The best part of the video is how Patty knows when she needs to take over, and does it without missing a beat, then she falls into the backgrounds effortlessly. She’s amazing.

I went to see Vince at the Ohio State Fair three weeks after his Father (a federal judge in Columbus) had died. I truly thought he would cancel. This was the last song he sang and half way through it he broke down and couldn’t finish. Everyone at the concert stood and sang the rest of the song while he played his guitar and cried. There wasn’t a dry eye leaving his concert. I will never forget it.

I grew up in the 60s an 70s. It was a great time for music. I saw almost every pop and rock singer and band of that era in concert. But it was in the late 80s that I attended a midweek concert in a small theater on the campus of Pacific University in Stockton, California. Apparently, the bands were going from the Bay area down to the L.A. area and booked this show in between. It was at least 4 hours and maybe even 5 hours long. Place might have held a thousand people and there were empty seats. Seems country struggles for an audience on Wednesday night. Show started with Merle Haggard. Then came Conway Twitty. George Jones finished it off. Imagine those 3 legends in a small little place playing and singing like there were 50,000 of us. And this is the God's honest truth. I have not been to a single concert since. Coincidence? I'm still not sure. I am sure of this. If I get a chance to see Vince Gill, I'll be there.

@@bullfrogger1208When we lived in Honolulu, we hopped a plane to Maui to see Vince, as we were starved for some country music, lol. He was there to golf, mostly, but played a small concert at a hotel, where we all just sat on blankets on the grass in front of a small stage. He was amazing, he sounds better live than in the radio. And he’s legit hilarious. Good times.

My father heard this song two weeks before passing away. I'd always prayed my daddy would get saved from the mind that messed him up in WWII. Daddy had been in rehab for 7 months and I went every night except for one. I made sure he ate and was tucked in. You see my daddy had always been a angry man from seeing his best friends being blown to pieces in WWII and he couldn't forgive himself for having to shoot ppl to survive so their fore he thought God wouldn't forgive him. He heard this song like I said and made sure I knew he loved it. Daddys life was changed and daddy found peace before he died around 2 weeks before he passed. I made sure this song was played at his funeral. I'd prayed for my daddys salvation since I was a child and to let the world know it's Gods timing when answering our prayers not ours. Daddy died in 2009 and I'm 52 now so trust me don't stop praying and believing. God has got you.

George was a hero of Vince's, and most country singers of his generation. They were also good friends. George nicknamed Vince "Sweet Pea." George said Vince sang too pretty to have all those hits. The first line is about Keith Whitley who died in 1989, the second line is about Vince’s Bob who died from a heart attack in 1993. Many people overlook that the 1st verse is about Keith Whitley. His death had a profound effect on the country music community, especially Vince Gill.

Little known back story to this, aside from the original meaning of this song and Vince's affection for George Jones, he said on a podcast that it was hearing Patty sing that broke him up. He hadn't gotten to sing with her in a few years and it just hit him like a ton of bricks, so he had to do that long solo to get himself together.
@Gutslinger
@Gutslinger Год назад
Vince started writing this song when country artist Keith Whitley passed from alcoholism, early into his career. The last few lines of the first verse "You weren't afraid to face the devil, you were no stranger to the rain" was a direct reference Keith's song "I'm No Stranger to the Rain". Vince didn't finish the song until a few years later, when his brother passed away. I think he ended his own life. In recent years, I think Vince added another final verse to the song, but I can't remember it.

The late Charlie Daniels gave an awesome eulogy at this memorial. He had a great line about the "cookie-cutter sameness" that you see in "country" music today that caused the audience to cheer loudly. Vince wrote this song after his bother passed away. Never a more beautiful voice and talent for the guitar as there is in Vince Gill. His song, Whever You Come Around, was partly responsible for me marrying my husband! LOVE his music! He's really a all around great guy!

Vince Gill, the Guitar Slinger, is always top notch class act. One of the best songwriters in country music, and I mean REAL country. Not the shit you hear today.

No one can make a guitar sing like Vince Gill can. My very first concert was George Jones. My Grandparents took me. This was in the 90s when George was newly into his soberity and my Grandaddy was worried he might slip. He had many slips by then and had earned himself the nickname "No-show Jones". I'm pleased to say he did show up and was stone-cold sober. It was a heck of a show. I got to hear "I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair" live! Best day ever for little me since I also got to see Tracy Lawrence.

I was right.George has been gone almost 10 years now its hard to believe . I cried like my grandpa had died the day he died and i never even got to see him live but i knew his voice from my earliest days tthanks to my Mom being one of his biggest fans.

Oh , this one kills me everytime. OMG, what a strong emotional song. The solo guitar segment wasn't meant to be this long, but the band knew that Vince had to regain control, and he did it, the only way he knew how ... by playing his guitar. Patty did an awesome job in helping Vince get through this. You'll see in the audience, Garth Brooks and his wife Trish Yearwood standing in support for Vince and beside Garth, the woman in black is George Jones' wife, Nancy. Another great one to listen to is Alan Jackson singing George's famous song He Stopped Loving Her Today. So emotional and tearing Nancy apart. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UiM42bGUFbg.html RIP George as no one will be able to Fill His Shoes (another great one from George). Great reaction.

The best part of this video is when Vince is emotional during parts of the song, yet he sings through his instrument. Patty Loveless is a champion, as usual. I wasn't really a George Jones fan until I saw Vince break down on this version of this song. Vince actually pours his heart out with his instrument! I've never heard a guitar actually sing until this moment, it made me a fan of George, and a bigger fan of Vince. Every guitar enthusiast needs to hear what Vince did here. Unable to sing, but quite able to express his emotions with his instrument! A beautiful moment, and a great tribute to an American country classic icon of country music. Well done sweet pea!

This song has been played at every one of my grandfather's sibling's funerals. As the last male of 11 children this last hit him really hard as his last living brother was gone.... Thank you for such wonderful words on behalf of this song❤❤❤

I wish people would've had you get familiar with George Jones before reacting to this. Might've made it more impactful, as it was to those of us who know both well. There's a different upload of this performance where Vince tells a funny story about him and George Jones involving ravioli, before his performance.

Written by Vince when his brother died. A very personal song. Vince is married to Amy Grant, a Christian singer. He's one of the best guitar players of this generation. He has a problem in this video because he's so emotional. He has an amazing voice when not so choked up. BTW, Vince has been traveling recently with the Eagles!!!!

This song was written by Vince after his older brother passed away, and to honor Keith Whitley. It came out around the tim3 I lost my 15 year old son. I had not heard it before my son’s funeral 22 years ago. He has now come out a new verse to this. You need to check it out.
