I feel like the problem with some of Demi’s run is that she doesn’t know when to stop and she drags it and eventually goes off key because her musicality isn’t good to make complex runs on the spot

Mariah and Ariana are literally opposite. When Mariah is not able to belt, she whistles instead. When Ariana is not able to whistle, she belts instead with exciting and creative runs. I love them so much haha.

Bad Dodging is the issue Dodging in general is not a problem. Note changes definitely show which artist is just a simple singer or an actual vocalist.

I didn't really realize how sloppy demi's runs are until someone pointed it out to me and explained in this video. She's still a great singer. I just never really paid attention to her runs before.

Seal singing 😂😂😂 yeah I can’t stand that style. I remember when it was unique to naturally have that sound. Now it’s the trend. Like everyone forces their voice to sound like that because it’s what it take to be the next best thing in the industry.

What annoys me about demi is when she does that large run and she loses volume on the lows, its really annoying to me. She does it on Stone Cold and TMYLM. Oh and also in Get back.

I don't want to be that person but... first 😏 Edit: *Mariah's* vocal ability & musicality has really been saving the day on a number of occasions👑 *Ariana Grande* That's how you dodge a note 🌟 (to be honest I think it's probably the arrangement of some of these notes eg. "Everyday" that makes it difficult. Because she has hit higher falsetto notes with ease; it's reminiscent of Celine's F5 in "All By Myself" even though she has F5's in other songs with way more ease & support. I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion but *Demi Lovato* sounds her best in Pop/Rock. I know that *Christina* has a few sloppy moments when it comes to riffs and runs, but it doesn't sound as unnatural as some other vocalists/singers. I'm glad that *Liz* called out that style of singing and even dubbed it "Seal Singing"; it's great that it's coming from her because she is an impressive singer! Pop Singers who have given incredible renditions of classical songs (those that come to mind): Nicole Scherzinger, Leona Lewis

Honestly same, I can't stand when pop singers sing "opera", they'd sing in the same style just with an orchestra, it's kinda humiliating and degrading to the art

2:10 is one of my favorite perfomances of Ari, This was on her bday in 2016 and she had just gotten her hair that color so she was feeling all sorts of Confident and we love a Confident Queen!

I do love a slow, rolling vibrato, but I think it doesn't fit with all types of music or songs. On the other hand, I won't say anything about riffs and runs. Lord knows I can't really do them.

Your pet peeves are correct. As mentioned in another comment, dodging is not the problem but bad dodging non musical dodging. Also, when non classical singer try operatic musix I really don't like even if they sound good, it's disrespectful, opera singing is very difficult and requires a loooong training, please if you sing non classical music don't try and attempt operatic style. By the way rita ora singing classical music, what the hell?

The seal singing to me just makes me think they tryna cover up the fact they can’t sing by changing pronunciation, so I automatically write off those ppl as non-singers. I also feel like u tryna be fake “exotic” which just strikes me as a person who’s trying to be cool by posing as a different nationality.....all very distasteful for me. .... I learned something from this video I never thought about how bad slow vibrato can sound till u pointed it out. Lol

Love Demi, but she is not consistently agile enough to pull off the things she tries to pull. Same with Camila. And you're right, it's worse to do a sloppy run that to just sing it straight. Another pet peeve for me is putting on a baby voice or placing your tone drastically higher (or lower) than its natural placement. Note on the slow vibrato - it's not even the speed that annoys me - take for example debut Leona Lewis, her vibrato was stunning but also at times she slowed it down for emotive effect, and it worked so well. Then look at Jessica Simpson (great example in other pop vids especially) or even Fergie, it is how wide their vibrato gets. It oscillates almost a semitone to the point that it sounds super cheesy and has a Cabaret, musical theatre vibe, when it's supposed to be a pop song. Nice video!

Demi was sick in that Confident performance, she had difficulties to sing live which is why she lowered the key,but yea it was still awkward for the pause,I understand.

My theory is slow vibrato is people who do not naturally have vibrato in their voice. They do slow vibrato. Don't know why they force it. A voice does not have to have vibrato to be lovely

I've seen a lot of people in this comments' section bashing Demi. It's not like the others don't have flaws either. One of them said "Demi's lower register is non-existent" (that is a wonderful display of something called ignorance). And their vocal agility has improved so much (even someone with amazing vocal agility, like JoJo, would have a hard time trying the run in the pre-chorus of Demi's song 'You don't do it for me anymore', but Demi almost always nails it)

I agree with everything except for one example of slow vibrato. Her vibrato in the video sounds healthy and evenly spaced. No matter how hard you try, if you are producing vibrato the wrong way, you cannot produce it to sound evenly spaced. What’s doesn’t sound good to me is shallow sounding uneven vibrato.

I think it is easy to judge when you have not been in that position Where your Voice was working and then wasn’t. A lot of singers have the ability to adlib or improvise. You need agility and mainly knowledge of your instrument to be able to do it.

I agree w the seal singing one COMPLETELY that video of Halsey in that mall haunts me. But I do think it can be done right (tho very rarely)

4:31 on the contrary, slow vibrato is actually really nice to listen to😚WHEN IT'S DONE RIGHT. A good example of someone to listen to is Ari lennox or sometimes sia and that other woman whose name I keep forgetting who has a similar accent as sia. Slow vibrato shouldn't be confused with tremelo which is what is happening at 4:45 throughout. That last one at 5:00 is pure slow good vibrato 😚 Can I also add that vibrato is something you don't think about, unless you take it into consideration. That's why we have singers who have straight tone and singers who have vibrato. Great video btw 🔥 I'm a fan of your videos now 👏

I am a nit picker when it comes to singing. I have been a fan of Demi for many years, and the perfect-ish performances that I could found can be counted on one hand. Sloppy runs, unstable vibrato, and struggles with head voice are what always put me off. I hope she doesn’t see herself as a great vocalist because that’s a terrible mentality. There is always room for improvement. She can easily afford top class vocal teachers. She had so much time to practice during this pandemic. Hopefully she takes her voice seriously and always improves it.

Ima be honest I'm annoyed with slow and lazy sounding vibrato but I also don't like the super fast one cuz idk they sound so shaky and unnatural or just not good to ears for me. I would like a round, even and neatral speed vibrato like Whitney's, Mariah, Morissette amon, perrie and Celine Dion.

Bad vibrato would be variance in amplitude instead of a pitch (tremolo), or a very slow and wide variance in pitch (wobble).

I'd rather an artist dodge rather than screech a note and it sound horrible tbh

I think I like slower and deep vibrato as long they're even. I couldn't appreciate very fast vibratos and uneven ones, they sound kinda unhealthy for me especially uneven ones.

Just cause we have pet peeves, doesn't mean singers should change their style (as long as it's technically correct, of course) Some people simply can't change their voices. It's impossible. They can only learn how to use it properly and do their best. They still nail it

I agree with the untrained singers leaving classical music alone. I remember when Beyonce did the Pespi "Habanera" commercial and ppl where like O MY GOD BEYONCE CAN SING OPERA! All I could do was roll my eyes.
