Internet publishing might take a book out of the music industry. e.g. having an organisation like the PRS handling payments for music played on the radio and in live venues and feeding it back to artists

I wonder what the focal distance is in the Somnium VR1, and if this could be a contributing factor to the issue David had with it? I remember a subtle feeling similar to what David describes when first going into the Pimax Crystal (although to Ian’s point, my eyes seemed to accommodate to this after a few play sessions), and that headset has a relatively short focal distance of 1m.

Immersed Visor is an exciting device. If they are outside the Meta platform though I worry about how they will manage the social element.

We plan to try it in September: www.uploadvr.com/immersed-visor-public-demos-set-for-september/

They are not aiming to do much more than screen replacement. Though I do believe Immersed has its own conferencing capability. That said, yes a Horizon version of the Visor would be amazing (though unlikely)

Ian hit it on the head pointing out that an all day event allowing only a 10-20 minute demo of the actual headset is a red flag. The Somnium VR1 prototypes were reported as being unbearably uncomfortable to wear for long periods. The claim is that Somnium has fixed this in the final, yet they're carefully keeping anyone from wearing it long enough to tell... and then selling this $4000 headset with a no refunds policy.

"does anyone care about the Upload business model?" This guy writes this comment 10 days after publishing a long article explaining his own business model. You can't make this shit up. I don't understand the need to be mean to people who support you 🤦‍♂️

Somnium vr 1 is just too expensive for what it is, even if the visuals are fixed. FOV is not worth that much money over say a pimax light. Its too little too late for the price. Maybe for a very niche sim crowd.

I again reaffirm praise for meta and their open AI stance. All the issues Ian has with VR would be exacerbated with just closed models available. AI has downsides but there is no stopping AI short of worldwide societal collapse from nuclear war or asteroid strike etc. Given this the fact that someone is providing a truly open AI is a real boon to society.

I can't see HTC releasing this headset without high resolution and pancake lenses, fresnel now on a high end headset makes no sense.

bit of poor vision into the future at 28:50 by those few chatters, definitely can see if not with VR but with future ar raybans where two people in the same space (or remote) can pick one of the virtual screens / browser tabs / photo&vid to move from a private space onto a shared space for both to interact with, which would be far better than a tablet or phone. Also, i disagree with David on Meta not intentionally leaking, but understand he's a evidence man and we dont have any real evidence they leaked on purpose. But every leak we were getting it has been the final product. The amount of youtubers with speculative videos around it was incredible which i think no amount of advertising could match. The leaks would've been grainy or poor on purpose to give the leak legitimacy, so ya i think thats just an invalid excuse. Like beside the comedic hotel leaks, there is just no way Zuckerberg with the galsses a few days ago & Bosworth with the 3s could accidentally leak these. They are just building up hype for the coming Meta connect, cause no one in their right mind (beside VR enthusiasts) would watch a Facebook event. I do think they are getting diminishing returns now at this stage with all the leaks though, but that might be down to the products themselves as they are not that advantageous compared to Q2 & QPro leaks. Great show as usual lads.

Bigscreen Beyond, is still the only VR headset that I like the look of. These white bricks, don't do it for me. I like the Quest 3, but it looks ugly and is too heavy and uncomfortable. Can't see mass adoption happening until a small and comfortable headset is made.

@sharpvidtube _PS maybe I'm overly defensive of the Q3 by saying this as it's you haven't ridiculed the Q3 and it's likely I don't need to say it..._ Hi sharp, for sure the form factor of the bigscreen beyond is great but it achieves that by excluding many components in to Q3, even Q2, or the Index and so explains why it's so small. Yes, it'll be great when we get to a Q3/vision Pro the size of the Bigscreen but it seems that's a fair way off. Fyi, while it doesn't help aesthetics, I have cable tied a 20k mAH battery pack (power delivery protocol 9v 2A) to the back of my Q3 standard strap and it does a wonderful job of compensating for the headset weight on the front of the headset. It is so much better that if I put the headset on without that improved balance it feels quite uncomfortable -but that's because I'm used to the better balance. I too look forward to the time when I don't need to put an extra weight, though functional, at the back of the headset.

@@frankjonestba When you say "excluding many components", you mean standalone components. The Bigscreen Beyond is a fully functional PCVR headset... miniaturized. Characterizing the Beyond as only small because it's a "cut down" headset is misleading. It does what the Index does in a drastically smaller package. The Index doesn't have standalone components either. Why does this suddenly make a PCVR headset not count as a "full headset" only when it's small?
@frankjonestba
@frankjonestba Месяц назад
@@SargonDragon Fair point. But PCVR, when talking about weight, also has the weight of the PC. PCVR is not relevant to most people. I don't know the data but I am pretty sure that these days standalone totally dominates the market. All of that said, I recognise that discussion weight is a deviation of the original point... I guess, for me it is somewhat of an issue of what a "headSET" is. I recognise that VR is still somewhat niche/fledgling and so terminology isn't very concrete. For audio, "headset" refers to a COMPLETE SET of full duplex audio speaker and mic system, NOT including the supply (music supply device). VR, in my mind COMPLETE SET requires full duplex audio, visual, and tracking (no standalone requirement). Sure, bigscreen has the visual but it's audio is lacking: 2 mics but is missing speakers. It also doesn't have the third requirement for VR -tracking. Bigscreen Beyond does not have the necessary third, Tracking hands or 6DOF or even 3DOF. So, it seems to me that the term "headSET" could be a misnomer for BB as without the basic requirements of being a VR headset then it isn't one. It seems a more suitable term could be "visor (other suggestions) with 2 mics. Realistically, it's has great quality screens that somewhat randomly has mics but no speakers. Yes, it's a fantastic niche product, but not a "headSET". I'm open to be corrected. I appreciate, while I made a considered response, that I could be objectively incorrect and inevitably will be subjectively wrong to some. 😃

@@frankjonestba The Beyond is a "complete set" under your definition. It uses lighthouse tracking and is a 6DOF headset just like the Index. You use the Index controllers and Basestations with it. The Beyond's microphone quality is, if you can believe it, actually even better than the Index mic. The Beyond released without its audio strap, and the audio strap is sold separately for $130. It has unfortunately been delayed multiple times and is presently expected to release next month. But it's not correct to say that the Beyond doesn't have built-in speakers in its design. It does. And like the rest of the Beyond, its hard strap is much smaller and lighter than its equivalent on the Index. The difference here is just that it's sold as a separate accessory rather than coming in the main box.
