I’m very surprised I haven’t killed it yet the amount of mistakes I have made working on it, I didn’t even maintain it all that well for the first few years of ownership because I expected it to break at some point.
Another fantastic step by step video. I felt your pain with replacing the camshaft oil seal & having to take off the vacuum pump to gain access to the camshaft locking pin slot, i had to do the exact same thing on my sons S60 D5. Keep up the good work 👍
I had no idea it was required when I started the job but I suppose I’m getting pretty numb to these surprises by now, especially after removing the entire dashboard just for the matrix. I’m glad it took out the possibility of me messing up the timing though. Thanks for the comment Mark, much appreciated!
Very kind Jonny, thank you. I got ripped off by garages when I was 17/18 so I started doing everything I could myself and thankfully found a very good garage (Motech in Goole) who have taught me most of what I now know.
Wow. Super! Great quality capture of even the smallest details. The vacuum pump is a known problem on these engines, even a new gasket doesn't always help, you have to use some sealant. Oil leakage can be not only because of an old oil seal, but also because of dried up sealant on the crankshaft covers ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AjWWx2r42Ss.html (anaerobic sealant there that dries out over time). 322,000 miles is a great number! Well done for doing it yourself, huge respect!
Well, not many people know there is another thing behind. There is the one-way valve that guides the vacuum from brake booster to vacuum pump. It has been leaking at mine, and just stopped when I had to replace the brake booster and the valve, as precaution. Despite of installing new seal on the pump it was still leaking and stopped just after brake booster replacement.
Thank you! I seem to have managed to eliminate all leaks now. I have since done the rear crank seal while doing a 6 speed conversion so underneath my car is now dry 😁 coming up to 325k now 👍
Thank you for your amazing work! Do you also have a video on how to change the valve lifters/hydros on the Volvo D5? I'm not sure how to properly reinstall the camshafts.
Great video, I've currently got the head off my xc90 d5, I can see you didn't but I've read loads of posts about when you've removed the cam sprocket you need to fit the belt with the sprocket loose then also need to scribe a new timing mark on sprocket, this sounds over complicated to me, I like the way you do it
So I reassembled my oil pump and there seems to be no clearance when you tighten it down between the housings and the gears when you sandwich them together. It makes it difficult to turn. Originally thought it was because it had medal shavings inside but seems the same after reassembly. Any advice on this?
Shame these Engines dont have an oil pressure sensor, only a switch. I would monitor the oil pressure with a proper gauge though before doing anything to the engine.
It was worth doing as I was doing the seals anyway. I know they’re not prone to failure but it’s good to know. I ended up using 5w40 oil instead and that has improved it.
It’s on the to do list 👍 oil pump doesn’t appear to have made any difference to oil pressure light duration but I have since realised my 180k XC90 is exactly the same.
I wouldn't replace the oil pump for a 4 second delay, My 242K miles D5 is the same, I use good quality oil in mine, If you are super concerned start using Ester based engine oil! I bet the new oil pump made little difference, If there is any wear at that mileage it will be in the crankshaft and mains.
@@IAMASPANNER It will mate, I use 5w40 shell helix ultra in mine and at 242K miles it uses no oil! I use Shell because of the decent base oils they use, Cheaper oil brands not so IMO.
Oil pressure light staying on for 4 seconds at startup got me worried. Changing the oil pump didn’t do anything. I now use 5w40 oil and it’s down to 2 seconds which is more normal.
Never encourage people to refit a cam belt, even if it was new last week! You openly admit it's done over 20k, why take that risk, you spent £300 but you want to save......... what??? Different subject, why is the volume recorded so very low, all other vids don't seem to have similar problems. UK Pete.
I personally don’t have any issue refitting a belt that’s only done 20k in probably 12 months, I’d change it if it were a few years old. I’m not sure what the issue with volume is, possibly my editing software, you’re not the first comment so I’ll have a look into it.
@@IAMASPANNER thanks for your response Tolly, we will have to agree to disagree about the belt. I watched your video again and genuinely believe it's recorded at a low level, you're the expert on the subject so I'll leave it to you. V70 D5 and C70 T5 I'm a 78 year old Volvo freak!
@@petebrown6952 I’m on top of the maintenance now pretty much so it won’t be long before it gets another belt. I’ll pay more attention to the next video and see if there’s something I can do about the sound recording. Thanks for watching and commenting!
