Vitamin D & Brain Health: How D3 Affects Mood - Thomas DeLauer
I talk about vitamin D a lot, but I really want to start making the connection to brain health, because a lot of us are battling with anxiety, we're battling with depression, we're battling with mood disorders and we don't always want to talk about it. But what if I told you that part of the solution very well could be our relationship with vitamin D, what we're getting from the sun. And not necessarily just the vitamin D that we're getting from the sun, but the vitamin D that we're getting from our food and potentially from our supplementation. I'm going to dive into the details of how that connection actually takes place.
According to the National Library of Medicine we found that about 40-50% of Americans are already deficient in vitamin D. When you start thinking that vitamin D might be linked with mood disorders, well, then it's pretty evident that we need to be paying attention to it. Now the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that the link between vitamin D and our mood lies within the neurotransmitter serotonin. Now that serotonin neurotransmitter is what's responsible for us having a sense of well being. For us feeling calm, cool, and collected. Quite the opposite of feeling anxious or potentially depressed. Well, I'm going to get into the intricate details of it in just a minute, so you understand how serotonin works and so that you can make the connection. But what we have to remember first and foremost, is that a lot of these ties are still widely unknown. This is a pretty new topic, pretty new investigations when it comes down to vitamin D and the brain.
Let's take a look at serotonin really quick. Okay? It's the job of serotonin, again, to help us feel good. The process of actually creating serotonin in the body is pretty interesting. You see, it comes down to something called trip to fan. What trip to fan is, is an amino acid. Those amino acids are usually derive from proteins that we consume. When we consume those proteins we generally require carbohydrates to allow the trip to fan to enter into the brain. Well, what researchers are now finding is that vitamin D could be a very critical component in that conversion process. Essentially, eat protein, get the trip to fan, have it go into the brain with the help of carbohydrates and then vitamin D comes in and assists in the metabolism and the creation of serotonin. Right at the very root of creating this neurotransmitter that helps us feel good.
Now researchers are continuing to back up the fact that everything seems to be lying in what are called monoamines. Monoamines are a group of neurotransmitters including serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. All three neurotransmitters that truly regulate how the brain operates when it comes to feeling good. Again, if we see that link between vitamin D and the creation of these monoamines you can get the hint that well, it might be pretty critical to overall feeling well.
There's one study in particular that I really want to reference because it backs a lot of this up and it was done by Oregon State University. What it looked at was a 185 female participants that were all college students, okay, between the ages of 18 and 25. What they did is they initially measured their vitamin D levels. They found naturally that a lot of them were already deficient in vitamin D. But what they did is they monitored these women for an extended period of time.
They monitored them over the winter time, over the spring, over the summer, and they watched their vitamin D levels fluctuate. Of course, naturally, in the winter time vitamin D levels were significantly lower.

I never knew before how much vitamin d could effect a lot of health issues. I was in and out of doctors trying to figure out why I was so sick all the time. Finally found a doctor who listened to my symptoms and ran the right blood-work. Severe vitamin deficiency disease. I’m now taking 50k unit rx strength a week and finally seeing a difference.

Love your videos! Few years ago I was getting sick all the time and not feeling well. My D3 was a 9! My daughter is a 9.... meanwhile they say it should be 30-100. So that’s severely deficient. I’m looking into her mood disorder symptoms now as they are quick to prescribe meds...a few years ago getting my older daughter sports clearance hers was 16.9 and her doctor prescribed D3 at 15,000 two times a day. They say that was Severe. Vitamin deficiency in the body causes Dis-Ease.

Hey Thomas...been on Keto since March. Had an annual physical, and my Doctor was very happy. Since my last physical in 2017, I dropped over 25lbs, and my blood work was stellar; big note--my fasting blood glucose levels went from 120 (diabetic) to 108! As I lose more weight, I expect it to drop even more. My doctor anticipates me being able to drop blood pressure and GERD meds in the future as well. Thank you so much for your video content, it really helps keep me focused! PS--My doc is starting keto as well! :)

I live in England, my doctor prescribed me several months of 20,000 unit Vit D capsules, to take every other day. I can tell you this massive dose of Vit D had a strange psychological and physical effects on me. My skin feels like it's been in the sun all day, but without the burning of sunburn, but a tingling sensation all over, quite pleasant really! Also, I've been watching 4k beach walking videos, it's like my brain thinks I'm in a hot country and this is my way of trying to feel like I am. I've never been interested in beach walking videos before. Welcome your thoughts. I will tell my doctor about this when I go back for further blood tests.

This is a spurious finding. Correlation between mood and D levels only due to common variable of sunlight, not a causative relationship. Reduced sunlight leads to depressive mood though reduced pineal stimulation (this doesn't involve vitamin D).

I suffer from anxiety ( that is triggered by stressful situations at work and difficulty handling insensitive management, coworkers and customers.) Most people don't care or understand what anxiety /depression does, or how it affects our ability to work with it, and function at 100%, all the time. Doctors prescribe synthetic products to calm me down, from being easily upset or affected. (most are garbage and is by trial and error). I totally agree with you, about the missing vitamins, and supplements (choline, lecithin, vitamin d3, sertatonin, testosterone, (over 52). And the fda is full of crap.

A couple of things I've been curious about that I haven't quite seen fully answered in any of the videos I've watched. I'd be interested in seeing videos on them in the future. 1) What is happening in the body if you're fasting, but also working out? I've seen you say that you'll work out in the morning fasted, and not eat until the evening, therefor getting the fat burning benefits all day and then giving your body everything it needs at night to recover. But are we intended to work out during extended fasts as well, and what is happening to our body if we do? 2) We've learned that, in the grand scheme, you won't burn fat in the presence of insulin. But it's also commonly said that low intensity cardio will burn fat instead of glycogen stores. Is this the dietary fat that we consume being burned, or can the body still pull from fat stores on the body in these cases?

Excellent Videos Thomas! Two ideas for future videos. I am a competitive cyclist now fully Fat adapted on Keto week 5. 1. My heart rate is up about 10 beats per min average throughout entire workout, Ive read maybe Potassium and or Magnesium deficient, maybe electrolyte imbalance? Common? 2. When I know I will need Hight intensity Burts to keep up with the Peleton or take my turn on the front, this requires bursts normally fed by Glycogen, I now fall flat and even almost bonk, Is there a dose of carbs that can help this without killing Keytosis? What is best for these situations and why is my power down so much on this diet?

Regarding the video's quotation of geographical sunlight research (observance): It's not so much that the northern climate has less sunlight (less intense sunlight of certain UV rays, actually) than it is the amount of skin people expose themselves to the cold air during the winter. I barely expose parts of my face during cold northern winters; however, I supplement the lack of sunlight with exposure to half the tanning bed's recommended maximum time at the gym, or Vitamin D3 pills (not both; thus, no stacking, or else I won't know how much tanning is needed). Those that have to temporarily abstain from calcium, Vitamin D3 and any other bone growth related nutrient or supplement for catabolic therapeutic reasons, have the option of maintaining their good mood, from a pain focused state of mind, by consuming certain terpenes found in certain strains of cannabis that creates a euphoric and happy feeling. Understanding science is such a relief for a better life, for many states of health a person might be experiencing.

As a result of anxiety, I have psoriasis. Great.. More disease! This has to be linked with the gmo foods we are being poisoned with chemicals. Let's see what we can do!!!

Well... if we can't get D because there is not enough sun where we live or if we can't go out in the sun because of a skin condition ... what do you suggest? Somebody, in the comments, talk about calcipherol in the vit. D supplements... true or not????? Could you give your input on this please?

What is the optimum way to get Vitamin D? I've heard a variety of sources say that it isn't as simple as taking a multi-vitamin and getting outside one in a while; that you have to take comparable levels of potassium and pair it with nine rutabagas while doing a headstand or something.

Vishnu V Mohan D3 is the most active form. It doesn't come from plants. Plants don't have cholesterol only ergosterol. Sun + ergosterol = D2. Doesn't function like D3. Liquid D3 is OK but it's not vegan fyi.

1 to 10. For example it’s recommended to take 100 mcg of k2 to every 10.000 IU of vitamin D3. 😉
