I was lucky enough to be sent a generous sample of early 90s Egoiste, and now I finally get to smell the differences between versions of one of my favourite perfumes ever.
As always, comments are loved, likes are appreciated, and subscribers are my friends.

Great take, did justice to both. Wore it when it first came out briefly as L'Egoiste which is strikingly similar to Bois Noir. The Cologne Concentree is a stunner too.

I'm glad you have cured my sanity! I bought it when first out. Circa 91. On a trip to France and it was called L'egoiste. No one believed me when I said it had changed it's name. Even the girl on the Chanel counter.

Just csmexacross your review, we'll considered. I have the original Egoiste and love it with a passion and of course wear and enjoy how it sits on my skin. My quest is for Boir Noir, to get that one as a sampler at least is a long journey I'm still on. Will now watch your other films as they come so thanks for a measured review.

I enjoyed this video. This comparison of the two Egoistes is similar to my comparison of my vintage 1981 Antaeus Pour Homme and my current 2023 Antaeus Pour Homme. The current Antaeus is sharper but lighter than the vintage. Vintage Antaeus is darker and more pungent, and leaves a longer scent on my skin and clothing than the current. And like Egoiste, Chanel has pretty much retained the basic scent of Antaeus.

What you described are my scent memories of Egoist back in the 90s. I remember that tobacco-ish note and the sandalwood was more rounded and the spices didnt jump out. That's why I loved it back then and I like the newer formulations. Great one Pep.

Thanks for your comparison Pep. I like that you went into the comparison without biased thinking on old vs new formulations. I appreciate that Chanel took care with the reformulation. I think the majority of people won't be able to afford to hunt down older vintages of their favourite fragrances. For those who love to do so, it's likely like treasure hunting. Today we were hit with another huge snowfall and the temperatures are dropping into the -20c and colder range for the next few days. It's mind bending to think that Australia is in the peak of your Summer and likely very hot. Have a super day and take care! ~ Jenn

I bought a vintage Egoiste, like yours, and I totally get your point. The sandalwood here is way more prominent than in the current formulation, and it's less spicy especially in the opening. Great content, Egoiste might be my favorite fragrance of all time!

LOL I'm in the same boat, I have a 90's vintage sample and a 2010 bottle and thought 'I wonder if anyone's done a side by side' and here we are. Thanks for your take on it Pep

Your content has always been one of my favorites. Genuine reviews and perspectives among so much artificial content out there these days. Been a subscriber of your channel for years, just rarely comment. For some reason though I’ve never checked out your instagram but will definitely do so.

Thanks for that, very interesting! I've worn Egoiste since the early 90s and I definitely noticed a change when I got my current bottle, I think my third, a few years ago. It took me a little while to get used to but I got to loving it quickly. One thing I thought I noticed was that the earlier bottles had a very distinctive juicy tangerine note in the opening and the later one didn't, it was something closer to orange? Who knows. I might be crazy, to me Egoiste can be pretty fruity and plummy, maybe due to the rose. In any case, the difference between older and newer was not shockingly huge to me.

I’ve always been curious about the older versions but like you I love the current one so feel satisfied with that. Chanel seems to put care into reformulations. I’ve tried a lot of EDTs of Exclusifs and can’t say they’re better than EDPs, just a little different.

Hi Sir, loved your comparison...Your bottle is probably a batch of 8xxx or 9xxx In 2015/2016 they issued a new bottle (square with a smaller cap) and apparently it was again reformulated. The latest versions I have tried are indeed a bit lighter. Funny I also picked up a kind of oud-like note in the older ones, but that must have been the association of different woods. Thanks for reading me

I seem to recall it was released as L'Egoiste in Australia. Wore it for a few years and then bought the current version a couple or three years ago. To compare them I can only rely on a thirty year old scent memory. Very very close as far as that memory is concerned. The modern version, as a stand alone fragrance is a beautiful rendition. Cheers Pep.

Same here. Got my first bottle at the release in Europe (1990, L'Egoïste) and wore it to death for years. Totally love the scent. Then drifted away from Egoïste and hesitated for years to buy a new bottle, afraid to dammage the memory. Finally, last year, I bought a new bottle. And again, it is an absolute love story all over. For my nose and on my skin it last at least 16 hours. But, going on memories 30s years back, it seems a little less strong or pronounced then it was back in the 90s. I always smell the cinnamon as most prominend note, back then and nowadays, but to my recollection, the rose note seemed more apparent in the original. Not sure though... Anyway, it is and will be one of my favorites. Funny thing. In the 90s this was a shocker for a men's scent... now, spicy like Egoïste is far more common. But still, not much out there like Egoïste.

I've got a couple of bottles of the 4.2oz splash from 1990 and I treasure them. They seem to have held up perfectly, though I can't speak to how they would've smelled when they first came out -- the citrus is very much intact and lasts for awhile. Doesn't smell 'off' at all. Something i've noticed is that splash bottles tend to hold up better than spray versions -- maybe the plastic from the tube leaches into the scent over time? This definitely seems to be the case with Minotaure anyway. I always go for the splashes, if it's 30+ years old and I have the choice!

I had the same notion - old Egoiste is like fine wine in comparison to the newer one. Now I kinda regret selling a 1993 bottle but it was a splash which I really didn't like :) fortunately I still have a small decant of Egoiste Cologne Concentree

I use to buy Legoiste in the early 90s and it was so strong and sweet smelling, I always got compliments when wearing it, sadly though in the mid 90s they seemed too changed it in England they seemed to drop the L off the name and certainly the smell was totally different I was gutted.

I held out for the longest time and got the vintage form first. It's a masterpiece full stop... But to be fair the modern has been well maintained.... I too question whether or not the maturation or materials bring me to favor the vintage. But whatever the case the modern leaves me wanting... Thanks for your thoughts Pep ✌🏻

As you love Egoiste, have you tried the Geo F Trumper Sandalwood? Often described as a more opulent version of Egoiste. Cheap as well and worth a sniff!

I actually own it, but tbh i don't find them that similar. The Trumper seems a lighter, citrusy sandalwood to me.

I love my bottle of recent Egoiste. Personally I see no need to hunt down any overpriced, probably spoiled bottle of vintage Egoiste...some snobs in forums will say different, but I really don't care and would rather buy a couple of recent additional Egoiste.

I wore Egoiste from when they first released it in Paris in the late 80's...they changed it in the mid 90's because several of the ingredients were made illegal and the newer version didn't last and smelled cheap in comparison...I tried it about 12 years ago and again it didn't last but it didn't smell as cheap...God only knows which version of the recipe they are on now, always trying to keep up to date with the trends...sadly they lost a great original recipe as it had been in the research department for 10 years...I now stick to only niche brands made in France that I buy at Marie-Antoinette in Paris.
@kevinjewell233

They replaced many of the original components with synthetics and that is why it smelled so cheap...

I would think that perfumes or colognes over 15 years old would be stale. I'm just going on my own experience. I'm not saying the old perfumes and colognes are not good but they aren't the same as they were when fresh. I think expecting a perfume or cologne to hold up beyond 10 years is just asking too much.

Ow man you missed out. I bought my Égoïste 100 ml edt and après rasage in spring of '92, still own the the bottles with a little in them. I received a new bottle of Égoïste edt about two weeks ago and it's a disappointment for me. Égoïste wasn't that spicy and didn't have, I'd say didn't have that edge if you know what I mean. Don't get me wrong Égoïste is still better than 98% of what you find nowadays. Still, the current version is weaker, different and just a shadow of what it used to be. Anyone who says, and there's a lot, the reformulations aren't that bad...they don't know what their talking about. Enjoy the vintage. Greetings from Netherland
