Verizon pUDP Alert: Unlimited Jetpack $65/Mo Plan Cancellations for Excessive Domestic Roaming

Last May Verizon retired their sweet prepaid unlimited Jetpack plan, which we refer to as the pUDP, for $65/month. This plan offered truly unlimited data for mobile hotspot devices, subject only to network management.
Even though the plan was retired, customers who keep paying the monthly bill have thus far been grandfathered and can keep the plan.
However, we've begun to get isolated reports that Verizon is canceling these plans for some customers due to excessive domestic roaming use - "significant amount of usage outside the Verizon network."

Thank you for letting us know. I use Verizon at my home in a very rural area. About the end of November it became unusably slow. Like dial-up. As the Technomads indicated in one of their recent videos this is probably because of the snowbirds filling up the RV parks here in southern New Mexico. But even the Verizon store people a half hour away have been complaining about their towers not being up to task for the last several years. I have complained many times. They, so far, will not upgrade their towers or equipment. Some of my neighbors have gone to HughesNet recently out of desperation. It's hard to believe Verizon would rather lose customers than pay for additional equipment to handle the load. Maybe the competition is just too fierce. Will be interesting to see what happens when the up-and-coming satellite companies start service.

Had Nextel which was bought out by sprint. After years of sprint, started traveling to rural Georgia in 2011. After a couple of years, sprint started slowing my service down or stopping the roaming when in Georgia and could only roam. That’s when we changed to Verizon phones. I had an old pcmcia card from the mid 2000s that was unlimited from Verizon. Had it over 10 years until they said it would no longer be supported because it was 3g. But now have the prepaid jet pack and haven’t had any issues.

Yep, they canceled my unlimited plan for excessive roaming 10/10/2019. Internet just stopped working one day. No email notice. Didn't even give me the full month I prepaid for, and it was hell to get a hold of anyone that could help. Just got bounced around a phone tree and disconnected multiple times. Eventually got the bad news via their support team on facebook messenger. 🤮

I'm confused. Why doesn't Verizon just stop domestic roaming for prepaid users of the $65 jetpack plan? Most prepaid plans don't include any domestic roaming. Also, I don't see any mention of the $65 jetpack plan; this isn't for regular prepaid handset plans?

I lost my jetpack last year, and the Verizon store had no clue how to reactivate my plan grandfathered plan. If your sim dies, or you lose the jetpack... you have to call Verizon and tell them to reactivate using a new sim card.

Sounds like all the carriers are trying to discontinue unlimited plans or put a lot of restrictions or cost on them. This is something that the price should actually be coming down and it is doing just the opposite. Hopefully we can hold on until satellite internet becomes viable.

my grandparents decided that this would be a terrific investment, and fully got rid of their regular wifi. my grandpa is almost never home bc hes always traveling. with coronavirus going around, my brother and i are living with them so that we dont catch it from our mom or dad (they go out a lot). we have online school and we have to use their jetpack in order to do anything on our computers, and when they go over the limit for the hotspot, it throttles the speed. this is very disturbing, especially if it happens because of my grandpa constantly bringing his hotspot everywhere, because then my brother and i wont be able to do our work or anything. verizon needs to stop trying to screw its customers over, otherwise they wont have any.

How is this not illegal? We buy these to move from place to place. It would seem a class action would scare them or the threat of one. Grandfathered means grand fathered. They have always honored this through the years even if it cost them money. I just can't see how this is legal. Maybe we could flood corp. with emails and bad publicity?

T-Mobile doesn't have an unlimited hotspot plan to switch to... and nor is their coverage always the best for RVers.
@jimseyuin9746
@jimseyuin9746 4 года назад
@@MobileInternetResourceCenter Right. To my knowledge, none of the carriers offer a truly unlimited data only plan anymore. I have a rural cabin and I've tried all LTE service providers for internet.(except for Sprint which has no service coverage.) Verizon and At&t both have a problem on their way with the new merger. T-Mobile is cheaper and many people will be switching for that reason. T-Mobile has a better marketing plan and has bee growing anyway. The two larger providers are going to have to lower prices and offer what people are looking for, or lose the market. It's all a game in the end. I love your channel, It is what helped me to get started with my search for a better internet connection The previous is only an opinion, good luck!

StarLink can't come soon enough. The existing wireless carriers are all going to become irrelevant for mobile and wireless rural internet. Their only market will be phone and tablet users which require a tiny internal antenna. StarLink (and other potential rivals such as OneWeb) use thin flat-panel phased array antennas that lie flat and point straight up. There are no "dishes" like with satellite TV and current satellite internet services such as Hughesnet and ViaSat. Dishes are for geostationary satellites that orbit 22,000 miles up and are locked into a fixed position on the sky. Low orbit satellites such as StarLink move across the sky constantly - the ground antennas must track the satellites constantly 24/7/365. This is not done with dishes. DIshes must be moved mechanically which can not be done continuously for days, weeks, months, and years on end. Instead, they use phased array antennas which are steered electronically with no moving parts. In their simplest form this is perfect for mobile applications where the antenna relatively motionless. With the addition of gyros and accelerometers in the antenna, they can be accurately track satellites from a moving vehicle because electronic beam steering can be done *very* quickly. A revolution in mobile and rural internet access is coming - and it can't get here soon enough.

I was reading an article in Fierce Wireless a year or so ago, reporting on a speech being given at a wireless providers convention, I think it was the president of Verizon, talking about what providers charge each others for data. He talked about the charge being .25 per gigabyte. Yes, twenty five cents per gig is what there charging each other when roaming. Canceling these plans is pure greed, nothing more.

We've heard numbers that are as high as a couple hundred dollars a GB for some roaming partnerships.

Verizon created an unlimited plan and entered into a contract with its users based on the unlimited plan that Verizon created but now Verizon wants to cancel the plan because those users used too much "unlimited" service. It is games like this that lead me to leave Verizon years ago!

@Freespirit5371
@Freespirit5371 4 года назад
@@MobileInternetResourceCenter Even prepaid is a contract, and yes, Verizon created the plan to benefit themselves but because their customers actually thought unlimited meant unlimited they should now be punished for using the services they thought they were entitled to use.
@imxploring
@imxploring 4 года назад
Basically there is no such thing as an unlimited plan these days if at some point these companies can unilaterally decide that you're using too much data and simply terminate your contract or eliminate the plan.
@Freespirit5371
@Freespirit5371 4 года назад
@@imxploring That is exactly my point. Verizon created the plan which they said was an unlimited plan, customers purchased equipment based on the offer Verizon made and the customers entered into a contract with Verizon, even if that contract was month to month. The point I am trying to make is that these companies don't care about their customers, they only care about how much money they can squeeze out of their customers. People only want to be treated fairly and when companies treat people fairly the people will respond in kind. Sadly, too many large corporations have lost sight of that fact.
@imxploring
@imxploring 4 года назад
@@Freespirit5371 Completely agree.... they churn customers out constantly and force them to jump from company to company. The metrics they use are new customers and equipment sales... they care little about current customers as they know they can abuse them and even in doing so a good percentage will stay with them out of simple laziness. Same applies to cable and satellite TV providers. The simple route is to buy a cheap phone and jump providers when they play these games. I've done it for years and use prepaid with a basic Samsung phone. Currently using the ATT/Walmart $40/25gig plan that includes full hotspot. And when ATT plays their game, which they will, I'll jump to who ever is offering the best deal at that time!
