I’m only interested in Ineos’ tactics. Why are they wearing yellow helmets? They don’t have the yellow jersey, nor is yellow part of their team colors?
Who’s the genius who thought it would be a good idea to send the whole train of cars up the gravel section directly ahead of Kämna, making sure he had to make the last climb while blinded and inhaling a gallon of dust? How hard would it have been to divert the autos? Or even lightly spray down the road? That can’t have helped Kämna, and it seemed like Pog and Jonas had much less of it to deal with.
"Every spin feels like someone stabbing me in the back with a knife" roglic said that at the end of the stage but still said that he will fight till the end
Really impressed by Jonas. This climb doesn't really suit him perfectly as he's more of a longer climb guy due to his smaller stature but good to see him fight
His attack suited him perfectly... he went on a 20% section and weighs 20 pounds less than Pogacar. It makes sense that Jonas could get a few meters at those grades. Pogacar walked him down and Jonas couldn’t even pedal past the line.
Wow I remember the days that GC contenders only raced for the overall win. Now Pogacar chases and burns matches for individual stages too. Looks like he has the natural ability and talent to take Yellow, Polka Dot, White and even Green. How superhuman.
My father told me that it was boring, as it reminded him of Mercx (nearly 50yrs ago) 😂. As he has been following the TdF since 1965, I would say the comparison might be right...
@@frankburn6312 Was thinking the exact same thing. I'm not sure if it's valid to compare Pog and Yates though. Yates is Mr inconsistency at the best of times, but we've never really seen Pog capitulate in the same way
Roglic man! Pops his own shoulder back in place on the side of the freakin' road!! It has to be incredibly painful to pull on the bars out of the saddle. You could see he made NO effort to go with those guys when Jonas attacked. But still amazing to hold on to third.
,Imagine how would it been IF Jumbo Visma would actually act as a team when the crash happened. Roglič would be at 3rd place in general instead of 13th
@@barbararogina5708 Yes. Jumbo sacrificed Roglic 3 times over the past week: Before his crash on Wednesday when they left him with only Laporte as support (he had no teammates to take danger before him), after his crash when they wouldn't let him back into the WvA/Jonas group & sent him spent teammates who were ineffective at that point (he did most of the pulling himself), then again on Thursday when WvA set a monster pace in the early stage & risked splitting the peloton (with Rog in the second group), when Rog needed to be resting & recovering. Shit ungrateful team who disrespect a real champion.
It's amazing to me that roglic gets 3rd after putting his own shoulder back into place two days ago and people are writing him off. The bruising would be still purple. He'll be close to fully healed by Sunday and I really think this race will change. The other teams burnt out uae which they will do tomorrow and the next day isolating pog more. Majka did stuff all of a pull showing he's not in great format at all. If I were jumbo and ineos I'd be putting high gc guys in the breaks to make uae work ever harder. They can afford it
This is what I've been thinking. Pog is so far ahead man to man. TJV and IGD have got to come up with something different to make Pog work harder early in stages and on a daily basis to have any hope of a late attack Pog can't respond to.
I was yelling at my tv for Kamna, and realized he was going to give it up when he looked behind him. I wish Vingegaard would've taken the stage win, it was so frustrating last year seeing him get second so many times.
Rafał Majka did an insane job there. Imagine being the only domestique left in the team to deliver Pogačar to the final ascent. He must've been gigging properly deep there. I do hope they paid him well.
It's a shame nobody talks about MEINTJES running through the line with his bike (and not being much slower than the other riders). This was for me the proof that the last 200 meters at least were there for the circus show...
@@great_live_music I know :) Froome ran maybe 200-300m before they could get him a new bike, halfway the climb after they crashed on the back of that car. He did finish on a bike, but he didn't have a bike with him during the entire climb.
I'm still really disappointed Roglic had that crash, i would have loved to see how he would fight Pog. But yeah it seems like Roglic has some sort of curse when riding the tour de france....
I’d always been a fan of the SBS Liggett/Sherwen coverage, with Mike Tomalaris bringing cycling into Aussie lounge rooms. Then I transitioned into Keenan/McEwan which grew on me slowly. Have only discovered LR this time around in the TdF. Wow! Best analysis by far. If you do get picked up by some big organisation, try not to lose your style. Congrats on taking the plunge.
Damn i hate it that the tour seems to be decided again by Roglic' unlucky incidents. Wanted to see a true battle between Pogacar, Roglic & Vingegaard but it just doesnt seem destined to be with everything that keeps happening to the Jumbo-Visma riders. Lets hope Roglic gets healthy and the rest stays healthy for some great mountain stages.
i am starting to think if someone is affraid of healthy Roglič, since that story of 2020 and since they are both Slovene... we never get to see man to man competition who is the best... 2nd year in a row strange accident that takes down Primož... so i am wondering is someone affraid that Primož could be better or at least very close competitor if healthy...
The thing is, after seeing Jonas take it to Pog on a short punch when he's already proven that he can possibly drop Pog on a longer mountains stage, I think the Tour is not over. Jumbo would have to improve their tactics a lot, but I think they should try to sneak either Roglic or Vingegaard into a break, and see if they can take some time out. Roglic looks strong outside of his injury, and one great mountain stage can bring Vingegaard right back into the mix. It'll be interesting to see what happens in the next 2 weeks
@@robertcrawford1421 This is what I think INEOS and Jumbo have to do at this point. Following the wheels of UAE just isn't going to stress Pogacar. UAE isn't a great team overall, but they have enough quality to get Pog in a position to keep nickel-and-diming seconds. But if INEOS starts putting guys like Pidcock, Martinez, Castroviejo and/or Jumbo putting Roglic & Van Aert off the front in the break to make UAE chase hard from the gun that could allow guys like Thomas, Vingegaard, Yates, and Gaudu to maybe finally isolate Pogacar early enough to try and make him ride defensively and that's when they can unload and attack over and over again. But if Pogacar just keeps riding like he is I don't think there's a lot anyone can do other than hope UAE makes tactical mistakes.
@@hansernst8108 I wonder if Pog and UAE are burning up their domestiques early in the race for a few seconds here and their and stage wins. It could hurt them come week 2.
In my opinion, this was quite boring, and the gravel 25% finish is not really cycling as intended in the TdF. It's more a 5 minutes circus show (the last km) made by the organization to state the stage is epic... You could watch the last 5 to 10 min maximum, and you've seen it all. You should definitely watch some mountains stages from the previous years, nearly every year you'll have at least one really good stage to watch much more enjoyable than today.
Stage 19 Giro 2018 is a stage I'll remember for life. Tbh this was just a long run in to the climb and a sprint in the last few hundred meters for the stage. Just another of these boring mountain top finishes where everyone waits.
Jonas vs Tadej, with Roglic being the ultimate wildcard to keep things interesting. Even though Roglic is down on time, there's no ways that Pog will just let him take back time and not mark him, which basically means that not much has actually changed. Pog still has two TJV riders to mark, and if he lets either one out of his sight, they're strong enough to win the tour.
Jonas just explodes faster - impressive. Reminds me of Contador when he would take off. It feels like it will take a similar explosion and a pogacar bad day though for any kind of serious challenge. I just hope Jonas doesn't leave it too late like last year...
Agree with the comments here, a truly wonderful stage won by a true racer. Your 3/4/5 times winners come along once in a generation and this guy is capable of more, really do hope nothing comes back to haunt him and we all know what I’m saying.
A lot of comments saying Jonas will beat Pogi on 40 minute climbs. Don't forget that Pogi won Grand Colombier which is 60 min 7%, beating Roglic and TJV at the time.
But I still remember the fact that he hasn’t dropped Vingegaard on any climb where Jonas didn’t have to wait for Roglic, so it’s going to be interesting
@@dkm8703 You’re right, I forgot about Tirreno. Didn’t watch it myself, so that’s probably why. But with that being said, in the Tour and on most days JV can keep up with Pogi. But whether he(JV)can drop him, that my friend, is another question entirely
@@mathiasnielsen408 Vingegaard had a bad spring campain all together, but finished second in the Tirreno GC anyway! Right now he looks good! Granon and Alpe D'Huez will prolly reveal the TDF22 winner! I think Vingegaard can beat Pogacar!
Thanks great stage. Roglic very impressive fighting through the pain of his shoulder to end up 3rd. Gutted for Lennard Kamna. Jonas very much taking it to Pogacar - what saved the race for Pog IMO was the fact that the finish to the marked line was about 10m of downhill enabling him to overtake Jonas.
@@benfried7100 Pog passed Jonas while both crossed the writing on the road at the crest of the 24% section with the finish line coming a short distance later - looking at the photos taken of Pog as he crossed the line with arm raised those last few meters are least flat. If the finish line had been set on the writing then Jonas would have won.
@@benfried7100 The last 10 m flatens out to approx. a few percentagesof incline (there's a speed vs incline analysis happening at several media outlets) - which honestly feels sorta flat/downhill compared to 24%, so... again, climb vs acceleration stills is the distintion on a climb this short and steep.
@@S9999Frank He was at the back of a strung out line, taking all the side wind. All the other GC guys was in the peloton covered up. Just say you don’t understand cycling next time
Let us not forget something before we get carried away, UAE and Pogacar chased the break the whole day which means he was more exposed to the wind, he paced most of the last km after Majka stopped pulling, was able to respond to Jonas attacking and still beat him to the finish. He was definitely the strongest today and a well deserved stage win
Having Kamna win would have helped my velogames, but seriously? Jonas and Tadej on his tail meant little chance of a win. So close though. Hoping he takes a stage this tour. Thanks!
Would Roglic be willing to forgo all GC contention and work purely for Vingegaard? If so, does that give Vingegaard a serious chance for the win overall? Would Roglic get the chance to recover to be able to do this?
@fensterfred i understand that may be the case, but with Roglic’s time disadvantage, would it be worth a shot? If not, can Roglic regain time on Thomas, Yates etc whilst keeping Vingegaard on track for 1st or 2nd?
@@11-inch Well, we've not seen him on anything but punchy short (10k tops) climbs this year, his speciality is generally longer climbs and the last weeks of grand tours - and he beat Pogi by 25 sec in the last 30ish km TT last year, so... (the time differencial of 2021 includes all the time Jonas lost helping a downed captain) - If he wins it will be by not throwing in towel already at least.
@@11-inch 😑they can isolate him in multi climb major mountain stages and kill him having ineos and roglic/vingegaard attack. He can't close everything for 3 weeks and his team is ass
Cycling is super clean so I shouldn’t think this way…but it sure was odd that Pog and Bennett from UAE, and maybe one other UAE rider all went back to the team car at the beginning of the ride…supposedly for a seatpost adjustment. Then you see Pog and Bennett cruising up 20% in the saddle like it’s nothing. Suspect
@@Hellrun I’m glad you picked up on my sarcasm! All I’m saying is that it wouldn’t take a very large battery pack to help a fella up a 24% grade at the very end.
Pog casually brushing his nose on 20% climb when even the crowd was breathing hard trying to stay upright. He puts in a quick burst to take the lead and then immediately backed off, tactically wasting no extra effort to sprint through the finish. He’s not a man, he’s a machine. 💛
My favourite thing about Pogacar is how he gives you glimpses of mortality, just enough to pull you back in and believe there's hope, only to crush it the next day.
Will be interesting what Jumbo can do when Majka wont be this good and burns out quicker. Pogi can be in trouble, wont be easy to cover Vinegaard and Roglic at the same time.
@@luthermueller8648 On a 40min climb no way he would let Rog go, so Pogi has to pull and Vine can follow. I am sure this will happen if there is chance
@@luthermueller8648 no wonder, he pushed his shoulder back into place 2 days ago. It's amazing that he's riding as well as he is. He'll be fully healed by Sunday and we'll see a different race
@@nonwatcher I think in this case it was just a pre planned strategy for UAE to let Majka pace until the gravel section. And then Pog wanted to keep the pace high to not have GC contenders surprise him with attacks. Just unfortunate for Kämna
Today I think Pog underestimated Jonas and Rog. It seemed like he thought he could ride away from them, if he continues to act that way, it could be bad news for him
In terms of TJV I had a feeling before the tour that the main GC contender wouldn’t be roglic but Vingegaard. I think this will be the rivalry for the coming years as Roglic afterall is hitting his 30s already. If he had a chance to win the tour it would have been in the 2020 edition.
What I could see, Pog was nervous because his GF was at the finish line and he knew he had to put up a show. But Kamna was quite far ahead and they didnt gain that much on him...Majka saved the day by telling Pogi to finally take responsibility if he wanted to win
Smart riding by Pogacar. Stay seated and meter the effort. Sure it was only the last 100 meters but it takes such a long time. You can see Vingegaard at the finish: he was spent. Completely. All his biscuits, gone. Pogacar didn't need help and rode up the hill. Odd coincidental trivia but maybe there's more too it: Jonas Vingegaard Rasmussen Born: Hillerslev, Denmark Height 1.75 m (5 ft 9 in) Weight 60 kg (132 lb) Team: Rabobank (now Jumbo Visma) Michael Rasmussen Born: Tølløse, Denmark Height 1.75 m (5 ft 9 in)[1] Weight 60 kg (132 lb Team: Jumbo Visma (was Rabobank)
I am still a skeptic on pogacar - he is head and shoulders above his competition. Thomas and vinegaard are in great form and somehow this guy is so much better than them - something doesn’t make sense.
Vingegod nearly won. What are you even talking about? They finished on the same time at almost four hours. You probably weren't even alive during the Armstrong era or you wouldn't be talking such nonsense. 🤦♂
Instead of being skeptic on Pogacar, you should be skeptic of the whole Peloton. The fact that Pogacar is above his competition isn't an indicator for anything fishy. One athlete being head and shoulders above everyone else, happens regularly in any other sport aswell. Of course I am not naive though. The probability that the whole Peloton is clean is close to zero.
Thomas never was the best climber looking at his numbers, so that doesn't say much. Vingegaard isn't a punchy rider, so is it really surprising one of the most punchy climbers currently beating him on short climb with a punchy finish?
I do not know if winning by exactly 0 seconds means you are head and shoulders above the rest. He won 2 sprints (today and yesterday), it is not like he just rode away from everyone
Just give him the title already and lets move on to the next race. No doubting Pog's talent but the inability of anyone to challenge him is turning this into a boring procession. And what kind of race allows a whole team of cars in front of the leader on a gravel track, throwing smoke and dust into his face, I bet Kamna could hardly see. Poor organisation.
@@shandytorok259 you are referring to two stages which are not high. Kiauntsin stages. Last year Vingegaard cracked Pogi and he may well do so again this yea
I feel bad for him but it makes roglic's ride all the more impressive considering he described himself as feeling like he was being stabbed in the back all the way up the final climb, but still lost only 12 seconds. Hopefully Vlasov recovers and does what Ben O'Connor did last year, and gets back into the fight for gc.
The last climb was ridiculously steep. IM wondering if Kämna would have been better off running instead of riding... Do you actually have to bring your bike to the finish line?
Not attacking when he lost the wheel makes me think Pogi is a masterful marketer . Every other team can thank him for keeping them relevant, in the discussion and on camera.. An exciting / closer seeming tdf is good for all parties right. Credit where it's due
Dream on. Pog has this in the bag. Planche is never a big decisive climb. The first real one Pog will just beat his rivals again. He wins when he wants and they have no answer.
A little later and Vingegaard would have won. This stage was for Pogacar who is stronger on the small steep climbs, but Vingegaard is stronger on the longer slow paced climbs.
Great video, but not sure why you see this as a positive for a more competitive tour? Because UAEs domestiques wont be as effective on a longer climb? I’m a bit disappointed it was so controlled and we just got a replay of the “leadout for Pog” as the only real attacking move of the day
LR, would love to see some stats or analysis of how often Pogacar crashes vs the other GC riders. He reminds me of peak Sagan who somehow seemed to crash way less than everyone else. It just doesn't make sense to me how some riders seem to just be far luckier than others. Yes, positioning and bike handling play a role. but crashing into a stray hay bale or omi-opi sign or Colbrelli body checking you off the road aren't really the result of bad positioning or bad handling.
Of course they are the result of bad positioning. At least the hay bale and the omi-opi sign could have been avoided by not taking the very outer line. Pog spends a lot of watts to be up front all the time. Might be worth it in a long grand tour if he avoids a crash or two.
Do you think Lenni could have staid in the front group when he would not work all day? I think he would be a good GC rider ( top 5 vuelta) but I like his breakaway riding mor.e
Why do Pogacar fans think that all other drivers are incapable of challenging him? Yes, he’s the best overall, but there’s no need to degrade other drivers, such as Jonas, because they’re trying. Jonas, for one, has also succeeded in breaking Pogacar. Why can’t fans just let riders ride without spurring up all of this hate.
CLUTCH KING Jonas is coming closer and closer to BEATING the odds on favourite and already crowned king Pogacar! He showed real killer instinct on today's climb. Pogacar cannot hide any more behind his little helpers Bettiol and Stuyven - the chase is on! Jonas will give him a run for his money in the Alps!
I don't know if you're trolling or if this is a real opinion, but looking at the last 20 meters, the one with the killer instinct is the one finishing first, and looking back at Jonas to show him he's willing to win every stage that he can. Maybe this is not the right tactic to win GC, but until today Pogacar is the one with the strongest killer instinct.
G is riding well. Ineos need to clear things up and put the protected rider mantle on Geraint and make the rest of team ride for his GC. They have enough horsepower in the team to maybe put Pog/UAE under some pressure. As much as TJV are the obvious contenders their tactics are often mystifying and somewhat shambolic 😂
Looks like Pog didn’t immediately attack because Majka pulled off and waved him on too early. At the finish Majka said he didn’t realize there was still 900m to go, and apparently Pog also told him at the finish that he left him too soon. But in the end it didn’t matter. So… 🤷♂️
Jaune was just too tired, that's why he gestured Pog to go, Pog had no other choice than go, so he did.....on the final 200m he sensed, that Jonas was strong, so he let him go to the front-be alone and not pulled by Pog- and waited for the very moment when he attacks from behind, so Jonas ran out of road to react+ran out of juice too ...textbook...
