You're ripped your way through Guitar Hero: Metallica and Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and Guitar Hero: Van Halen and you're holding out for the previously announced but still unreleased Guitar Hero: Red Hot Chili Peppers. But if you're truly dedicated to artist license-abusing, you own all of those Micheal Jackson games. Both 50 Cent games. And Journey's Escape.
Long before Ringo Starr's plastic drums were piled in the corner of your living room, OG developers like Midway and Ocean were trying to shoehorn popular musical artists into their games to gain an edge in the arcade. But it was Data Age, creators of the Atari mega-bomb Sssnake who claimed first console blood with this other non-classic.
Released in 1982 for the Atari 2600, Journey's Escape finds you dodging, quote, "Love-Crazed groupies" as you make your way to the Journey tour bus, which is a giant Scarab beetle ( • Atari 2600 - Journey E...
4:16 -- 4:18). Along the way you gain invincibility by touching either roadies or your manager, who is the Kool Aid Man.
Midway released another Journey game only one year later, this time with the band searching for their instruments in outer space.
Ocean developed a game based around Frankie Goes to Hollywood in 1985. You know -
That band. The game, creatively titled "Frankie Goes to Hollywood," tasks you with reaching the mythical Pleasuredome by fully attaining four attributes -- sex, love, war, and faith -- and bringing an atheist murderer to justice.
Who knows.
With the growth of PC gaming and, eventually, CD-Roms, these games started to... basically all be exactly like Myst. You know -- mysterious and full of puzzles and very atmospheric. Myst.
Written by Devo, Devo Presents: Adventures of the Smart Patrol drops players into the troubled world of Spudland, at risk of destruction from Turkey Monkey. Pretty Devo. Not a very good game.
Prince's Interactive is another Myst-style weirdness trove. You walk around Paisley Park and solve puzzles to collect pieces of Prince's symbol.
But the best of this era is Bad Day on the Midway, a legitimately groundbreaking piece of multimedia art-gaming from avant-garde Eyeball-wearing weirdos, the Residents.

If you've never seen anything of 50 Cent's 'Blood on the Sand' game, I highly encourage watching or playing it, as it's just...The worse yet best thing to come out of this kind of a production. Your entire goal is to get back a diamond encrusted human skull, there's a entire turret section from a plane, and you do take downs by teleporting people to 'The 50 Zone' and slaughtering them with horribly named kill moves. It's just...incredible.

My dad would service arcade machines back when I was younger. We actually had one cabinet for the original Micheal Jackson moonwalker game. It was used as a cover up for an illegal poker game that the bartender could toggle between behind the counter if the cops ever showed up. I think I have that board is somewhere in the garage.

Queen had a PC game called Queen: The eYe (the 'y' is actually capitalized). It's relatively rare, costs about $100 on eBay, and is allegedly bad & difficult. I still want it though.

there was also a japan-only game where you play an alternate version of Randy Rhoads (a version of randy rhoads who happens to be Ronnie James Dio's son, and also Zakk Wylde's brother). the game was called holy diver.

The Residents also made another PC Game in the same vein called Freakshow. I have an original boxed copy because a pawnshop took it with some music CDs thinking it was just an album in weird longbox packaging and sold it off for $3,

Hey Sam, love your stuff. Found you a long time before the theorists, and I'm happy to say we have the Aerosmith rail shooter at a local bowling alley still, but I'm pretty sure to doesn't work. My favorite part about it is the fact that there's a way to get a shirt from a menu in the game that would come up after you died your three times.

"Def Jam: Fight for NY" was pretty fun. It was basically Street Fighter featuring rappers like Busta Rhymes, Ice T and Flavor Flav. They each had special moves, catchphrases and own fighting style, you could throw your opponent whatever was around you and occasionally the crowd would hand you a weapon. Good times.

When my bf used to buy game lots online to sell, we came across Moonwalker a couple of times. Still sells for a decent amount. But when we tested the games and "saved" the kids, they would come out and thank Micheal and hug him. A more innocent time indeed.
