I've had a season ticket at Southampton for many years. When we were at The Dell the visiting managers had to walk along the touchline from the corner to the dugout. Cloughie was the only one to get a generous round of applause from the home fans when he came out. Respected by everyone.
Brilliant. 🤣 I used to rush home from the under 18’s disco when I was a kid to catch match of the day just to hear what cloughie had to say. Legend. Characters like him are sadly lacking in todays game.
People forget Clough was a fantastic striker as well as being a unique and brilliant psychologist with his players. No one will ever be the same as him.
The record is there to see. I think what counted against him was possibly going on a little bit too long. People's last impressions often last longer than the first. On the one hand he was a prolific striker as a 'young man' (lol) and a very successful manager in the early to mid part of his career, but the descent into alcoholism and mediocrity was what the younger generations knew of him. Still, even at the 'mediocre' end stage, he was still winning trophies. Most PL sides outside the top 4 would love 2-3 League Cups over a 4 year period (especially as the Forest side of the late 80's had nowhere near the quality of the late 70's side).
Great player. Great manager to some. Drunk most of the time later on and demoralised a few kids by telling them the wouldn't make it but they went on to be international stars. Clough weren't always a great judge of a player.
@@Bloxdio_God True. In fact it was even acknowledged by Cloughie himself. He always said Peter Taylor was the judge of good players. Cloughie was (early days) more of the motivator. The quote from Clough was that he was the shop front and Taylor was the goods in the back. Most of the astute signings made in the Derby and Forest days were Taylor picks. If you look at the players bought under Taylor, Lloyd, Clark, Withe, Francis etc. Contrast with Clough's later Forest buys like Fashanu, Tommy Gaynor and Sean Dyche etc. It was pretty hit and miss. I'd only say Gary Parker and Roy Keane were decent buys under Clough alone (Maybe Ian Woan at a push). But obviously by then Clough was also hamstrung by the drink...
He once did an advert on local radio for East Midlands Electricity Board ' The team you can trust' selling fridge freezers. ' We've got big ones, small ones, some as big as your head, even bigger than my head'. Miss Cloughy. Great manager, great character.
What Brian Clough Did With Nottingham Forest By Winning The European Cup 2 Years Running Was Simply Stunning Then & Still Is Now. Brian Clough = LEGEND
Forest the only club to have been European champions more times than they were domestic champions. Clough was indeed a legend. His man management skills were brilliant.
He also won the league with Forest first season after they were promoted to Division 1. That’s like someone doing the same thing today, getting Forest into premier league then beating the likes of City and Liverpool to the title. It’ll never happen again. Absolute legend of a man. RIP Mr Clough. Gone but never forgotten.
@@Sicario-Gamer but if you remember liverpool was never this great when klopp took over he had work very hard to complete with city but I am big fan of clough
And to bring them up from old division 2 to Division 1 (now premier league) and win the top league in your first season straight after promotion is better than Leicester city's title win.. You won't see either happen again. Winning 1 champions league in those days was hard enough as was different format, but to win 2, back to back, incredible, especially for a side that were just recently promoted the season before. Goes to show what a club can achieve if it gets the right manager in, and gets the players to believe in his ideas and philosophy and work hard, even average players will be better under the right guidance, it they have to want to listen and learn as well. Don't have to be the flashiest or the best, just do the job asked of you, do it for the teams gain, not your own..
Cloughy was a football legend in more ways than most ! He was a cracking forward, But he excelled in management, like no other, Yes of course The FA cocked it up, they said He was not the man for England, and we all know he was perfect for the job, And what's more, Our long drought of major honours would have been much shorter !
Rob Harding - Shame wasn't it, everyone knew he WAS just the man for England but would never be the yes man that the FA wanted. We ended up with that very nice Ron Greenwood who won very little in 20 odd years.
@@who9387 Yeah, what a missed opportunity, by those whiter than white F A officials ,Clearly they cost the country dear, in the way of trophies for the success starved supporters.like you and I.
I was a ball boy at Spurs we had the boiler room as are changing room . Cloughie wanted to see us all. Lined us up told me of for having long hair and a ear ring. Then talked to us for ages and brought us in their changing rooms ! Days of Stewart Pearce and des Walker amazing!
Two win 2 consecutive European cups with little Nottingham forest, the greatest football achievement ever by any manager, l swear we would of won the world cup with cloughie in charge, RIP Brian you are a legend.
He wouldn't get an interview at a club these days. Imagine him in the EPL and dealing with Sky Sports "pundits". No 1 he'd play to win so he'd rock the pecking order of the big money teams. No 2 he'd be fined after every interview because he called Neville, carragher & Richard Scudamore soulless Dik'eads. Great manager. Bob paisley & Shankly wouldn't get an interview either.
Me and my mate were fishing on the river at the back of the Trent end it was early morning he came with the squad and was watching us for a while asking us how the fishing was My mate said how will it go Saturday Brian ? He said if you bring your boots you might get a game our center half is fucking useless ,lol Kenny burns sitting pissing his self They just don't make em like cloughy anymore
If I was a player i'd give 300% for Brian Clough, i'd run through fire. The guy is an absolute legend, proper old School manager and the last of his breed!
I can’t remember what match it was but I remember seeing cloughie on tv giving a forest supporter a clip around the ear cos he ran into the pitch ! Lol. I loved the man. Legend.
Kids in Nottingham were wearing T shirts with 'Cloughie hit me' slogans for weeks after :) At the next city ground game, the tv news people did a piece where they had all the fans whose ears Cloghie clipped, I think there were four or five, and they all said 'sorry for running onto the pitch .Mr Clough.'
Yeah a true legend and a proper gentleman yeah can't beat the old classics on TV like benny hill love thy neighbour that wouldn't be allowed now upset all the snowflakes
Back in the 1960’s Derby County we’re stopping in the same hotel the Ostend Palace in Belgium on their way to a European Cup match as me and my family. I was about 9 years old. I managed to get the players autographs but when I approached Brian he said come back later son after my meal. He frightened me to death and I never went back. Later in life I followed Nottingham Forest and bought his autobiography which he kindly signed. It took me nearly 40 years to get his autograph. Great man and what a legend.
@@lennycurtisxo read my comment again. You are making yourself look like an idiot. Brian Clough was the manager of Derby County back then and not Forest. My family used to go on European tours every year where my dad and uncles would meet up with ex army buddies and tour the old battlefields. I was a child so I can’t remember the exact year, late 60’s or very early 70’s but the place is correct. I remember this as I had a menu from their table that said “ The Ostend Palace welcomes Derby County, the Rams are on their way “ this is what I got signed.
At Trent Bridge a kid went up to him and asked for his autograph clough waved him away quite annoyed - after the over had finished Cloughie beckoned the kid to come over - as he was giving his signature he said 'young man, never interrupt me in the middle of the over again'
So many layers to this, which show his absolute mastery of human psychology. In this little passed of events he: 1) Sent somebody else twice because he knew Wimbledon would ignore them and play the music louder. This sets up the later move from himself, but also means it’s not him who gets seen being disrespected. 2) Knew Wimbledon’s players would have too much respect for him / fear of serious sanctions to lay a finger on him if he walked in there and smashed the ghetto blaster. As scary as that doing that would seem to a lesser mortal, he had the ability to reason that he wouldn’t actually be in any danger from doing it. 3) Knew the Wimbledon players would have a sense of shame that would affect them badly in the game - rather than a righteous anger to get back at his team - because of the way they’d acted when politely asked to them the music down. They’d even be kicking themselves they’d let somebody walk into their changing room and do something so humiliating to them once he’d left and they’d gotten over the shock. 4) Show all his players the likes of Fash and Jones weren’t actually that dangerous. 5) knew that while Wimbledon would be more determined than ever for the next game once they realised they’d been played so masterfully, point number 4 would take away the main weapon they had anyway. When you stop and think about it, that level of genius was wasted as a football manager.
The only knee taking he'd approve of is the kind that used to be taken by the likes of Hunter, Jones and Keane. I'm sorry he's not here to ram this pc shite up the league's arsehole. What a bloke.
Vinnie Jones was a proper mad man midfielder loved seeing him play. I wasn't a Wimbledon fan but went Goodison Park in the Wimbledon end in the early 90's last day of season when Everton were gonna get relegated. So lucky to stay up Wimbledon won the game apart from a couple of linesman outrageous decisions bribery or incompetounesness just atrocious officials. But the highlight of the day was Jones doing a proper WWE clothesline on some Everton midfielder just stuck his arm out and smashed him down me and my mate were pissing ourselves
I was in Manchester uniteds dressing room in March 92 when man utd were playing wimbledon. The wimbledon dressing room was down the corridor and yet the noise was deafening from the geto belaster.
I actually saw Cloughie play (yes, I'm that old) when he played for Boro. They came down to Rotherham and smashed us 4 nil. Cloughie was an absolute beast....scared of nothing....into everything.....reminded me later on of Alan Shearer - no second guessing, just bang into the back of the net.....he weren't that bad as a manager, either ......
Cloughie old English manager the best of our day won't see it again its old fashioned morals of that time today its a woke era you said what you said then and it was funny can't say anything anymore people get upset so easily now glad I grew up when people were normal RIP cloughie they are all puffs now
Well said and totally correct, the only way I can watch my favourite comedy ain’t half hot mum is on RU-vid, they won’t put it on tv cos it’ll upset the snowflakes ☹️
The only football manager i could listen to. His crack just showed up the banality of the rest of 'em. We need characters . All ya get now is the pound note chasers.
Taking Derby from 2nd division to league champions to european cup semi finals was quite an achivment too. That Derby team was one of the best I've ever seen
I always held Brian clough in high regard,in 1989 when he started clumping his own fans for invading the pitch that regard was elevated even more so,a man who suffered no fools.
Went to forrest with Chelsea. And he had signs made and put in front of us to say no swearing gentlemen please. After the season before when we took the trent and caused havoc. Well this was a red rag to a bull. So the bad language started. And he marched across the pitch in his green track ie top. And stood in front of about 3000 Chelsea. arms crossed just staring at us. The old bill were shitting themselves and forrest didn't want it. But he didn't give a toss. Everybody loved cloughie. 🏴🇬🇧💙💙
