud love steam engines to be back on the Indian trarcks.
N.k.sarkar.rha.. .I was. A rly Man now. Read Tears came. Out seeing this train the. Engine the driver St n. Passengers. Beautiful journey. I am now spellbound.cant.write more.
Very very emotional video of a train engine and a driver. Some people were / are working in railway by thinking that it is their own with utmost love and courtesy. My salute to all these railway employees.
Train journeys are always wonderful and memorable..I have lots of these memories which when I see this RU-vid video reminds me of the good old days with less crowded
That was not the last journey of the engine and its fortunate pilot Mr. Raman, but that was end of a glorious era. I mentioned Mr Raman as fortunate because he worked with steam engines since 15 years, one of the favorites of rail lovers. He kept on giving life to his engine everytime and the same was done to him by his engine too. I loved the way Mr Raman enjoyed dancing on chugging notes of the steam loco. This shows how much he loved his work every bit of every day. I always dreamt of driving a loco though I was unfortunate for not getting into such a position. However, by this inevitable film and through the moves of Mr Raman, I have lived my dream today. A very very thanks to the makers behind this documentary.
Wah. I recall our early days. We experienced this rail journey from my native place located just nearby our Railway Station namely Kaithalkuchi Railway Stationin Nalbari district of Assam. Thank you. I also recall the Drivers who felt so heat. Salute to them.
I know this meter gauge section well, going back to the early '50s. From Ahmedabad , Mt Abu, Mehsana Jn left to Jodhpur etc: Udaipur & Rajkot. Ajmer was a big division, it had the oldest Loco Workshop and boasted of manufacturing India's first Locomotive in 1926 or thereabouts. The meter gauge line went on to Old Delhi Station. It is true that engine drivers were a special breed and took immense pride in the cleanliness of their engines and would deck it it out with with lights and shiny brass fittings and other gimmicks; even their crew, the fireman and oilers and cleaners were inspected for their turnout. The senior A- Grade Mail engine drivers were a haughty lot. Mostly anglo indians, parsis, musalmaans from certain parts of the country and selected upper crust hindus. They were like family. It was an unforgettable and glorious era.
My Grandfather Francis Pharao and my late husband Reginald D'Cunha drove these beauties. I loved our Railway life. My Dad Peter Mathias retired as Boiler Foreman in Bhusawal
I’m connected with engine sound and railway since my birth as my house is near railway station. This film is better than many bollywood movie for me and made me nostalgic. Love for steam engines trains was more than today’s Bande Bharat!! Also loved the way Driver Sir enjoy his profession. Respect
Indian steam Engine Drivers is KING of Indian Railway having Royal Life n Responsibilities in all weather for train n passengers Love you Masters 🔥🌡️☀️🌦️⛈️☄️🌠🙏🙏🙏👍👍🧡♥️💝
In my childhood, i used to watch the steam locomotive haul train. My house was close to the railway station in a village. The drivers always talked to me in a sweet way as I was only a small child. There was a rhytham to the locomotive. A majestic look also. Today, I can see electic locomotive flies with tremendous speed. A nostalgic feeling of my very childhood memories. Everything changed. Life became so fast. Never returning old days....tears well up in my tears.....
Absolutely nostalgic . Entire childhood flashed across . Can't stop tears running .Hats off to all those steam engine staff . Superb video deserves more than YT platform.
The end of an era, sad and emotional. There is NOTHING like steam locomotives and the people who work them, from the call boy to the driver. Ive not been to India but i can tell you one thing for sure, all enginemen all over the world are part of the same family i can clearly see this. Ive never seen a driver not offer a fellow engineman a ride (or even a swing on the bango or regulator) on the footplate wherever possible, its a common bond no matter where you hail from.I see other comments by locals lamenting failure to preserve these engines, its sad but please don't blame yourselves, sometimes these things cant be done. Ive run steam locomotives on multiple now dead railways,i just try to remember what was rather than lament the fact that they no longer operate.I don't think there was much if anything i (or anybody else)could have done at the time. All the best to you all,may you fire be hot, your water high and the safety valve feathering.Bless you all.
salute to the drivers. OMG wat a tough job. Current era drivers have the luxury of sitting and watching the route thro toughened glasses but these guys need to peep out all d time...imagine the same on a moonless night...it wud be the challenging task of their journey...God bless them.
My maternal grandfather was use to be prominent loco pilot who gave his service both in steam engine and diesel engine and also my uncle's gave service in diesel and electric engines . I got very emotional watching this video. My grandfather always use to say how tough back then to work in steam engines especially he started from fireman and retired as no 1 locopilot with zero remarks from south eastern railway back than Bengal Nagpur railway it used to be. I am proud him . May his soul rest in peace
Salute to mr rathor As my grandfather was also loco pilot My childhood was full of these stories Wo kisse dada ji ki yaad ate hai Is video me mujhe apne dadaji ka daur dikha thank you so much ❤️
main10 Saal ka tha,jab pehli baar 1968 mein Nangal se ambala aur fir ambala se tinsukia ka safar kiya tha, aaj iss train ka vidio dekhkar bachpan yaad aa gayaa
Salutations to the steam heritage for concluding an era with IR. A tribute to all steam loco pilots and all the memories will always be afresh in our hearts.
Harjaap singh khaira, lucknow wonderful video. I have great respect for Rathore ji. I pay homage to him ,who was a jolly fellow having good knowledge of his profession. Thanks for video.
I watched this video in July 2020 during lockdown period. I think it is not a good video at all......... it is too very very good and a nostalgic video much much better than a Bollywood blockbuster. It portrays sincerity of a person towards his work, humbleness, true dedication towards his work not only for livelihood but for his undaunted love to serve humanity. it is very touching to see his life. Ramanlal Rathod the engine driver's life should be a learning lesson for today's youth. Not all can afford high education or have aptitude for becoming doctor , scientist, engineer etc., this video of Ramanlal Rathod teaches us how to love the work we do and not regret for not becoming engineers doctors etc. Driver Ramanlal has shown his responsibility for transporting thousands of passengers safely through his 30 years of service in all seasons of the years, bearing the worst working conditions, that too with a smile and even dance at times and has no regrets. He even spends money from his own pocket to keep his official equipment look extremely charming. This is sheer dedication and love for work.
I am fortunate that In my childhood, I travelled a lot on the steam engine trains. I used to go and watch passing by trains in my free time by waitng for them sitting besides a lake under a banyan tree. ☺️☺️
Dear Pratik Rathod. It is really fantastic . Just now, by accidentally, I saw this video. Truly amazing. Your Grandpa Mr Ramanlal would've been a very very nice human being. During the journey, he used to acknowledge the wishes of those poor people , young ones with goats in fields & adhiwasi girls with firewoods. It is touching everyone's hearts. He would have loved his very very tough job of steam engine driver from body language itself one can understand & acknowledge. During his last journey of his driving career, he was so sad when we look at his face which is understandable by everyone. Since, every one in his career , should face his last day in whatever post he occupies. Really an epic journey which was filmed so nice & so it's presentation. Hats off & thanks for filming & bringing such an epic journey & unforgettable memories of Legend like Mr Raman lal.. D Selvaraj Coimbatore
Salutes to the makers of the video. For today's youth, this is a window into the past, a reminiscence of the beauty and calm of a rural life of a bygone era we have never seen ourselves. The steam engine has a charisma that no electric or diesel engine can boast of. It's a vehicle of magic, veiled in majestic cloud of white, chugging along, pulling up the fire of passions.
a big salute to rathod ji, i remember steam engines in indian railway at broad gauge and metre guage, in metre guage steam engine trains we often travel to palani, a temple town in tamilnad, from palakkad railway junction in 1980 ees, i feel the coal smell , what a rhythemic sound, isn't it, once again a big salute to rathod sab from my heart, my father was a railway engineer, jayakumar shoranur keralam
I am 1989 born.. this was the time when most of the steam locomotives pulled out from the main line... I just have a faded memory of whistling sound team loco. But never got a chance to see them working... 😔. Sometimes I felt like Indian railways just killed them. Still Indian railway is capable to run steem locos on main line
One of the best documentary on our time old steam engine and its drivers and their passion. They are the real heroes of our Indian railway. We all Indians are proud off.
Such a authentic video just like a master peace.. Made me completely emotional and took me back in those days were ppl had little but loved every minute of their life such a simplicity of this engine driver and his love for his job... Seriously those days and ppl were really special.
Hello Pratik, Glad to know that you are an acquaintance of Mr. Raman Lal Rathore. Convey our warm regards and appreciation to him and thank him for his selfless service to the Indian Railways. I hope to meet him in person some day.
