Yes, like I remember Venice Beach used to be a really cool place back then. I was 16 years old in 1969 growing up in California. I would not change it for the world.

I was 11 at this point, wound up living in the Jim Morrison Motel at 14 Westminster in the 80's. Found myself outdoors in 85, went to Oregon in 86, built a modest career, got myself a home, and lived happy ever since. I would never go back, it's just not the same. I do miss the sea, the fog at night, and the breeze off the water, but here I have trees, deer in my yard and no cops up my hindquarters for no particular reason. The homeless and the gen Z types can have the place, my Native California doesn't exist anymore.

its pretty much the same except instead of hippies and bikers, its gentrifiers and homeless skaters who used to live there before you had to be a millionaire. must have been cool to pay low rent and have neighbors like denis hopper.

Great to see this this historical footage of Venice on RU-vid! Thank you Roger Rave. Thank you Bill Alsup and Patrick Jordan for shooting the film. Doc comes in at 1:24. He was 100 years old and used to do his daily exercises on the beach in front of his place at Sunset and Ocean Front Walk. My sister Philomene Long, the late Poet Laureate of Venice, and her son Patrick come in walking from the beach at 8:26. What a gift you have given us. Anyone else recognize anyone?

Thoise were the best time's growing up in Venice, it's not the same anymore I visit 1 or 2 times a week and usually hang out on the pier listening to 60s music bring back memories. We'd spend a lot of time fishing on the pier I still see my old friends I fished with since we were teenagers. People from Venice have a strong bond that's called . VENICE PRIDE

i was only 3 when this was filmed but i well remember when venice still mostly looked like this. and these days when i watch this old footage i never get over how thin everybody was back then! my dad also had an 8mm camera and filmed constantly throughout my childhood which he eventually tansfered over to vhs. for various reasons that footage is now gone forever and there are no words to describe how much i wish i still had it.

I grew up there, my grandma had a big old Victorian facing the ocean, right on the tramway, at Ozone/Breezeway. Spent every weekend as a teen at POP, bout 1 mile north of us. I was 21 in 71, my daughter 3 years old then and she played at the playground by Muscle Beach. Yep, then I moved to Humboldt and never looked back.

Wow, what a blast to the past! I grew up on the Venice canals between 1968 through 1976, went to Anchorage Elementary. Fond memories, from the Pavilion, Washington Square, the Flea Market, POP, before and after the fires. It was hippies and hessians. Thanks for sharing the video!

Thanks so much for sharing! This was the Venice I grew up in - definitely funky! Unfortunately, it's now a yuppie playground, but all things must change. You've captured all the unique Venice character of the 70s and it's so cool to see the haunting image of P.O.P. lurking in the background - another lost, forgotten piece of our history.

Love this. So good that this was caught on film. Love the music too. I'm wondering who,is singing the Stones and Sex Pistols songs. My first born son was born in Venice in old motel on the Boardwalk, right across from the outdoor cafe but in 1978 so not quite at same time as the film. But there was still a lot of magic there until the yuppies came. Thank you.

a little later then 71 we had a club named the Tarus Tavern on the street that eventually became A bottle Kinney. Sam Taylor which got famous before and after was a regular with " A Band Called Sam" . The true fun were the weekly appearances if Slavin' David who billed himself as the guy who ate the book ( as opposed to wrote it). People would buy pitchers of beer and pour them over each other's heads while Slavin in drunken tantrum would jump so high his oft3n hit the ceiling above the stage. The Tarus in 71 was a girl bar where fights broke in the style of 1900s boxers. Where did they learn that? I played there when a man dared to buy a drink. This guy pointed a gun on me so I changed the song to Shotgun and he quieted down. After the set my band mates dragged him outside 4 a can of whoop ass. For funky junk guitar visit Dirty DOM Music. Press the encircled D.

I'm not 100% on this observation but at 8.39 in this video I think l see a person who could possibly be Jim Morrison walking with friends. In the group of four people walking the second person from the left walks like him and it looks like the clothing he was photographed in before leaving for Paris, March, 1971. This guy certainly walks and flicks his hair back just like Jim did. From what i can make it the face features definitely look the same. Does anybody agree with me or is this just some random guy out for a walk. I'm a big Doors fan and traveled from Ireland to California twenty years ago to visit most of the doors locations and Venice was one of them. This film needs to be up scaled to 4k and that could help figure this one out. Please reply and tell me what you think. Am l pissing against the wind. This could be the last time Jim was filmed in America. Let us know.

Thought maybe that weird raga version of "Jumping Jack Flash" (original version 1968) might actually have been performed live on that day in 1971 by that band shown in the footage. Then I heard the Sex Pistol's "Pretty Vacant" (original version 1977). Some undated recording inserted over silent footage, I guess, which is a bit disappointing. Would've been pretty cool.
