EXACTLY!! It is absolutely beautiful, melodic, wonderful song. Just listening to it normally, but this… You’re right. If you need to cry, watch this. My ex-husband (a musician) always said he wanted me to remember to play this at his funeral and I never got it because I wasn’t a big country music fan, even though I did like Vince Gill. Luckily, we’re still very close and best friends and he WILL get this song played at his funeral, which I pray is many years in the future.
Watch how Patty keeps watching him to know if he's going to be able to carry his part. How she takes the lead when he falters. The emotion there is palpable.
The instrumental in the middle of the song wasn't planned, it was so Vince could pull himself back together to sing again. He sort of recentered himself by playing the guitar for a bit. Patty is great. She is also a first cousin to greats Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle.
I had noticed that during that instrumental, his body was wracked by sobs he was trying to suppress. The fact he was able to carry it through, with the help of Ms Loveless, shows what a remarkable performer they both are.
Little FYI Patty's real name is Lovelace. She changed it bc when she got started her career there was a popular porn star Linda Lovelace and she didn't want people to assume they was related. Btw they wasn't. True story.
It was touching when Garth Brooks stood and all the other artists in the audience stood to support him.As well as being a great singer, Vince is one of the finest musicians in the business. That guitar segment was outstanding.
I had heard of Patty loveless, but don’t think I heard her songs before this. An amazing voice to be sure, her compassion, and the way she watched Vince so very closely during this & comforted him without overwhelming him… an A-number one person and great singer!! ❤️❤️❤️
I have always loved Patty Loveless, her voice is incredible. But the first time I ever saw this video, I gained a whole new respect for that lady. What you just watched is one of the most emotional things I’ve ever witnessed. She & Vince are close friends, she calls him her brother. They harmonize like nobody else can, and at that Funeral, Vince was so torn up he couldn’t get through it, and what did Patty do? She stepped up and made it incredible! My opinion of course, but I think all the young little chicks that think they can sing these days need to bow down to the likes of Patty Loveless. If you really want to hear what she can do vocally, check out her LIVE version of “You’ll never leave Harlan alive”!
Vince was very close to George Jones. So he's singing a song that he wrote for his brother who passed away at a very close friend's funeral. Not surprising his emotions got the better of him. Patty carried the song and kicked in right where he needed her to. That guitar instrumental in the middle was absolutely amazing too.
@@nikkiLee-hf6gx Pretty sure it's written for both. I know I've heard Vince Gill actually say he wrote it for his brother.. So I'm going to take Vince Gill's word for it.
It was written for both. He wrote the first verse after Keith Whitley who was like a brother to him passed but couldn’t or didn’t finish the song till his actual brother passed which is when he wrote the second verse and finished the song.
You can't listen/watch this version without tissues. The tears always well up when I watch it. When the camera catches Garth standing, with Mrs. Jones weeping, it shows how heartfelt it really is.
Vince Gill and George Jones were good friends. I am astonished that he even made it through this song at all, considering he was singing it at his good friend's funeral. Of course, he would have been mourning the loss of a country music legend and a GREAT singer even if he had not been a personal friend but add to that the fact that this legend was his good friend, and he just absolutely could not hold it together. Props to Patty Loveless for being so supportive of him. I love this song. I had it played at my husband's funeral when he died almost 13 years ago.
The original version was written in tribute to another of Vince's heroes, Keith Whitley: I know your life On earth was troubled And only you could know the pain You weren't afraid to face the devil You were no stranger to the rain Oh, how we cried the day you left us We gathered 'round your grave to grieve Wish I could see the angels faces When they hear your sweet voice sing I'm No Stranger To the Rain is a Keith Whitley song and he has issues with alcohol, but the first verse is also relevant to Vince's older step-brother Bob Coen, who was involved in a fatal car accident when he was 22 years old that led to him being in a coma for three months when Vince was only 11 years of age at the time. When he woke up from the coma, his brain was damaged beyond medical repair and it led to him exiling himself from family and friends until his eventual death in 1993, after which Vince wrote this song in tribute to him.
@@fernbenoit9734second verse was written when his brother passed. First verse was written when Kieth Whitley passed “No Stranger to the Rain” is a direct reference to one of Keith’s songs. He was troubled and battled alcoholism.
Patty is an eastern Kentucky girl. He started getting so emotional. She had to carry him through. George Jones had went through a lot. This song fits him.
That's right my friend...I have watched this many many times, because it is one of those that you will come to, over and over again. Welcome to a good cry. Nothing shameful about it. Honest emotion. All the best to you and yours. Cheers.
Played this at my only child's memorial service. He took his life. I still cry every time I hear it.. Thank you Harri, it's a powerful song songs by two brilliant singers. Blessings to you and yours Harri.
Vince has never done a bad version of this song, but Patty brings it to an even greater height. This is the pentacle of their careers! they will never do better.
Harri, thank you much for reacting to this version of his song. He and George Jones were very close. When he wrote the song, initially it was for his brother, but also for Keith Whitley, who is another country artist who died from drinking too much. It's a song that many people use at funerals.
It was originally for Keith Whitley and THEN his brother died, the song "It won't be the same this year" is about his brother, that one's a tough one too.
The more I watch this performance, the more I begin to think that the guitar solo was done in the moment and not a part of the original performance. I think it was done to buy him time to collect himself. And can I also add that Patty Loveless was an absolute pillar in this performance. When Vince couldn't go on, she stepped up and held the performance.
I absolutely adore Patty Loveless and Vince Gill, and I've always loved this song. I can't listen to it without crying. I've no idea how Vince managed to get through this. Patty was a rock for him during this, no doubt. Kudos to both. ❤
Vince is just about the best Singer/player artist in the industry, and Patty L vocal accompaniment is super, picking Vince up and her powerful harmonies are amazing, she sang right through her own tears, just first class all around, and great insight by Harri , Bravo
Hi. You can tell these two have sang together a long time. She watches Vince n fills in with her powerful voice to give him time to pull himself together to get thru the song. They harmonize so well, but are great as individual singers. Seeing Garth n his family stand, it's like they were giving their strength to Vince. Such an emotional day. Peace to you and yours
George called him "Sweet Pea". Very close friends. This is heart-wrenching. Shout out to Garth Brooks seeing his friend struggle and stood up to show support.
This song was playing in the hospital room as my twin brother was slipping away. There were many people crammed in and around the room. He was much beloved. He was hit on his motorcycle by two teenagers street racing. He was only 2 blocks from home. Everytime I hear this it brings tears. Vince's emotions are so palpable and powerful. Patty Loveless is a powerful artist in her own right, and she was holding Vince up with her strength. Incredible performance. One for the ages.
Haven't read all the comments, so not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but my understanding is that Vince played a 'spontaneous' guitar solo so that he could compose himself. This is one of my favorite videos as it shows the compassion and love that these artists have for one another. And Harri, your standing ovation melted my heart! Thank you!
That was pure class. And your response was so genuine and honest. IMO George Jones was the greatest country singer of all time. Thank you for sharing this. It destroyed me as I cried way more than a 34 year old man should. Yet at the same time it filled me with joy. That's the power of a song with such meaning. God Bless You
Harri, how sweet you honored the artists and Mr Jones I'm sure, by joining in the standing ovation. Thank you so much, and peace to you. Also, even though it was not in this clip, how adorable George Jones' nickname for Vince Gill was Sweet Pea. 💖
The guitar solo wasn't supposed to happen but they let Vince do it, so that he could regain his composure. What an incredible tribute to an icon George Jones. Glad to see all the artists stand up to support him and of course for Patty to help him out like she did. Cry everytime I see this video. Wow! BTW, Vince started writing the first verse for his friend Keith Whitley died but finished it after his brother died. So it has triple meaning now.
You have to understand how much George Jones was loved. He was loved so much by not only his peers but his fans as well. And the song PERFECTLY matched Jones own life... I cannot watch this clip- I was there that day, and havent been able to watch the entire performance again since... I too am one of the people who loved Jones that much.
Harri, thank you so much for your standing ovation for these two people. Vince did better than I could have. I would not have been able to sing at all. The emotion you showed was beautiful.
Vince Gill wrote this song after he lost his brother. One of the most beautiful songs ever written. When you put the pure notes ifVince Gill,s voice and the amazing Patty Loveless. It cannot get better.
Garth standing holding his hat was for the loss of George but, more importantly for the support of the man singing to his idol. That is amazing support and appreciation of a fellow artist. Respect!
this was my mom's favorite song. Listening to it now that she's passed away breaks my heart. Vince Gill and Patty Loveless performed this at Jones funeral. George and Vince we close friends. Vince couldn't get through the song, Patty took over. His response to singing it at the funeral makes it even more heartbreaking.
George Jones was one of the Country Music greats. He was so well loved and had a reputation for helping younger artists to succeed in the business. Country Music will never be the same without George Jones, Merle Haggard and Don Williams.
It doesn’t take much to make Vince Gill cry, is the truth of it. He can weep over a particularly good meal. He’s just a very emotional guy. It’s what makes him a great singer and songwriter. He makes that guitar weep, too.
Vince Gill & George Jones were very close. George gave Vince the nickname "Sweet Pea". Vince wrote the song originally when Keith Whitley died, but he transitioned it over to honour his brother when he passed. As Mr. Gill says, the song has come to mean so much to so many & has helped countless people through their grief. Despite his grief in Mr. Jones' passing, what professionalism, strength, commitment & artistry he showed in this performance. And yes, not a dry eye in the house.
Vince is amazing. Patty is amazing. This song is amazing. This performance is heartbreaking. I love seeing how she is there for him and and the raw emotion.
The way these two Vince Gill and Patty Loveless the way they sing it I don't went through two tissues they are awesome and that song Oh Lord awesome just awesome I mean you can feel it and their hearts and in their music
The shoes Vince Gill is referring to is probably talking about George Jones' song, "Whose Going to Fill Their Shoes?" You should react to it. Great song and video. George was a friend and a mentor to Vince. Lots of deep respect and love going both ways for those two.
I commend you for doing this reaction. A beautiful tribute to Mr Jones. He adored Vince and Patty both. George had nickname for Vince, called him Sweet Pea.. very tough to watch...
Simply amazing! They were very close. George gave him the nick name sweet pea! I love this song in all its versions. It was played a my grandpa's funeral & many others I've attended!! It you'd ever like to listen to another beautiful version, not at a funeral, look for Vince Gill, Patti Lovelace & Ricky Skaggs singing it! Talk about beautiful! All 3 of them have the best harmonizing voices I ever heard! Put em all together & it blows the roof off!!
Bless His Heart!!! I Love Vince Gill!!!! Beautiful Voice He and Patty sing beautifully together!!!! I've seen all of this RIP Possum !!!!! #legend #countrylegend #missed #treasure #king
