It's time for another Vintage Gadget video! A lot of you commented on my last thrift haul and said you wanted to see the Veg-O-Matic in action, so here it is. This handy gadget was one of the first "as seen on TV" products widely marketed through television commercials/infomercials. Invented by Samuel Popiel and then marketed by his son Ron (Ronco) the Veg-O-Matic was a household name in the 1960's and beyond. Let's test out this Vintage Gadget. Thanks for watching! Potato Pancakes (Swiss Style)
(I cut the recipe in 1/4 so I didn't make as much)
4lbs raw potatoes- diced
4 eggs, separated
3/4 cup flour
pepper- pinch
1/2 TBSP salt
1 large, sour apple, peeled & diced
1 onion- diced
Peel & dice potatoes, add egg yolks, flour, pepper & salt, diced apple and diced onion. Fold in beaten egg whites. Heat shortening in pan very hot & cook 3-4 potato pancakes in the pan at a time. They should be brown & crisp.

Oh Laci, this brought back a terrible memory. Fat, shy little girl in junior high school takes her Mom's new Veg-O-Matic to school for her "demonstration speech". She pushes the plunger down on her potato and it launches itself out of the machine and flies across the classroom. I have never gotten over the horror!

@@addiw8015 What's sexist about it? They did a great service and I hope they were appreciated for it. I know now that I do it how many hours work per day it can be! Any time-saving gagdet is most welcome.

@@addiw8015 You're absolutely right that there was a lot of sexism (and still is in many things). I'm just wary of today's trend of reading it into every single vintage thing, like this pamphlet that was just trying to be helpful.

When I was a..."developing"... teen, it happened rather quickly. I used this gadget to make fries with my grandma several times a year, and it had been a couple months since the last time - which meant plenty of time for growth. I also inadvertently tried to make fries out of my chesticles. It was not a pleasant experience for me, but my grandma seemed to enjoy it - she tried to contain her laughter when she brought me a stool to stand on so my top half would be high enough not to get in the way. Then she politely left the room "to get something" and I heard her cracking up! From that day on, when the VegOMatic came out of the cupboard, so did the stool.

Love taking trips back in time! I have a Nativity scene purchased from a local department store (high end store) and while the box is collapsed, the Nativity set was 2.00 and change. It's still beautiful. I love remembering my youth and I'm 61 so most of the things you show are right in line with my childhood! Nostalgia!! ♥️

Loved this video. I haven’t seen the Veg-O-Matic used in years. The main thing we used it for growing up was for fries. Never used it on onions and as for the apple , it may be the peel that was giving it a hard time. It’s probably like you said, dull blades. That was funny... 1095 meals a year...take care ❤️ 🇨🇦

I love watching your videos. I have this in my kitchen closet. Got at thrift store and have not used. I’m going to pull it out and try it. I was looking at your videos and thought one thing is missing. I was born in 1957. It’s pearls around your neck. That will be perfect. 👍🏻👍🏻. It’s comforting watching your videos. I have one from my great aunt! She used it to cut potatoes for homemade french fries. They were the best! I love potato pancakes, too. I like how your stove has a countertop space on it. Very nice. 😊

I have a modern version of this, but I sure remember this! Mine now also has a problem with skins on fruits and vegs. I find peeling helps, altho I am a fan of unpeeled, so I use a knife more than my own gadget. Thanks, Laci!

My Veg-O-Matic actually came with the wedge ring and a sharpening stone for the blades. NEVER seen the stone for these before!!

Oh I have a funny story about these. My mom used hers to make dad French fries when he was in the mood for homemade ones. The ladies in my family are very well endowed and one day she got her endowment caught and the thing locked! She had to have dad help her get it unlocked and told him he was making his own fries from now on. It didnt cut her but she had a massive bruise for a long time from it.

My parents had one of these, and yes, when it is new it is sharp. I used it all the time. Saying that, it needs to be put on a lower table and you do need to push hard on it every time you use it. But it does work , my parents had eight kids and it was worth the money in making French Fries alone. I don't think my Mom ever tried the recipes that came with it, lol.

My mom was the Queen of new items in the 60’s -73. She saw it on tv she bought it. People came to the door selling she bought it. I remember the veg-o- magic. I must have gotten the gene. But not as bad as her. Love the canisters behind you my daughter would love it.

I got one made in 63. It cut potatoes and carrots fine, but hung up on softer things like onions or peppers. What I did was buy a really small flat file and gently sharpened all the blades. That, plus the oil or lube someone mentioned should make you really fall in love with your Popeil machine!!! Love your channel Lacy!!! 🕰🕰🕰🕰🕰🕰🕰🕰🕰🕰🕰

Best time I have had all day,I laughed until tears ran down my face. I am in my 70's. and used mine to make fries when the kids were all here. They were always tricky,and food always got stuck in the top,and the locks would lock at the worst time. The vintage gadget that I love and still use is the Mouli,that one is really handy and easy to clean.

I have the vintage veg o matic from 1961. Love it. Use it often for slicing french fries, sliced potatoes, sliced carrots. Mine sticks to at times, just the nature of the beast.

We had one in the 70s made tons of coleslaw , but also used a motorized rotary type.That was Christmas as a kid.😀 There was lots of Gadgets in the 70s!

Since 1960, we’ve engineered most produce to be much larger. Potatoes and onions of 1960 would have fit in the gadget without cutting them into smaller chunks. Placing it on a lower countertop would make it easier to use. Super fun video. Thanks so much for sharing your experience with this retro gadget.

My mother still has and uses her original Veg-O-Matic from the 1960's and it still works great. I have never had the problems you had in this video. My opinion is that, even though it is old, it is a great item to have in the kitchen.

I bought one of these for my sainted mother as a gift, back in the Mid 60s and she LOVED it. It came in the smaller mostly red box that is shown just behind the device on your video, so it must have been one of the originals. I was just a young feller back then and saved my pennies up for it. Not sure of the price but the amount $9.99 comes to mind.

I have a friend who is a wonderful cook and we were just talking about the Veg O Matic yesterday. She said she has one and uses it 3-4 times a week. I've been looking for something to quickly dice/cube potatoes so that's why sought out your video and watched it. I think you've convinced me that I need one of these! You mentioned that when the blades were new and sharp, it would have likely worked exactly as advertised. I found one in ebay that has all the original doo dads in the original box and it actually DOES include a little blade sharpener. So after watching your video and hearing your commentary, I think I'm going to get that one so I can keep the blades nice and sharp. I love your kitchen and will definitely be checking out more of your videos!

My grandmother always did everything the old fashioned way, but I remember the gag was that the products never worked as easy as it looked on the commercials. It was fun watching you used the gadget making a recipe from their brochure. I think a lot of the food back in those days was bland and I had forgotten that until you mentioned it being “meh” Great content as always.

We had one when I was a little girl and I remember my mom having the same problem. I think some of the issues with the chopping ability has to do with wo(man) power. It chops really well at the beginning but as the chopping goes on, and whoever is using it becomes tired it becomes more difficult to give it your all when using the machine(not sure if that happened to you too). It was definitely a good workout, haha. I remember loving it when my mom used it to make shoe string French fries for lunch to go with our fried sunny side up eggs. 😋

what a fun video. I immediately asked my momma if she had one or maybe in Grandma’s stuff. She remembers it but is not sure what happened to it. Grandmas been gone for a bit. But my mom inherited her properties. So you never know what I’ll find when I go treasure hunting. My husband hates it….lol

Back in the day my Dad liked to watch RonKo's (?) TV ads. But they also had people demonstrating them at State Fairs, etc. Dad always liked to watch some of the demos at the WI State Fair. That is where he bought a Veg-O-Matic and we used it for many years. Hey these people made/make good products. Spray blades w/cooking spray. Made great fries!

How fun! It might work better if you had peeled the apples first. Also, maybe brushing a little bit of vegetable oil, or a small squirt of non-stick cooking spray on the top inside would help prevent things from getting stuck up there.

I’m 63..through my 40’s. Yes thats the way almost all of us ate..at home..lunches prepared at home to take to work or school..so yes 3 prepared at home a day was the norm..also look at pictures from 50’s 60’s 70’s..note the trim waist lines and hips...and we didn’t go to the “GYM”...and less expensive..eating out was a treat..or reserved for special occasions..we gathered at the table 2 times a day with no electronics..think of how reversing back to that could save our society our marriages..our children..OUR HEALTH...
