Vocal coach From Hawai’i Analyzes Iam Tongi’s Touching American Idol Audition 

I have never experienced an artist like Iam, who can easily transfer his feelings in singing so effortlessly. There are many talented artist on American Idol, but there is no one who comes across as touching as Iam. My humble opinion, but I'm a fan forever and wish him continued success. I think Iʻve seen Iamʻs audition video alone or in reactions dozens of times by now, but I still tear up every time I listen to him and see his impact on the judges and viewers. Iʻve noticed it hits a lot of men especially hard when they identify with the loss or illness of their father, although it brings tears to the eyes of many others who have lost a loved one or dread the thought of losing someone in the future. Thatʻs Iamʻs power to express his emotions in a beautiful and powerful way and to make connections with those who are listening to him. There are a lot of young reacters (most probably into hip hop) who obviously have never watched American Idol or listened to the kind of music and artists on the show but are taking advantage of his popularity to get views and likes. They donʻt recognize one or more of the judges or know who Bonnie Raitt is, and two guys had never heard "The Sound of Silence" before. Of course, no one knew who Spawnbreezie was or his music, but Iam is helping to familiarize all kinds of people around the world with the kind of music he grew up listening to and singing, and all kinds of people have become big fans, even if they only watch his videos and have no idea whatʻs going on with American Idol. I think once his music starts going up on iTunes during the show, heʻs going to break some records, no pun intended. Please keep reacting in the more meaningful way you do, and weʻll be looking forward to more reactions of Iamʻs performances!

I think especially with that song and his experience of loss let’s us all feel it with him cause, we all have felt loss and we all had to battle through it. And hope nothing but the best for Iam. I love the way you explained his voice and how he sings.

I've commented before I think there are probably better technical singers in the contest but none that can pack so much emotion in a song. His voice in this song makes you sad and soothes you at the same time. Whether he wins or not, I really hope this is the beginning of a long career for him.
