Video game patches suck. And Here's why.
Ever wonder why gamers hate updates and patches? It's pretty easy to figure out that updates and Patches are stealing away the very things we've purchased.. after we've purchased them.. And are a MAJOR reason games aren't fun anymore. From siege, to Destiny 2, and many more.. here's the latest gaming news on the matter. In this video we look at the negative impacts video game patches from steam, ubisoft, ea, and more are crippling online gaming.
As much as I don't like twitter, I just now made one for your guys :) / liam__manley
Ever wonder why updates are bad? Or why video game patches suck? Or why ubisoft feels the need to to punish players for having fun in every new season of rainbow six siege? here's the complete analysis of gaming's newest tumor: Video Game Patches.
Video game patches are a slippery slope for developers to release broken games, broken patches, and implement business practices that are borderline illegal using in game currency to bypass consumer protection laws.

The thing that really frustrates me is when a 50GB single player game gets a 60GB update. If suddenly the game content was doubled, that would be cool, it's never that though. Most of the time it's all DLC, or micro transaction related. They want me to have immediate access to whatever I decide to buy as soon as I decide to buy it, wether I decide to buy it, or not.

This more so a multiplayer thing, its so your client can render all that garbage other players bought (and hopefully encourage you to buy it too). Patches aren't the problem, the problem is the Korean(freemium) and gacha models western publishers started to force into the market back in the 2000's. Its low investment, high returns all you need to do is hook a few whales.

100% agreed. Remember those days when you bought a game, took it home, and played it? That was it, no changes, no tweaks, no constant meddling from the developer's side. We the gamers are encouraging this by continuing to buy into it with every game.

Growing up playing games in the 80's and 90's and seeing how games are now, has made me shake my head. Sure, there were plenty of bad games back then. But the game you bought was the finished product. Zelda was done and worked as intended, Metroids controls worked and the game didn't randomly crash because the developers thought that they could release a day one patch. Day one patches are the most despicable and horrible practice outside of MTX/DLC. Every single game comes with a day one patch nowadays. I just want a game that is finished and works as intended on day one.

There's also several times more systems running that the user may not be aware of that have the possibilty to cause issues. There's also possibly hundreds of developers, artists, etc working on one project, as opposed to a handful. Especially with open worlds, it takes is one person modifying or removing an asset they believed wasn't being used to cause a crash and no one notice because it takes place in a cave out by the edge of a map.

The problem is, unlike the olden times when people had only one game system so the game can be optimized for that system, people have different hardwares today and you won't expect it to run perfectly for everybody. It's the same reason why iPads and iPhones can run the same android games smoother with better performances because apple forces the game developers to optimize their game for their platform while androids have vastly different hardwares that it's hard to optimize the game to suit everybody

There has always been multiple systems. The trouble comes from the dev's being put on short rations of time, money, and staff but expected to meet the lofty dreams of the press and to beat the competition to the masses bank accounts. Sometimes a mega producer company assumes that with patching they can cut costs in dev time by nuking testing. The purchasing consumer is now today's testing department.

This happened with 2k too and it infuriated me. They added shot stick aiming (in addition to the legacy shot timing) to 2k21 and Mike Wang (lead gameplay dev) pitched it to the community as the solution to building in a skill gap. The aiming mechanic was really finicky, but once mastered, you could become a way better shooter than those using shot timing. I took the bait and spent a year becoming one such person who put in the time and effort to master the mechanic. Most players did not, including those who were complaining about no skill gap in the first place. Result was that they relentlessly bitched about it to Mike Wang. When they started advertising 2k22 they specifically stated shot aiming would remain. Few weeks later I buy it, only to spend the next couple hours frantically researching trying to enable it only to find out it was removed right before launch. Moreover, the 2k21 online servers aren’t even active even tho it’s only been a couple years. So not only did I lose my competitive advantage, I also lost my ability to use all my excellent player builds and in-game purchases that I spent untold hours and dollars on in online gameplay. All because I don’t keep buying their very slightly updated version year over year. I was so mad I haven’t played 2k since, including the 2k22 I was tricked into buying. Then I made a Twitter account specifically to tell Mike Wang how he is a loser with no vision or leadership abilities because that’s the only thing I could think of doing to cope.

I remember many years ago buying a physical copy of Splinter Cell: Conviction. At the time my internet connection was horrible. I specifically wanted the game on disc so I wouldn't have to wait days just to play it. Got home, popped the CD in, expecting to just install it and play it. Oh boy was I wrong. Had to download uPlay and set up a uPlay account, then the game had a 12GB patch and I was entirely incapable of playing the game until that patch was done downloading. A game that I bought on a disc was kept from me for an entire day. It's even worse with consoles, too. Back in the day one of the best things about a console was you could rent or buy a game, go home and just frickin play it. Now if you want to play a game on disc, you _HAVE_ to install it to your console. You may as well skip the disc all together and just buy the game as a digital download. It still takes the same amount of time. There was also another instance where I bought Assassin's Creed II on disc. I was fully prepared to have to patch this game so I wasn't worried about that. However, this game had that dumb "always online" requirement. My connection was so bad that it would often cut out and then I'd have no internet access for minutes or hours at a time. I remember playing through a good 2-3 hours of it, saved and then quit. When I went to resume the game, I had to start it completely over because the game didn't actually save, because I had no connection to the internet at the time I tried to save. uPlay was using cloud saves, and if it lost connection, well fuck you. I had to crack a game I paid for just to be able to play it normally.

Glad someone is talking about this. Gaming "journalists" dont ever touch these subjects. They should, but they are obviously all dependent on game codes, travels paid by publishing companies, etc. so they are completely biased (kind of.. well.. corrupt essentially). So I doubt the IGNs and Gamespots and whatnots would ever do such an in depth piece as this. Good job!

99% of gaming "journalists" are nothing more than shills for the companies. They don't dare write the truth because (as you wrote) they'd risk losing their "privilege" to get copies of game pre-release for their reviews. This is how the game industry works. Until gamers (consumers) stop pre-ordering and wait for at least one month before buying game...nothing will change. Why would the industry change when shady practices continue to offer the biggest rewards. Why would journalists give real opinions when it's clear MOST gamers are only looking for positive affirmation that "this game is 9/10" instead of "buyer beware". At this point, gamers only have themselves to blame if they get hoodwinked. Cyberpunk should have been the last straw to open their eyes to how the industry works.

I definitely believe patches are important, as mistakes need fixing sometimes, and balance patches have a place too, it would suck if you brought a multiplayer game and one character was way too powerful and couldn’t be beaten. I really hate the way the current industry is using them as a crutch though, I think it’s honestly one of the reasons why I’m yet to get into modern gaming, if I had a 100gb patch I would need to buy another hard drive and leave my computer on for several days straight with no interruptions, and I just couldn’t work with that.

This is what I always complain about when it comes to League of Legends, it's constantly new champions progressively becoming more and more overloaded with mechanics so that one skill is not just a dash, but a dash that roots, slows and turns you invisible for 1.5 seconds. When you compare newer champions to older champions it becomes obvious how power creep grew over time. The game is so different now to how it was even only a couple years ago. Edit: It is the same with items having several effects and many more items having active skills that are loaded with damage and utility. The items have changed so drastically.

It's not that simple, yeah you could wait and test the game more, but games are so much bigger nowadays that even with paying thousands of people it will not be enough to test it. And those people cost money every month, the budget will run out. Just play simple games if you want no bugs or get the game a few weeks after release.
@auqanova
@auqanova Год назад
the problem is, it costs money to do testing, and thus companies want to limit it to just whats necessary. worse still, players are too diverse to be able to really fully test anything even in months of public tests; ive seen this in league of legends a few times where people do the whole test period saying a character is mediocre or weak, and then after maybe a week to a month of full live server gameplay, that character is realized to be completely overpowered as soon as some random pro figured out the ideal way to play them, and that knowledge spreads to everyone, meaning when the tests found that the character was either balanced or needed a slight buff, only for them to find out that the character actually needed heavy nerfs. point being testing is expensive and more often than not it doesnt even give you the information you need. plus the longer the character is visible but not playable the more hype for them you lose, and thats bad marketing

It is sweet you think game developers will pay people to test something when they have loads of game testers the people that brought the game they do it for free and when they find something that is broken or over powered just fix it quietly in another update and let the paying customers find another bug for free then rise and repeat that is how it works now. And the real reason game testers are a thing of the past is because game companies never liked paying them a living wage so they all gave up and no one wanted to do it plus the hours they put in for very little pay. Plus the customers do it for them so they don't need testers. People complained about it that it is a buggy mess but they still keep play it and buy the next game again next year so no incentive to change if people keep handing them money to test the game for them.

What needs to happen is a version control system like git. Every tiny thing that changes from patch to patch should be revertable on the player's side. Some games kinda do this, with titles like zomboid keeping major game releases archived in the "betas" section on steam but overall you're just kinda screwed if the devs don't feel like paying that sort of attention. Another big issue is server support, since most modern multiplayer games don't let you host your own server (for literally no reason) you're stuck relying on the devs to support older versions. Or they could literally just *provide some degree of mod support.*
@therealjezzyc6209
@therealjezzyc6209 2 года назад
A change like that would make cheating uncontrollable though. Hackers would since play the patch that makes it the easiest to cheat. Additionally mod support would severely damage the integrity of the game because it makes it easier for cheaters to influence the game. I think that idea makes a lot of sense for PVE and single player games however.

This is why I've always liked FFXIV's approach to adding in new classes, the game isn't balanced around how much damage or healing or whatever on the individual as much as it is on knowing the content, and maintaining maximum uptime, meaning that your party's dps as a whole is important, and doing mechanics makes sure no one dies losing out on that DPS. This means essentially EVERYTHING is viable, at the highest levels of play. It doesn't matter what class you're playing. And very rarely do they outright nerf for no reason, instead choosing to rework classes that have become inefficient or aren't where they should be. And making minor tweaks elsewhere to create a more happy medium.

Patches/Nerfs/Balancing are vital. People want more content which creates more complexity as you stated. Now Siege has like 60 operators. Things that weren’t OP with 20 operators become OP at 60. I think the only issue is if they are intentionally releasing things OP so people buy them knowing they will nerf them immediately. I’d like to think this doesn’t happen, but I’m sure it does some. I think in online games you have to accept your play style, op choices, etc. will have to change at some point. Might not always feel fun at first losing something you enjoyed or something you enjoyed change but ultimately it does keep the game from getting stale. Forces you to learn and try new things and find something else to enjoy if that thing has become problematic for the health of the game. I think that is a good thing for continued enjoyment. PS: Old House was still ass.

I definitely understand and mostly agree with the frustration of patches potentially removing your favorite play style, but I don't think the solution is to just not have patches anymore. More playtesting is definitely going to help solve some issues, but there are always going to be unforseen consequences to any content you want to add as a developer. I can't believe I'm actually going to use them as a positive example here, but Dead by Daylight is actually pretty good with how they do balance changes. Whenever they release a new character, they have a Player Test Build to let the community try things out and essentially assist the devs in playtesting the game (or realistically playtesting the game for them) so they can get more and better data. Additionally, when they make changes to killers (survivors are all just reskins) they usually either make smaller nerfs or offer a buff elsewhere in that killer's kit. This does rarely lead to killers losing legitimate play styles, like how Ninja Deathslinger isn't a thing anymore, but more often than not the changes are at least attempting to let people play how they want without that way being overpowered. Of course, since DbD is asymmetrical, balancing is a nightmare, and with the MMR system everybody is using the same 8 perks because they're the strongest, and it feels like creative expression in the game is dead because why be creative when you can win instead, but I did say I can't believe I'm using them as a positive lol

Sure there would be exploits/bugs that were patched, but the core game stayed virtually the same. I miss those days... Add ons were also downloaded AFTER purchase at one point but now they rob you of your HD space after an "update" and sell you the access key which consists of a few MBs in the store. A big thing about Melee that no one talks about is that it did have a balance patch. The pal version made characters like fox and Marth a bit weaker, but no one plays it anymore. Partially because America has the biggest player base, but mainly because people want to use the stronger versions of those characters.

I've been saying for a long time that there's no longer a that sense of anticipation with games. Or at least not at all like it used to be when you'd get the game home and rush immediately to the console, carefully pluck the disc from the case and set it in the console to then boot it up, watch intro FMVs and jump right into the action without downloads ruining everything. Even _after_ purchase, any excitement you'd have to play is curtailed by updates for game or console. Even on single-player games, you're REQUIRED to follow through with these time-killing updates otherwise the console throws a fit and threatens to sign you out if you try to do anything before performing updates. Cheap, always online "live service" games, updates, constant bugs, complete games butchered to sell in chunks to make sure they eke out that $100 from you, always running the risk of arbitrarily having content/playability of the game you paid $100+ for, taken away when publishers feel like it, and terrible experiences from unavoidable PvP sweats/trolls/cheats. What a fucking nightmare modern gaming is.

Warframe's answer to this: Warframe releases and is either OP or weak and lame. If OP, leave as-is. If weak and lame... Wait a year or two, then *finally* buff them. If that is not enough... Wait a few more years, then release a total overhaul of the Warframe's ability kit.

Great video! I only just discovered your channel and I’m loving it! But while I agree on your points about more buffs for balance, there is a potential problem to that: If you keep buffing everybody else to balance, eventually everybody becomes balanced, but you also lose a sense of identity This happened in world of warcraft, where by the time the 4th expansion rolled out, everybody was so buffed, all sense of class identity was lost, so they *had* to nerf things back during the next expansion. This is a HUGE oversimplification of what happened, but yeah: the point I’m trying to present is that there is a ceiling to buffing to balance.

The Ascent is also guilty of this but they're not making money out of the patches. They have no new content. One day they dropped a patch, nerfed players equipment and abilities and said, "You had your fun!" (actual quote). And the game is a PvE game. They're taking away our fun in a game where you should be able to be as strong as you wanted to. And speaking of making money in competitive games, you're right on the money about that. League of Legends have done this for years. They make a new Champion, make it super strong during the first couple of months of release, grab those skins money from that new champ and then finally nerfing it... Before introducing a new Champion again. I think they're releasing 4-6 new Champions a year now since last year.

Shoot! Whenever new “operators” or “legends” or “whatever” are introduced. It always frustrates me that they are overpowered and need nerfed. I always just accepted that they would be needed in a few weeks, it never occurred to me that the companies could be making them op on purpose with the plan of nerfing them later as a marketing strategy. People who wouldn’t buy the balanced version would buy the op one….

Played Wow since vanilla and League since launch. (Not torturing myself with them for a few years now thankfully.) But it always seemed that balancing something wasn't a huge concern, not after a relative balance was achieved. It always seemed like there was a rotating wheel of bs, nerf this and buff that, then nerf that and buff this. It got to the point where I reckoned it was only to keep it fresh. Once I was with the drooling masses that got hard off hearing patch notes, I knew that was the real reason. We were all just Pavlov's Dog.

It's shit like this why I recommend everyone wait a year after a game or it's DLC has come out before spending any money, since this tumor exists partially because we keep sticking our heads in the proverbial nuclear waste. If we all stop buying games day 1, they can't just toss a patch out of nowhere that completely invalidates what we originally bought, or get caught off guard by a bloated patch. It would also force companies to build back their reputations by making actually good games to entice customers.

It's pretty clear to me there that you approached this from a R6Siege/Counter Strike perspective and tried to apply this to broader gaming because you assumed it works similarily there... but I'm afraid that is not an issue that broadly applies to gaming as a whole. Just a small section of it, and in some games patches/tuning are something actively anticipated by players. Take World of Warcraft, for example. It's a game that has both PvE and PvP in it, and you can see players constantly asking for fine-tuning from the developers because a balanced experience is quite clearly what they want. It is not used as a sort of predatory monetisation scheme (it's a subscription-based MMORPG and the cash shop does not shower you in player power or provide character unlocks), and the approach of "buff everyone to the level of highest performer instead of nerfing the outliers" doesn't always work out because doing so without exceptions would have impacted the difficulty of PvE encounters by making them way too easy when everyone's power levels are astronomically high. The philosophy there is also that you should be able to create a character and stick to it, which would've been made impossible if we agreed that balance patches are bad even if it leaves some of the classes incapable of being even remotely competitive. Your points might be sound for Siege or Counter Strike where there doesn't seem to be an attachment to the characters/guns you're playing (correct me if I'm wrong), but there are games where no longer bringing in patches would've been their swift deaths and frequent tuning patches are not a predatory practice. But still, even if I cannot agree with you putting something like World of Warcraft in the video, I have to admit it's very well made! You speak clearly, your arguments are valid, and the editing is brilliant. Still gave this an upvote and hoping to see more content from you :o

I was browsing YT once and I saw a vid of one Russian Pay-Day 2 YTber, who told one interesting story. That game is still alive just because of DLCs and dedicated playerbase. Devs added medieval-themed DLC once, but sales went horrible, because who would want to buy a crossbow to shoot once in 4 seconds while you can get a normal gun that has a decent amount of damage and fire rate? So the devs just turned crossbow's damage up to a point where it could almost one-tap strongest enemies in the game. After that, when huge amount of people bought it, they nerfed it immediately lol.

I can 100% promise you that not even employees knows the User Agreements. People would be so surprised to know how many bs polices companies enforces on their customers without those polices being even mentioned in the ToS. Most notable example is how EA COMPLETELY blocks your account even if the violation occurred on a single game. There also is the fact that they straight up refuses to unlink your third party accounts or even do something as simple as changing your email and password, which I'm pretty sure it's illegal, it definitely is in the EU, but it most likely is in NA too. Videogame companies are a complete joke, there is not a single one that is worth praising anymore, if you want a suggestion, just stick with indie developers.
