Proud to be a born & bred American citizen insofar as the history & traditions of the United States. I am not proud of the current administration insofar as its policies, both foreign & domestic. So call me a right of center patriot unlike the leftist America haters.

My outlook is influenced by the French Annales school and I’m in their debt. We can’t look at history and human life as a series of discrete and disconnected events with no discernible overall pattern. The traditional approach leaves us bogged down in historical minutiae and the local effects that mark the flow of a certain age. We’re liable to miss the forest for the trees. World history comprises the longue duree, the infinite duration of vast cycles of time and movements that transcend a single, finite human lifetime. When we can stand back and look at the larger picture, can we begin to understand what we’re missing. It can take us longer than we think to fill it in and to appreciate its true significance.

Marxism also left valuable insights on my thinking. The critical method of criticising reality, looking at what actually is beneath the appearance of human life, made me want not to take things for granted. I also found the plight of man, of human alienation from our authentic human nature, to make me realise human happiness is a necessary condition in our being whole, sufficient and integrated human beings. None of this means Marxism is the answer to our problems. As a conservative i reject it, while finding its method and understanding of how men feel lost in the world, indispensable to understanding them.

Julie, I like your diagrams, but I would suggest a small change: I would get rid of the title "middle." It seems to suggest that there are three groups, rather than two groups with an overlap. Alternatively, you could replace "middle" with "shared." Also, I would point out that while regular people (the citizenry) on the left or right will tend to favor the values you identify with each group, I don't think that that most regular people would espouse being in favor of out of control spending (although many people are overly reliant on government handouts--and by that I don't mean social security or medicare, which people have specifically paid into). Out of control spending seems to be more particularly a habit (not necessarily a VALUE) of people who work in the executive and legislative branches of the federal government.

Opposition to Communism dominated the Cold War era from 1945-1991. Unipolar Hegemony, centred around liberal values, market economy and a one world outlook, led by the US and the West, shaped the world from 1991 to the Ukraine conflict in 2022. Our current world order, now coming into being, can be named Multipolarity, with a number of competing power centres that may roughly be called world state civilisations, each one distinctive and unique that are based on family, faith, custom and national identity. The Western. Orthodox, Jewish, Islamic, Hindu, Confucian and African civiliisational world states embody them. We are going to live in one of them in the future.
