The widest vocal range in octaves from anyone in recorded history by a minimum of 6 octaves.. recorded an album while on tour with this band that is absolutely nothing but random-ass sounds he could force from his mouth...

My fave FNM song. It's often argued that he is the best vocalist in metal/rock and has a range of 6 octaves. His response? ""I think that range thing is all bullshit. I don't think that I have the biggest range. And even if I do, who cares! ... This is not like the Olympics of vocals. [laughs] I could make a record without singing a note, and I'll be happy with it." - Patton 2019

From what I understand he is pretty much self trained. Mike enjoys nothing better than locking himself away alone and experimenting with his vocal folds. Check out 'Adult Themes for Voice' which is soley sounds he made with his voice, it's like marmite, love it or hate it. Mr Patton is kinda like a vocal version of Frank Zappa, both amazing composers, both incredibly experimental, both holding a raised finger to the music establishment.

Substitute John Zorn for Zappa (no disrespect to Zappa; he's a legend, just not one that informed Bungle or, specifically, Patton) and you got it.

Faith no More are classified as Funk Metal or experimental Rock/Metal or alternative Rock and sometimes as a Post punk band. Actually they have a high range of genre in their discography so... pretty difficult to put them in a defined category but they are surely not part of the progressive rock genre like Dream Theater or Pink Floyd for example.
@arsmor1end1
@arsmor1end1 Год назад
Patton's (apocryphal?) official voice training story infamously involved a single session with an unidentified, but famous, LA vocal coach who came on to him during the session, which convinced him to figure things out on his own. He cites John Zorn, the avant-garde sax player/composer, with inspiring him to experiment and envision his voice as one would with any other instrument. Serj from SOAD describes Patton as a "vocal instrumentalist," which hits the nail on the head. For vocal coaches, aside from specific songs or projects, the answer to pupils who want to sound like Patton should be: "Don't try," for the sake of vocal preservation. However, his ability to sing "poppy" lines over dissonant tones, honed in high school with Bungle wunderkinds Trevor and Trey would make for an interesting dissertation for some music nerd!

*The keyboardist, Roddy Bottum, came out and wrote the song "Be Aggressive" about his experiences to which Mike Patton sang without any reluctance taking into account it could've changed to way mainstream audiences saw him.* Bottum went on the co-found the alt-pop band Imperial Teen.

Yup, the ‘Angel Dust’ LP was released in 1992, and all these years later is still one of my fave albums. I discovered it through a buddy of mine back in high school. I went over to his parents’ house one day and he was blasting it. I just sort of fell in line with him, and started grooving to it, too. Soon bought my own copy, and dived deep into it, as it is surely FNM’s most haunting album.

May I suggest *Demetrio Stratos* and his band *Area* , Ken? Is an Italian Progressive band from the 70s, one if not the most iconic band and voices in the Italian music but quite unique and extraordinary. There are a few songs in English as well but what really matters is Demetrio and his voice. If you believe Mike Patton, who I love to death as one if not the greatest voice today and probably of the last 3 decades, has "invented" something new... you must listen to Demetrio Stratos, whom Mike Patton himself _[he lives in Italy and is with an Italian woman as far as I know]_ knows pretty well and, I'm sure, idolize Demetrio not less than us Italian fans. Cheers!

Patton is one of the most complete singers, with a vocal range from Eb1 to E7, six octaves and half tone in total. He can't be framed in a single style, because he moves from metal, rock, rap, guttural, lyrical...... So that u can appreciete his vocal talent it's no enough with just one song. Ashes to ashes, for example, u'll think he's not the same singer

@Mx.RumpusParable
@Mx.RumpusParable Год назад
As another said: no, no training, absolutely not back then. If you ever heard his pre-FNM/demo & live Mr. Bungle stuff from when he was a teen it's just.... there. He went into his first FNM album intentionally making his voice very nasal-whiny and off-sounding a good bit and while it works great for the album it annoyed their producer/bosses because he refused to do what they already knew he could. He had just made an artistic choice and stuck with it. Demos and lives from before it (a lot of fans, even, think he did some massive changeup in abilities between the first and second FNM album and no... he just decided after a couple years of touring that he wanted to get back to doing more variety with his voice). While maybe something has changed and I missed it (since I don't track the man's every career move lol), last I'd read and heard in interviews is that he's been frank that while he'll experiment with ideas for his voice on his own and will practice older songs to make sure he recalls how to do them/the words, he has been frank that he doesn't/refuses to do any vocal practices/exercises to develop and maintain his voice nor see a vocal coach. He meets and works with new people on projects and picks up skills from that at times. He heard just came out of the box with these strengths (vocal quality and style/changeup abilities) and started working with John Zorn early in his career which inspired to keep expanding what he could do. Patton has a very firm view that vocals are another instrument rather than something to be put on the top/front of the music of a song..... that it fits some projects, others it doesn't., but that in either case it's like any instrument being a focus in a piece of music. He's done a massive, massive amount of work where he *is* parts of the instruments for other people's projects and you wouldn't know unless you were familiar with him or saw the credits on the song. The guy has had rather an odd career path due to his vocal abilities.... basically done so much and so varied of work that his level of success has ironically dropped him into a commercial-music/general-population obscurity outside FNM for the most part. Most else followed of his is by fans. Outside of metal I'd suggest sometimes trying out a song or two from his project Mondo Cane where he does orchestral 60-70s Italian pop songs.
@edwardyoung8241
@edwardyoung8241 Год назад
It's extremely pedantic to even mention it, but I would say 'alternative metal' instead of progressive. Progressive metal, invented by Fates Warning and a couple of other contemporaneous peers, is very, very different. As far as being this bold in front of the 'normies', I totally agree. However, it's worth remembering that this was a very special time in music, where bands like FNM, Primus, and the wacky like were top 40 artists. The early 90s was a very special time, comparable to the late 60s as so much, well, better than other times in music.
