I love how Tori Kelly still keeps full support despite the tension being there. First attempt was still supported. Tension co-existed with support. Second attempt was perfectly supported and she had amazing resonance on the note. Her throat was more relaxed and open.
I feel like Jade's run was intentionally slurred. And Christina and Mariah made up for their sloppy runs with their sheer speed😭😭😭. I think it's interesting seeing the things Christina Aguilera does well technique wise vs. The things she messes up.
Christina does a lot of her techniques purely for style. she finds her sweetspot in her voice, then immediately obliterates it with a healthy dose of style. this is a woman who knows her voice so well that she can do anything with her voice and still be relaxed.
@@badbada3003 uhm Chile anyways.... She's been slaying at runs since day 1. Saying that she was never good at them is very silly because obviously she has some poor attempts but every single singer has that. Check out their recent performances, she's been killing it
Being a good singer isn't necessarily hard however being a good vocalist is quite difficult! 😓 Thanks for this insightful video 📜😍 Natalie Weiss is such a phenomenal vocalist and vocal teacher. Her sense of humour though 😅
@Jorge Escudero You have the right concepts but matched it to the wrong terms. Eg. To the masses, Adele, Jennifer Hudson & Keke Wyatt are better singers than Beyonce, however Beyonce is a better vocalist than them!
Anyone who believes Adele is a better singer than Beyonce is obviously deaf. I think people think Keke Wyatt n Jennifer are better because they naturally hit higher notes than Beyonce and they're still wrong.
Omg yeaaah I know that arianators are gonna @ me but gosh do I hate it when she riffs 🙄 her jaw is all over the place it's just so distracting... it looks like she's chewing the notes.
For me it doesn't matter if Kesha is included in the singers with tongue tension, I am just glad that she is included here. She is finally being taken seriously as a singer.
Same I feel like Demi's runs have gotten progressively worse. I think because both Lara and now Demi have really heavy voices, it makes it harder. Like when Demi was younger and her voice was light and bright she was pretty amazing at riffing. But surprisingly, she actually has some recent runs that I would consider superior to most of her runs from when she was younger.
Lol anybody can riff. It takes time and practice and these girls simply didn’t put in the time or practice and it shows. You look at singers like Brandy, Jazmine Sullivan who are super agile and you know that they put the practice in.
For Lara, riffing is easy..she was used in this video riffing and running. For other examples listen to Vocalise, Immortelle, or I Guess I Loved You. She rarely riffs because riffing is "ornament" and I believe Lara eschews riffing, in the main, because it interferes with the simplicity and purity of her melodic line.
@@InvisibleTacoMan demi has finally improved nowadays and she seems to understand her limits now, her 6-notes runs are good for her and notes separation are better
I’m a beginner singer and I really appreciate your videos!! Your commentary is so helpful in identifying vocal issues, because I’m still learning about the voice and can’t always tell what sounds good/bad. Thank you!
Fantastic video as always. I just wish you showed more examples of the first few things like breath support. Also I didn't notice any glaring grammar mistakes on my first watch please keep narrating these you seem more confident in this one.
@@gonzalojerez1749 no... theyre accurate. watch the i love me live, she did 10 notes a second... and the riff at the end she did (which is in thus video too) are good too..
The video is great! But how did you divide the vid into sections like that? It's so cool that I just need to place my mouse on the play bar and then I can see which part it belongs to.
I really appreciate the content and the intention behind this video! The only thing that I would say is that maybe next time try to put more examples and clips. Besides that, good job!!
Some people didnt get rasp or scratchyness due to throatiness. Note that most of the time damage becomes more apparent in singers with a pharengeal placement. Is this what you meant by throatiness because pharengeal placement is actually ideal. An example is Chaka kan whose voice became clearer and a bit forward/piercing due to a more nasal placement. Speaking of a forward/less spread sound, this occurs more in singers who spread their lips/open their mouth too much. Other teachers teach of a triangular mouth to help focus the sound.
People get technically better mixed with vocal ability. Singers such as Christina has amazing vocal ability. She can do many things with her voice that other cannot even attempt to do, even with her “bad” technique. Just because they have great technique doesn’t elevate their vocal ability
The Magnet First she is an untrained singer with a 4 octave vocal range, that’s the first impressive feat. She has amazing agility even in the highest part of her range. She has an extensive falsetto up to C#7. She possesses the ability to produce clean belts as well as distorted ones at her discretion. She can take any song and make it her own. Her ability to growl belts in a register that isn’t as developed is impressive. She can improvise on the spot and give you stellar performances. After 20 years of singing with her so called bad technique, she hasn’t lost much of her range at all. In fact, she can still access E5s if she chooses to mix. She can match and do more than other singers who are trained. She knows how to use what she has and she’s damn good at it.
@Noah Smith my point exactly. also, her recent instagram stories where she's singing proved him wrong too.. her riffs definitely got better and are nowhere near as bad that she shouldn't even do them.
Throaty “placement” doesn’t exist. The placement itself is even impossible! Again the resonance is one of the most difficult things to properly achieve and so jojo is not “resonant” at all. I’m agree with jaw tension though ;) Also everyone sings with “tension”, but it is a necessary one.
I actually don’t recall Sohyang having any pitchy, slurry riffing moments, she’s not the most advanced in agility but she seems to know her limits and she doesn’t attempt things too difficult for her
@@aintnootherfan for the pitchy part, believe that I watch every performance of her, she's defo pitchy when sick or without any warm ups. She has also weird runs in songs like everyone, when she tried to do a fast run it become almost a legato without any note separation. Also, the descending scale in "fate" from the B5 has a lot of pitch and off notes moments in live
i guess demi was just coming up with that riff and didnt know herself she was gonna do it so she didnt get the time to sort it out and get it right note by note
Nah, she isn’t good at all when it comes to riffing. Sorry! Aside from her throaty, slurry technical issues, she is simply not musical with her runs. Ariana is a lot better and more musical than her!
Coming up with a run on the spot isn’t difficult to any singer other than Demi 💀 All singers do it and can do it correctly, especially gospel singers for example. Stop using this lame excuse you don’t need to practice a run to sing one 🥴
TSC gaming I don’t understand why you’re tagging that time. It’s her way to sing that part and it is NOT bad at all lol So please, show me some video of Lara singing bad, or off key, or flat, or even not hitting the notes. I’ll wait for a while 👋🏻
To show how to do a proper riff , you should have inserted tori Kelly doing any of her riffs because lord 😍 hers are so perfect much better than Mariahs
I’m sure Christina has also had many teachers or more technical singers tell her that her technique can be damaging, but she does it because she likes the way it sounds. And so do many others. It’s more so about maintaining the voice and being as healthy as possible; one over compressed belt in one song during one performance won’t kill your voice. But you have to know, for example, if you plan on doing that on tour or something every night it can lead to serious damage.
@@beymariah2188 i think artists are singing for the audience and not themselves so... If the audience are giving her the 'Voice of our generation' she is selling that tone... And this technical singers mostly sound the same especially on high notes so.. too much of anything can make u sick i guess and that is why they are not as famouse as the un technicals whose sounds are distinctive from others .. my thought
I think there are three type of singers: 1 - the one that are aware of their weaknisses and try their best to be better ex : Kelly clarkson shes said her aint no other man performence was ok cause she knew she didnt nail the riffs and altough she has been classified as non melismatic singer in the last three years shes been doing wonders with her agility Ariana : there wasnt a year in her career when i didnt say oh shes in her prime shes always working on her technique exoanding her supported range , nailing the lows that she only dreamed of doing , and shes very aware if her flaws like enunciation whiles singing pop and extra 2 - diva behavoiur vocalists : Xtina : despite her throatiness , tention , sploppy riffing she refuse to change her terrible belting thechnique or use less strainy appraoch , she thinks her technique is that perfect that she gave vocal lessons , like after all that years shes still battling to hit a proper C5 Maraih : the only reason that i mentiond her is that after her vocal damage and tiredness she still refuses to do vocal therapy or hire a vocal coach or do a proper atleast 1 year vocal rest ,or quite drinking like i know her throat her choice but she couldve avoid a lot of issues taking care of her voice and learning even though she mastered vocal technique could take some notes from celine dion 3 - they know but they refuse to do st about it : great example would be selena she know she is not the best singer and she stated that shes working so hard on her self but people still hate on her I mean working on ur acting make up line writing skills yes we can see a diffrent but if u took the time to go through a jounry of vocal lessons and working every day to have atleast a decent amount of understanding of thechnique but now she only cry about it plus she probably doesnt even take vocal lessons
I’m sorry but I really dislike morisettes voice. It always sounds like a forced tonal quality and it sounds like she is always trying to sound like a mix of mariah xtina and Whitney. It’s a little cringey for me.
Beyonce has literally stated Mariah inspired her to do riffs and runs because of Vision of Love. Tori, Jojo, and Christina are all heavily influenced by Mariah and have said as much, and no one else in this video besides her has consistent agility throughout their vocal registers, with shit not even most operatic singers would try (trilling in the whistle register, two-octave leaps, 60-note runs, etc.). She is a legend in the industry with one of the most interesting voices of the past century and you're a RU-vid comment - take several seats hunty.
