DISCLAIMER: DO NOT do this if you aren't sure this is appropriate to your situation, or if you haven't recently replaced your battery (or batteries). If you have replaced your battery (or both, there are 2 in this car) and the start/stop won't work, then this might be for you.
Volvo Drive-E Start Stop Not Working. Do you have a Volvo with Drive E and the start/stop isn't working? Have you even replaced the battery, and it's STILL not working? I have 2 things to share that might help. One is a reset procedure that will cause the car to basically forget the battery conditioning information and re-learn the battery charge level, the ability of the battery to hold a charge, charge rate, discharge rate, yada yada. The other is a little secret that these cars have I didn't even know myself. You'll have to watch to find out what it is.
1 - Ignition ON (engine off)
2 - dipped front lights ON (turn light switch to far right)
3 - Rear fog lights press 6x (3 on/off cycles) (button to left of light switch)
4 - Hazzard lights press 3x
- Battery icon blinks 3x
Walk away, lock car, let it sit overnight

Hello Floyd, It's so good to see persons like you, interested in helping others with some car problems. Machines are machines...! right? This is a brief description about how the Volvo Start Stop system works, in big steps: -1st engine start of the morning= Only Main battery is used to turn engine and power everything at the same time (Big Battery visible in engine compartment). Small Support battery not needed. -Car comes to first stop and engine is stopped by S/S system= Main Battery runs all electric consumers in car. (NOT support Battery). -1st S/S start in driving cycle= as brake pedal is lifting, the Main S/S relay box (under cowl) will switch momentarily, all electrical consumers to the small Support battery (under the cowl) and it uses the big Main battery solely to start engine (This is because you want to use the most powerful battery to run the engine starter motor). -As soon as the engine restarts (like in milliseconds) all electrical consumers are switched back to the Main Battery for normal running until the next S/S cycle and so on and the small Support battery is disconnected. The small Support battery is ONLY used those very few milliseconds while the engine restarts from a S/S cycle. During normal driving, this Support battery is just idling waiting for the next start cycle. Conditions like: Climate A/C, Ambient temperatures, Charging system status, batteries State Of Charge levels, might prevent the system from working. Both Main and Support batteries, must have a SOC at least around 72% to be Ok. I hope this bring some more understanding to how the Start/Stop system works. Greetings, Ben

Hi Ben! Thank you for the detailed information! You caught me just in time, I was about to enroll into a S/S course. 😂 Question: To reset how many seconds for each function? As my dash showed, none of the indicators that Floyd mentioned. Thanks again, Jean

@@jdykes1381 Hi J. There is no reset function for this system. Both batteries are monitor by CEM (central electronic computer) for state of charge and state of health, continuously. If one fails, the system becomes disable and the message to driver states that S/Stop system is unavailable due to electrical system fault. Once you diagnose which battery is bad and replace it, you have to use VIDA (Volvos diagnose application that all Volvo dealers have) and reset the counters for the battery life, in other words you tell the CEM that the main battery is now new. The small battery does not have this counter. So, determine which of the 2 batteries is at fault if not both and replace them with the Volvo spec and brand (they are better and yes more expensive) and have the counters reset. The system will Aldo sense that the state of charge and state of health on both bats is now within the specs. Saludos.

@@jdykes1381 Hi J. Maybe the problem is deeper, outbid your scope. Not knowing the condition of the auxiliary condition, remember that there are more components involved in the system like the start stop relay box, BMS sensor attached to negative main battery cable (you can try if you haven’t, disconnect negative cable and then small wires connector from bms and leave it disconnected for about 10 minutes)see if that helps you. Are you a technician or do it yourself? Otherwise you might consider taking your car to the dealership.

Thank you. Hopefully it keeps working. The battery management system in these cars is trash. It will only charge the primary battery in my car to 12.2 volts and the system wants it it to be 12.4 volts or something like that to work properly. I will have to see if there is a software update for mine. Love my Volvo, but hate their implementation of the start/stop and charging system.

Finally it brewed for nearly 24hrs and the first set of lights I stopped at gave me a proper start/stop effect. Nothing changed in radio/ac/lights it just seems like it's still on other than rather noticeable start and 0 RPM on rev counterand the announcement on thee dash. Just picked up on your video which is very good, you're correct on the BMS but slightly incorrect on the two batteries locations for European Volvos, also the hidden battery on your car is the booster start/stop battery, the one in the engine bay is your main auxiliary battery, it takes a boost from the hidden battery. With European cars the main battery is located in the engine bay just like yours , however the booster start /stop battery is located behind the front bumper hidden down low on the passenger side wheel arch, an absolute nightmare to change, as the whole front bumper must be removed to access the booster start/ stop battery , it is the ONLY way to get access to the start/stop booster battery, many owners this side of the pond have spent ages removing the inner wheel arch thinking theres access to the battery only to find theres no access, the whole front bumper must come off. Whoever at Volvo designed this on the European model needs sacking !!!!!! Also any time after changing any of the batteries or doing a charge the BMS should be reset and the car left standing for a good 12 hours or so.

My understanding is that the small battery is used to keep the a/c, radio and the like going when the stop/start is in a stop situation. That way you are not draining the large battery used as a normal battery. Think of it as if it is a boat. You have what they call a crank battery to start up your boat. Then, you have a different battery called a “house” battery. That one is used to run the “house” electronics (a/c, fridge, stove, light etc.). That way if you drain the “house” battery, the “crank” battery will be there to start the boat motor and not leave you stranded. Each battery is designed differently. One needs the Big Bang to turn the engine while the other needs to accommodate the smaller power required for the radio etc.. You will notice that when the car stops, at a red light, the A/C will be reduced temporarily. All part of the plan to reduce the power required to fire up the engine again.

Hi Floyd, here's my little saga, I bought a 2013 RHD V70 2.0ltr D3 about 5 months ago, the family run garage gave me a 3 months warranty which is normal for a car of this age here in the UK, near the end of the 3 months warranty the stop start stopped working, so back to the garage it went, they replaced the main battery FOC with a genuine Volvo one, no problem with the garage at all, although recently the stop start had stopped working again (now out of warranty) they were good enough to check the new battery and it was fine if a little low on power, they recharged it and everything worked, happy once again, now it has happened again, seeing your video I phoned the garage the garage and told them about the second hidden battery, I had to laugh when they said they wished they had known about this also, as the battery they changed in the first place did not seem to bad but the new Volvo one they fitted solved the problem although it was expensive, and the second battery was only a fraction of the cost of the main one, when they checked with Volvo, they agreed with me that this was probably the problem all along, and would change it for me but would have to charge this time, I thanked them but declined as the job looks within my capabilities and I would do it myself, so thankyou for this information as like you I would never had known of this secret battery, I know one thing though I will use this garage again when I buy another car, as they bent over backwards to keep me happy, a genuine honest dealer is hard to find nowadays.

I have a volvo XC60 2015.5 SUV and I live in Southern CA, USA. had low battery message for ever. I was not able to open the trunk through the button on the trunk door (I used the key fob or dashboard button to open it) Many times the close button did not work unless I turn the car on first (that is the only way to close the trunk properly). found your video and loved it (Thank you so much Floyd). Followed the process of changing the battery from Amazon, After all of that the low battery message did not go away and the trunk did not close unless I start the engine. The Start/Stop certainly did not work. I did a battery rest, few differences from your video: I pushed the start until the dashboard lit and I noticed the battery sign on it. I must have pushed it for 2 seconds or more. I preformed the 6x3 in a fast order Turned off the car, but the hazard lights kept flashing. I was worried that the hazard lights maybe adding to the problem. Came back and read the comments on this video and it seemed to indicate that the hazard lights should not be flashing So I thought that I messed up somewhere. By then it was over 30 minutes since the reset. I went and turned the hazard lights off and drove the car for 5 minutes and to my shock the start/stop was working. Now the open and close trunk buttons are also working. I will provide an update if this change. At least now I know that the car has fog lights and battery indicator on the dashboard (LOL) I am so grateful for your video and feel indebted and I hope that this long rambling post will help others as a pay back. Now if only you can help me with the check engine light indicating PO420 error message (Catalytic Converter). Dealer quoted me $3000. Thanks again

Thx for sharing the info! I will just leave the drive e start-stop function alone. Normally will turn it off. Is alr proven this thing is a “green/fuel saving gimmick” will actually make your starter wear out faster, frequently start stop will actually wear out the engine too.
@FloydNashFixItDad
@FloydNashFixItDad 3 года назад
I normally just push the button so it doesn't do the start/stop also. It's annoying at times. It won't cause the engine to wear faster though. That's an old school thought applied to old school engines. Even I have a hard time not thinking that way, but the modern engines have higher tolerances and better materials so that the start/stop doesn't cause wear. Think about the Prius. The engine in that is starting and stopping all the time and those things barely need their first service at a quarter million miles.

I got the main battery in my 2016 Volvo V40 T4 with 2 liter Drive E engine, checked and it was less than 70% of rated capacity. The start/stop function had also quit. So I put a new main battery in, but the stop/start function still did not work. So I changed the secondary and via a scan tool “told” the cars computer that a new secondary battery has been installed. The stop/start function then worked. On the V40 model that 2nd battery is located just ahead of the left front wheel and the front bumper bar has to be removed to access it. There are other You Tube videos detailing the procedure on that model, but most are in German or Swedish. However a picture is worth a 1000 words and it’s not that hard...just time consuming. 😉

I love my Volvo's but if they keep making it this hard to work on simple things like this, I may have to stay with just the older models, or look at another car. Removing the bumper bar to replace a battery just sounds beyond ridiculous. This from a company that can design a way to remove the headlights in 30 seconds by pulling 2 pins.
@Bellakelpie
@Bellakelpie 3 года назад
@@FloydNashFixItDad The bumper bar on the later V40, S60, V60, is held on by plastic fasteners which are unlocked with a screwdriver. I enlisted help to get the one on my car off, simply because of the length of the bar, but it can be done by 1 person if a stool is positioned in the middle to support it when it comes off. 😉 After studying a You Tube video (narrated in German ) a few times first, it took us about 10 minutes to get the bar off. Next time will be quicker, now that I have done it before. Both batteries MUST be of the Glass Fibre Mat /VLRA type, which I have to buy from a specialist battery shop, rather than the local general auto parts store. They have a lifespan of about 4 years so I will just change them every 48 months. What I find annoying though, is the lack of information supplied to modern Volvo owners, about what servicing needs to be done at what time interval or mileage. My cars owners manual is in E-Book form and contains very little servicing details. I had to pry the information out of the dealer. I do agree with your comment about the older models or changing brands. Not wishing to risk owning a Volvo from the Ford ownership era, we recently bit the bullet and bought a Kia Forte GT, which has every feature our Volvo V40 has in it and is a lot simpler to service. And it only has 1 battery! 🤣

@FloydNashFixItDad 3 года назад
I'm not totally sure but have a couple of ideas. Could just be the battery in the key FOB even though it activates the locks. If you have a 2nd set of keys, try the other set. It that's not it, then it could be the battery is just drained too low to activate certain systems, like the proximity sensor for the key. These cars do strange things when the battery is low. Most European cars are the same way actually. I think you battery is in the same spot as my car. Under the hood, to the right of the engine cover, on the back wall is a cover for the battery. Remove it. You need to get a charger of some sort, even if you can only get the cheapo Harbor Freight battery tender. The small ones will need 8-10 hours to work, larger ones may be fine after an hour, maybe 2. Connect the positive terminal (red) on the charger to the + side of the battery. The negative (black) terminal on the charger should go to a metal part of the engine. There should be a metal engine bracket just to the left of the battery box you can clamp to. The charger will indicate it's in charge mode if it's a good spot. Let it sit, and give it a try later and see if that does the trick.

the reason for the second battery is to protect the computers within the car from voltage drop when the main (starting) battery cranks the engine. it's very normal for a start battery to drop in voltage to something around 8.5 volts when it's supplying 600+ amps to the starter. if you don't have the second battery in the system and the main battery (and cable connection) aren't in perfect shape then you run the risk of having computers drop out and reset and sometimes even lose their settings and or be damaged.

Glad I could help. Those torx bolts in the rear parking brake motor are not the greatest design. If they get stuck, they can be really hard to remove. One thing I've heard that you can do, is to take a 9 volt battery and a couple of wire leads, like maybe from just the little power clip you would normally plug a 9 volt battery into, and use that battery to wind the motor to it's maximum retracted position. If a 9 volt won't work, then a 12 volt from a power drill or similar device would work. If you connect the wires one way and it seems to tighten it, just reverse the wires to go the other way.

@FloydNashFixItDad
@FloydNashFixItDad 2 года назад
Yes, but not all cars will have this reset procedure apparently. It may be only for those with the start/stop feature or certain years. If this doesn't work, what you can try is to start the car, remove the battery cover so you can get to the negative terminal (you could do this before starting the car). On the negative terminal, you will see a small plug where you can press a tab and disconnect it. Do that. This is the battery monitor sensor. Leave it off about 15 seconds, then plug it back in. This can also be used to reset the BMS for those cars that won't use the other reset procedure.

Hi Floyd, thanks for the vdo, managed to reset after change both battery. Prior change the batteries had weird symptom of car electrical shut down unexpectedly. At the w/shop confirmed batteries capacitance had dropped. But after changed batteries this “blackout” still happened especially after you parked and stop the engine. I need to open the battery compartment and wriggle some cables connected to the battery (the cables to the battery terminals are tight btw)and voila! The electrical power is back. The OBD not able to detect any fault code. Btw, This trouble is intermittent. Any opinions?

Check all the cable ends to make sure they are clean. Corrosion can cause issues like this. Make sure the end is connected securely to the wire. Follow it to the other end where possible and make sure that end is connected securely also. Sounds like a wiring issue.

Floyd, how did you determine in your situation it was the main battery and not the support battery? Thanks
@FloydNashFixItDad
@FloydNashFixItDad 3 года назад
To be honest, I wasn't totally sure. I didn't know about the existence of the support battery until after I replaced the main battery. It did show symptoms of main battery though. If I shut off the engine and sat in the car to finish listening to a song, it would shut down with a battery low message within a couple of minutes. It would be best to have it load tested to be sure though, and the support battery is cheap enough, it's not a horrible idea to just replace them both at once too.
@costimax55
@costimax55 3 года назад
Thank you Floyd. I used a battery conductance tester and tested both batteries, main battery has only 42% life left (with that life percentage the tester said “replace”), the support battery test came back even worse than the main one. So, both of them need to be replaced. Yesterday I was listening only 2-3 min to some music with the engine shut off and I got a “low battery charge” message right away. Second fact, I did charge the main battery 3 weeks ago, Start/Stop worked 2-3 days only, also taking into consideration that my S60 was manufactured in 2015, same as yours, there is no surprise that the batteries needs to be replaced.

Hey Floyd, I have done the BMS reset you show at the beginning of the video, but have since learned you’re only supposed to do this if you install a new battery. Otherwise your car will think you have a new battery and treat your old battery as such. Is there any danger driving like this or something that can be done to revert the BMS reset?
@FloydNashFixItDad
@FloydNashFixItDad Год назад
You can't "undo" the reset. This basically just tells the car that a change MAY have occurred to the battery, and it will go re-test it to see what it's charge and discharge capabilities are. There's no danger to doing that. It just helps it re-learn the condition of the battery.
@milanmatlak647
@milanmatlak647 3 года назад
The presence and location of the support battery is described in every car's user manual. At least in my Volvo XC60 manual (2017). That was not the secret for me. The secret for me was the magic procedure to reset BMS without VIDA, which might be easier to do than disconect BMS sensor from battery for 10 seconds while ignition is on. Btw. regarding the MBS reset procedure, shouldn't I press the start button without break for longer period to get in to ignition on position II instead of pressing the button shortly to get into position I? Or does it really matter?
@FloydNashFixItDad

I edited the video description to include a copy of the instructions in writing if that helps. Just follow those and it should work. The BMS disconnect doesn't force a complete relearn procedure like the battery reset does.

I'm not an AC expert, but I can guess either the compressor isn't engaging, or there is a leak in your system and the refrigerant may have leaked out. Check your fuses and relays and make sure the electrical connector on the compressor has the plug inserted properly. Maybe it's just something simple. If you're not sure, then you'll probably have to take it to a shop specializing in automotive air conditioning to see what's happening.

Retry it a couple of times to make sure you got it right. If that doesn't work, then one of your batteries is probably bad. You may have to have the batteries tested to see if they can still hold a proper charge. You may be able to take it to a shop that has the Volvo specific diagnostics software, and it should be able to tell you the battery life and charge capacity also. According to the European V40 forums, the procedure is below. Looks like the only difference is you press the rear fog light button 5 times. Alternately, you could take it to a shop that works on Volvo cars, and they can use a programming device to perform the reset. For a reset of the BMS: 1. Switch on ignition (do not start engine) 2. Switch on dipped beam 3. Press 5x the rear fog light button (do not switch 5x on and off the rear fog light) 4. Press 3x hazard lights button (do not switch 3x on and off hazard lights) 5. Hi Sam, I'm not a Volvo tech, just an owner like you but have a couple of guesses from what I've read. I've seen on a lot of Volvo forums that some have issues with the steering column lock but that seems to be on pre-2009 cars I think. Not totally sure. Maybe jiggle the drive selector to make sure it's in park, or wiggle the steering wheel nice and strong a couple of times to see if it just isn't at some steering angle the electronics don't like. If you were having issues with start stop, then this, there could be some bigger issue going on too.
