In those days, when money was not so easy to come by, appalam vathha kuzhambu was a typical "maasa kadasi" dish. Paruppu stock ille, vegetables very little at home...that kind of stage. Like you mentioned, my paati did not add onion, tomato to this dish. Garlic was never used at home. So it was a plain appalam vathha kuzhambu. Devamrutham only! 😋

I have to try this item once after delivery sir.. now am 9 months pregnant with ulcer so avoiding tamarind based foods as of now. Mesmerising..normally we do appla kuzhambu without onion and garlic in our home..it is a different one..very nice...usually we cook sambar and vetha kuzhambu in Makalchatti occasionally..White kurma cooked today came out excellent ji..Thank u
Sir wonderful description, as you said we use only appalam and we also add seasame + fenugreek powder, we cut the appalam with scissors and Fry them in that gingley oil itself, edhuvum vegtetables illadha podhu appalam pottu kuzhambu vachu appalathiye thottundu sappiduvom, indha sadham en kuzhandhaigal schoolkku , collegekku eduthundu ponadhal oru rasigar kootame kidachu enakku

Yeah my mother used to make this kuzhambo during rainy season when it is hard to go out to buy vegetables. I tasted this recipe first in 1976 during heavy cyclonic storm time. As you said I follow my mother's recipe and don't add garlic onion and tomatoes. Even at her 80 years my mom makes this kuzhambu

I still remember my great grand mother doing this Applam Kuzambu. But in her recipe, she does not fry the applams but use it as it is. We used to make applams at home and as usual no sign of onion and garlic. But it is always devamrutham in taste.
