Part (4) of many. In this video we open the case! This engine came out of my 1972 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia that has been sitting outside in the elements for a long long time. 15 to 20 years maybe more....
I owned a 70's KG. years ago. Had an auto clutch which I didn't like. Had it converted to regular clutch. I have never worked on cars. Now I understand why they are expensive to repair. I'm surprised with all the parts and tolerances required that cars run as well as they do. This is fun to watch. Thanks. I'm binge watching.
I love the AE case VW engine. That's how I started my career in this business. That was 37 years ago. Dude, clean it, replace pistons, barrels, line bore the case, threadsert the case, new bearings, flush or replace the oil cooler, replace the oil pump, new push rod tubes. The cam and crank actually look good. But have a machinist check the journals.
Thank you so much.! I have a “beetle 1974 J and 1200cc it is still running and working.Your shows will help me in the future in my car.In my country there are I think only 10 beetles and I have a problem with parts of the beetle. Pre-war there are a lot in Kosova but nowdays there are a few.I’m an English teacher and I’m half serviser in my home. If you ask me why am I a half serviser because there isn’t any beetle serviser and no parts.Beetle is my lovely car andits my passion.Thank you again for your shows.!!
First rule of rebuilding a VW engine is BEFORE you disassemble you retorque the nuts on the head studs to 35 ft pounds. (OEM spec is like 27) What this does is assure you that none of the studs pulls out during final assembly. If they do pull out you can get oversized studs or self-tap over size but both will put aluminum fragments into the crankcase so you want to handle this early in the game. Whant to get all of that crap out of the inside? First use a degreaser then spray with oven cleaner and let soak for several hours before hitting it with a garden hose. Basically a DIY hot tank to get the black crud off.
And don't forget the heads. Have a machine shop do a valve job on them. Go back together with specs and a torque wrench. Have fun. Good gasket sealer, these things are leakers
I hear that, probably better off running new lifters. I did as well. I used a Rubbermaid container , with purple Power and some good scrub brushes. Scrub the shit out of her! Lol.. Its a huge labor of 💘
Nothing yet. I just cleaned the garage yesterday because the weather finally started to cool off a bit. I still have to clean the case and heads. The weather should be nice all week so maybe an hour or so after work and it should be good to go.
Existe um sacador para a bomba de óleo , retira a muito fácil ou Força um pouco como se fosse abrir o bloco ...folga a bomba sai com a mao. Mas trabalhar em casa vale tudo !
The only way to make a real hot rod out of any guia is with a subaru or a used porche engine....i've seen the outcome first hand...and they just fly...cheers!
Yes, the motor is good. I took the case and heads to a local vw shop and they said it should be fine to rebuild. Just need to clean it up a bit. Thanks for asking Jason!
If you did a video of rebuilding this engine I couldn't find it. All I found about it was the Jan 1 "update" that said you would make one of it. Did I miss it somewhere?
Hi @@CTmoog After 3x Beetles, one split screen bus a Karmann Ghia, Porsche 912 and 2x 356 Porsches, much sweat and bruised knuckles later I realised these are bulletproof motors. Sadly I sold all of these. Thank you for posting. BTW those small plates under the cylinders are essential for cooling.
Hey G! Yes, it's weird but that's how they designed it! It has a oil screen and it somehow filters out the junk and keeps it at the bottom. Thanks for watching! Did you subscribe?
@@CTmoog The screen works very well if kept clean and the oil changed. Regular valve adjustments and the VW motor will last very well for many miles. Correctly maintained there isn't much to go wrong except the belt.
4 videos later we have an engine junk yard... And no sign of parts 5, 6, 99, or indeed anything resembling a running motor.. Shall I look in eBay under failed restorations? Just in case you are wondering, there is one thing worse than a motor needing restoration.. one like THIS! Never buy!
