The water coming through the ceilings was from busted water pipes run through the attics. I am a Texan, and didn't build with water pipes running through my attic, for just in case... I also just turn the water off at the road and drain my pipes before any little normal hours-long light freeze we have here overnight, for just in case. I had five gallon buckets and gallon jugs of water together for the storm we had. I had ice formed on the tops of my water buckets in the restroom that was there for flushing and handwashing. I live in Texas, and our city was not prepared for a winter storm like this. It was very unusual to have such weather in our area. I had no electricity or water for 5 days. I just layered my clothes, and piled on blankets. The roads were impassable for days, but when she could, my daughter drove to get me. When I left my house, the INSIDE temperature was 34°F. I moved to Wisconsin on '08 and only heard later that after I moved that DFW eventually had experienced 6 inches of snowfall, something that didn't happen in the 38 years I lived there. Oh, and instead of blankets that go on beds, people should get the heaviest moving blankets, they are much better at keeping you warm. In the Upper Midwest of the U.S, our homes are built to handle heavy snow and winter storms. We know how to drive on snow and ice covered roads. It takes a huge amount of snow before we close anything down. Plows clear the roads and we just keep going. Texas and other warm weather states are equipped to deal with this, whereas Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Michigan have to deal with this all winter-a season that goes from November to late April.
@louofm1
@louofm1 2 года назад
Yes this is true. Here in Michigan, we have this amount of snow already, and it will get much deeper. 5-6 inches of snow usually doesn't shut anything down, unless it comes down very fast. It's not uncommon to have 2-3 feet of snow in Michigan. Texas is a warmer climate so they are not equipped to handle what we would consider a moderate storm. The flooding in these houses is usually related to bursting of water pipes and the fact that the homes are not built and insulated to withstand this cold. If the water freezes your plumbing, ice expands and bursts the pipes.

I live in Texas, and have for most of my life. This storm was unprecedented. We usually have very few days of freezing temperatures in the winter, and snow is very rare. The water pipes in many people's homes burst because of the frozen water in them. Stores were empty because the roads were covered in ice and the trucks that usually bring food and supplies to the stores could not drive on the ice covered roads. Our power grid failed because it was not designed to support so many homes for so many days under such conditions. Some people froze to death in their homes, because many Texans do not have very heavy winter clothes or blankets.

These guys need some context about this video. It wasnt snow melting and falling into the house. Texas is warm, generally. A freak storm called a Polar Vortex happened. Freezing cold air stayed over Texas for a few days. People started turning up their heating in homes and caused major stress on the power companies. Also, the storm itself caused outages as well. But with no heat in a home and freezing temps that means water pipes will freeze. Water expands going through the freezing process. So the pipes in homes burst open from expanding water. When it got warmer and people started getting power, the ice in the pipes thawed and starting leaking out the holes and burst pipes.

No food shipments to stores, no power for weeks, and fireplaces are seen as a luxury or a stylistic choice, not a regular thing like in some places. It would be like going to somewhere up north and giving them a two-week stretch of 120 degree weather and expecting them to be able to just deal with it on the fly. :/ Lots of places up north don't have air conditioning, so people would die there, too. and severe heat can also make the power fail if it's not shielded against it.

@@susieq9801 Oh, I totally get that climate change is happening and BAD. D8 I didn't realize you guys were getting 120's now. How often does it happen, and have you noticed your seasons shifting much like we have here? When it's not giving us the snowpocalypse like in February, Texas often keeps it's spring/autumn weather almost throughout the entire winter, now. That had honestly been the first time in over a decade that I'd seen ANY snow, except for one single night a couple years ago that melted in the morning. But when I was a kid, we used to get at least a FEW days of snow a year. 😥 I hate the cold, so I'm not terribly inconvenienced by the warmer weather, personally, but even that still upsets me, cuz I know that it's not a GOOD THING that I don't even need a heating blanket anymore, most days, even in the middle of winter. I don't want my personal comfort levels to be accomodated by mother nature as much as I want the Earth to stop dying! Also, it'd be great if we stopped having mosquitos in winter. I'm allergic, and there hasn't been cold enough weather for them to die off between fall and spring for YEARS, now. Uuuuugh.

@@hellsingmongrel - The town of Lytton, BC literally burned to the ground last summer with record 120+ temperatures. There were terrible floods in the Rockies just this month destroying roads and homes and killing hundreds of thousands of livestock and wild animals. Forest fires from heat and drought in Alberta, BC, Manitoba and Ontario, floods in Nova Scotia, you name it! Today it was 60. Crazy! Canada is being effected more than the US as far as temperatures. Polar bears are starving as the ice cover in the Arctic melts. Animals are dying off from disease, pests and drought. At times it's been warmer in the Yukon and NWT than in the south. Birds migrate too soon before there is food. Many birds and butterflies die when they migrate south due to storms. We need them as pollinators so they're not inconsequential. Glad I'm old but feel sorry for the young people who inherit our mess.

That was a very unusual time for Texas. The temperature dropped lower than usual and interrupted electrical service. Then, people couldn’t heat their homes because there was no electricity. Because there was no heat in the homes, the water in their pipes froze. When water freezes, it expands. The expanding water burst their water pipes in their homes. People panicked because this was an unusual occurrence. When people panick, they buy food and water to save. So, all the store were empty.

I'm from Texas where it is close to 82 degrees on this December day today. It is extraordinarily rare for that snow event here. I can say first hand it was the worst 2 weeks of my life. I almost froze, had the water shut off for 7 days and ran out of food basically. My dad is 82 years old and skinny. I was very worried for him. Many palm trees and other plants and trees died because that extreme cold just doesn't happen here. Very historic event.

I was on of the better equipped drivers, so i helped run errands for them, seeing who needed what and in some cases move people to other locations who still have light and water. i remeber that for the kids to keep them calm had them watching christmas movies, made blanket forts and everyone who got together brought whatever we could and shared what we did had some generators going. helped when ever possible but i know if we have another snow day me and my family are a little more prepared.

I'm in Central Texas and went through this. We melted snow to flush the toilets. Luckily we were really stocked up on food. But the worst part of this was no water! This was truly scary. We didn't have ANY water! My husband and I went searching for water and combed the city to find what we could. Friends brought us 9 bottles of water and the city began handing out water shortly after this. Just horrible! Luckily we didn't have it as bad as other places. We're in a small town and endured rolling blackouts. The electricity would be off two hours and on one hour. We only had to endure this two and a half days but it was awful! We lived in Michigan for 12 years and never experienced anything like this. But Texas is my home state. We usually have mild winters (for example, tomorrow is Christmas Day and the forecast says the high will be 81!). We are surrounded by palm trees in our neighborhood ... only a couple survived. We lost a lot of outdoor plants and a peach tree. We usually don't get snow. This state was unprepared for this and a lot of people didn't survive it.

It was definitely an experience. We already had a generator and knew to fill up the tub w water, and had extra food stored already, similar to what you do in hurricane weather. Gas was a little hard to find. You had to venture further afield to get some. The two of us and all our animals, 7 dogs and 2 cats were holed up in our bedroom for the duration. I grew up without heat or cold air, born in the 60’s, so it wasn’t that foreign to me. I think a lot of Texans learned you gotta be prepared for the worst and hope for the best.

I am a Texan and lived through the winter storm. Some people did not survive it (over 200 Texans). It can get cold here in southeast Texas, but not as cold as we experienced --- not during my lifetime. The coldest I recall before that was 19 degrees F. It usually only gets down to around 30 degrees F. and it only lasts for a few hours at that cold. It got down to 9 degrees F. at my house and was well below freezing for days. The power was on and off, but I don't have much for heat here anyway. I bought stuff to put over the windows and doors to block out the cold and a tarp to make my room smaller to hold in more heat in the bedroom where I stayed. Some homes have fire places, but I don't have one and many homes don't. I bought a sleeping bag to use at home that is normally used for camping outdoors in the cold. It is rated for 30 degrees F. It worked for me and probably saved my life. I turned off all my water and drained the pipes, so that it would not bust pipes and leak. ( I didn't have my pipes run in my attic, either. I never thought that was a good idea, just in case...) I got water ready for drinking in plastic jugs, and had five gallon buckets for flushing the toilet and for hand washing. I had to bust the ice that formed on the top of the buckets in the restroom to use the water in them. I had some canned foods and crackers and stuff that could be eaten without having to cook or heat them. I have a small chest freezer and still had the food I had in there, (it couldn't thaw during the power outages) to cook and eat when the weather improved and the power back was on steady, and until the stores got food in them again. Stores and people ran out of food because the trucks couldn't get the food to the stores. Power outages hurt doing business and getting the food out, as well as the roads making it hard for people to get to work at the places that manufacture and transport food. I am glad this didn't happen while I still had young children at home. All I had with me was a guard dog and a cat. I have two rescued kittens now as well. I hope it doesn't get that bad again this winter.

Ok, thank you for your sympathies, but what you are watching is Texas, an area that doesn't normally see low temperatures. I live in Texas. It's winter, with snow and ice across the northern part of the USA, but it's the middle of winter here and I have my air conditioner on and am wearing shorts. We don't know how to drive on ice or even how to get ice off our windows. We don't have equipment to deal with this kind of weather. The water coming in through the roof is because the water pipes froze and then burst. Places with cold weather know that they need to keep the faucets on and water running so that the pipes don't freeze, expand and burst. I was without electricity for 10 days last winter when we surprised with a quick change in weather. It went from 27c to -2c in the same day. Thankfully I had a fireplace in my house to cook my meals and to stay warm. That's what you were seeing in the video, someone lucky enough to have a fireplace. Water gushed out of my ceiling too. If you notice, people are laughing about it. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. I look back upon the power outage last year as an adventure. But I'm hoping it doesn't happen again this year.

As many people have said, Texas winters are typically mild and it can get really hot in summers. I live in Lubbock and just a few years ago there were several days in a row with 100° plus weather. When the weather is bad here, it's really bad. There was another winter storm about 5 or 6 years ago that dropped lots if snow (think it was called Goliath), but the issues with power being off for extended periods of time and no food available were not nearly as bad as this most recent storm. I would like to see them react to the extreme weather events in Texas because we get hurricanes, tornadoes, winter events like this haboobs (at least where I live), hail storms the size of golf balls and baseballs sometimes, and several other interesting weather phenomenon. The state is really big, so it makes sense there are all those types of weather. I very much appreciate the kind words these gentlemen offered. ❤

I live in San Antonio and that storm last winter was rough. The homes and infrastructure are not built for that kind of weather. Luckily I lived in Alaska for 19 years and had a clue. I always buy emergency jar candles and they kept the temp in our apartment around 50-55 degrees F. We even put one in our laundry room which is off the back porch and opened all cabinets under sinks and "dripped" the faucets until there was no more water. We had a few cans of sterno which we used with a cinder block and metal cooling rack to cook canned soup, chili and other "one pot" meals. We melted snow for water to flush the toilet and always keep a couple cases of drinking water on hand "just in case". Trucks couldn't get into town to make deliveries to the stores. I have no problem driving in snow and ice (I've done it for years) but there was no way on God's green earth I was going to get on the roads with all the people out there with no clue how. We dressed in layers and have throw blankets for our laps and cats to cuddle with. We had no power for 5 days and then no water for another 9 (total of 14) as the water main for our apartment complex burst. It sucked. The worst part for me was the boredom. Too dark to read, no electricity for tv, movies, or internet. Charged phones in the car. Some neighbors weren't so lucky as their pipes burst and water rained in their apartments with ceilings and walls crumbling. All in all I'd say we "weathered" it better than most.
