What a time to be alive: I get to see three pure indian souls being touched by the composition of an Italian who lived more than 450 years ago in my homeland, in my home city, sung in the language of my ancestors. Words fail me when I try to describe what joy this brings to me.

To all non-Catholics, this piece 'Miserere mei, Deus' means "Have Mercy on me, O God", Psalm 50. This was composed for the exclusive use of Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. Today, this is being played or sung during Catholic Holy Week especially in what we called "The Tenebrea" service. So if you want to listen to it live, you may visit Catholic churches during Holy Week.

When we as humans are fortunate enough to stumble upon music that totally captivates our hearts the way you describe, it truly enriches our lives. It really nourishes our souls. I am also not Catholic, and wouldn’t consider myself religious, but like you, find these types of religious hymns and chants so beautiful. Unless I’m familiar with the translations of Latin into English,I don’t really know what is being said (apart from a few words I’ve picked up over the years), but the words are just “extra icing” on the “cake” that is the actual music.

They don’t have to understand the words to understand exactly what is happening there- man connecting to God. I’m a trad Catholic, so I’m exposed to Latin constantly, so I know what this hymn is about even if my Latin isn’t good. But anyone can feel the worship of God in this piece, and in Latin worship generally. That’s why it is the universal language of the church. My worship is the same as Catholics all over the world. I can go to Latin mass in India and Nigeria or Mexico and it’s the same. The same Faith, same worship. Connecting to God!

Arched vaulted ceilings produce enhanced acoustics because of dead space and curvature. Many cathedrals and chapels follow similar blueprints for this reason and choirs are often positioned at the back on a balcony facing the domed or arched ceiling so that vocals are dramatically amplified and bounced back to the audience. This choir obviously strategically placed their singers in the video to get the best sound they could from their venue. Obviously building materials can change the effect, stone is a better medium for sound than say, plaster.

Behold, I was shapen in wickedness: and in sin hath my mother conceived me. But lo, Thou requirest truth in the inward parts: and shalt make me to understand wisdom secretly. Thou shalt purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, Thou that art the God of my health: and my tongue shall sing of Thy righteousness. Thou shalt open my lips, O Lord: and my mouth shall shew [show] Thy praise. Raeen has said before that he doesn't really like music, but every time something like this is played he gets very emotional and with harder rap and rock type music he gets very into the rhythm. I think maybe he doesn't care for local music and would enjoy music more if he were exposed to other options. It would be fantastic to introduce them to more variety of music from around the world and let them learn what touches them most. In particular I think Raeen would like certain types of metal (like symphonic metal, Ignea and Nightwish are good options). I also think they would all appreciate some bouncy electronic music to dance to, and for that you can't go wrong with Tokyo Machine or almost anything from the "electro swing" genre. This is one of my favorite pieces since I sang it with a choir 8 years ago and that is my all-time favorite recording of it! Besides the effortlessly pure voices and blend of the choir, I love the candles, the placement of the singers and the sanctuary. It was so fun to watch them enjoy it and appreciate the age of the music. I enjoyed their song at the end!

Fun fact, you've Mozart to thank for this piece of music being available to the public. He heard it at the Vatican as a small boy and replicated it note for note so it could be performed elsewhere - Pope was that impressed he didn't have him punished for it.

At one point it was considered sacred and illegal to transcribe or perform outside the Sistine Chapel in holy week. Sometime later, a 14yo Mozart heard it, and went home and wrote the whole thing out by memory, returning once to get the details just right.

You should show them the meaning of the song - Psalm 51 of the Bible (in tradition, king David's guilt and regret from his sins) 1 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. 5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. 9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. 13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. 14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness. 15 O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. 16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. 18 Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem. 19 Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.

Miserere Mei Deus is a musical composition of Psalm 51. In English it means ‘Have mercy upon me, O God’ Here it is in English, taken from the King James Version bible, translated about 400 years ago and possibly the finest work of English literature. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. Psalm 51 is a song of repentence. David had one of his soldiers killed because he was in love with his wife. Later, when he goes to the temple, he realises and becomes conscious of the fact that he did something really wrong. This psalm tells how he starts from minoring his fault to a real confession before God: "I have sinned deeply, because I sent one of my soldiers to war to be killed, so that I could appropriate me his wife." The bible tells the consequences David had by committing this sin.

Hello, and warmest greetings to you all. I’ve been watching the Common Man Show for the last six months, and have loved watching your heartfelt reactions to many videos since last July. This particular video amazed me because of my personal connection to the Allegri Miserere Mei. Years ago, I sang with a professional choir in Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA. I was luckily chosen to perform the small ensemble high soprano part first featured at 4:08, and again at 5:55. It was a highlight in my singing career and personal life. I never imagined this piece would be the subject of one of your reaction video. What a beautiful and meaningful surprise. Ever since the first moment I watched your videos, I loved your channel. From your reacting to the Northern Lights and polar night, watching you on your first plane flights, and witnessing your amazement at Native American pow wows, you immediately became a top RU-vid favorite for me. Seeing you react to the Allegri Miserere Mei amazed me and made me emotional in the best sense. I love and appreciate your openness and curiosity- it makes your videos a joy to watch. And P.S., I adore Babu’s musical offerings after every video. As usual, he chose a perfect song to bring everything together. All my gratitude and thanks for the happiness you brought to my heart today 💕

I heard this song recently and thought it was the most beautiful music I had ever heard. It is taken from the Book of Psalms. Chapter 51. Here is a portion of it: "Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness. In your compassion blot out my offense. O wash me more and more from my guilt and cleanse me from my sin. My offenses truly I know them; my sin is always before me. Against you, you alone, have I sinned; what is evil in your sight I have done."

This particular piece has a really interesting story. The sheet music for it was kept very secret by the Catholic Church and could only be performed at the Sistine Chapel. When W.A. For over a century, the Vatican tried to keep the manuscript scores for this piece hidden and secret by holding all the copies in secure storage, so they couldn't be reproduced. They would be locked away and only brought out once a year or so for the choir to use, and then confiscated until the next year. The Church thought this music was so unique that they wanted its performance to remain rare and special. Then smartypants Wolfgang Mozart attended a performance. With his perfect pitch and perfect memory, he absorbed the notes all at once and went home and wrote them out. Voila! Cat out of the bag. Now it was the world's music.

They are echoing King David's plea to God to have mercy on him though he did not deserve it and to wash away all his sins and give him a clean heart so that he can sing the glory of God in joy again and proclaim it to all the earth. It is sung in Catholic churches during that time of year that they especially seek God's forgiveness.
