RU-vid is weird. I don't understand how this video has 664 views and only 85 likes. Give Marci a thumbs up people! There's a lot of work involved in making these videos for us so show some appreciation. 👍 Thank you again Marci. Great job figuring out the oil leak. I've never seen one go back in with such a tight fit. Is that an aftermarket dizzy?
@marcijunebug
@marcijunebug 4 года назад
Hey thanks...appreciate that! Yes it went back so tight compared to the way it was before...yes aftermarket...and the o-ring that was on it FROM the factory wasn't even close to what it should have fit like...thanks for always being here, see you on the next one!

I have two suggestions for you. First, lube the "O" ring with vasiline before instalation. Second, use the generator nut to rotate the engine while tightening and the belt will move into position without dificultity. This was how we did it at the VW dealer I worked at in the early 70's. I really enjoy watching your videos. You must love a challange as the '58 is a huge challange! Good work! See you in the next one. Dave

I used oil on the o-ring and dizzy shaft, but if have to do it again might try something else...and that pulley no matter how or what was done wasn't going on correctly, having do this many many times it was just JUNK...I usually DO rotate the alternator/generator nut and know that it is "properly" tightened if the belt slips just a bit at the compression stroke...but no big deal, had other parts and they worked great, not pretty but I just need functional! hopefully back on ole pickle the 58 this weekend! thanks for the tips and thanks so much for being here!

Another fun filled episode! I had to use the rubber mallet to put my distributor back in as well! People just put in regular "o" rings in a pinch, but the difference is obvious when you see the real o ring. Its awesome that you share your passion with your Dad! The trick with the pulley is to rotate the rear part with the locking holes or crank pulley whilst tightening the nut on the front of the alternator/generator slowly. The aftermarket ones in South Africa behave the same way :)
@marcijunebug
@marcijunebug 4 года назад
there are no locking holes on this one and it doesn't fit the shaft of itself tight, way too much slop and even if you turn it slow like I would usually do it slants all weird! JUNKO...lol back to the old stock one and it works like it should...I don't need pretty need functional, so I stuck the old one on and called it a win! haha

I remember when we called the parts from Brazil junk. Now that parts come from China, we really know what junk is. Speaking of parts from China, do not use hose clamps from Harbor Freight. They are very week. If you use them on a heater hose on a water cooled car you will strip the clamp before it is tight enough not to leak.
@marcijunebug
@marcijunebug 4 года назад
yes I know about the HF hose clamps, use them occasionally on the sailboat, with full knowledge they WILL fail, and they rust so quickly too...I don't think folks take pride in good quality parts anymore...it's sad

@@gettintheresafelywithpatf2869 It's a sad situation that we can't find almost anything made in the USA. What is made here is made from imported parts.
@gettintheresafelywithpatf2869
@gettintheresafelywithpatf2869 4 года назад
The really sad part about this situation is we priced ourselves right out of these markets between labor and value, and allowed our government to sell our jobs to overseas production! While I believe in global trading of goods, is still believe in local products and labor as a major need in our country! We need our trades and skill back hear to produce cars from local parts like before 1978, now when we look under the hood of a car, we find a bunch of parts from a as many different countries, and while each one is trying to make a buck, the importers of these parts are reaping the benefits. Think about this... it may cost $5.00 to manufacture a bolt here in America, but 3cents in China, but now we need to ship it to Mexico, to install it into a sud assembly to ship to Canada, to install into a motor that needs to be transported to Brazil to get mated up to a transmission then to Detroit to receive a local assembly of the rest of the global parts! So while the government, and big business have many people Buffaloed about local air pollution, all the shipping of these parts back and forth around the world is not helping any, if anything it is just displacing all of the pollution vs. us cleaning up our acts in manufacturing here locally in earth friendly factories!
@danielheartsill4269
@danielheartsill4269 4 года назад
@@gettintheresafelywithpatf2869 I agree fully. It looks like to me the cost of shipping would eat up any savings they have from not manufacturing ihere at home. It also looks like the government would want the tax money from products manufactured here. Taxes are part of the reason it has gone out of the country.

Hi Marci, Just a quick suggestion - haven't read others comments so this might be covered already. When installing your distributor, only tap on the shaft rather than the housing - possible to distort the shaft bushing... Also try to avoid aftermarket pulleys. I have only had bad luck with them. I rummage through the junk boxes at VW shows to find VW stamped pulleys and they are usually really cheap 😊 I don't know how hot it gets where you live, but a full size "D" crank pulley can help with cooler oil and head temps in the summer time. Also if an old VW isn't leaking a bit of oil it's empty 😄. Thanks for the video!
@marcijunebug
@marcijunebug 4 года назад
Thanks, trust me I wouldn't have been tapping on it at all if I could job done without...I do NOT like "tapping" on anything like that, so although it sounds like I'm really hitting it in the video I assure I was not lol...there is a reason for this pulley on there...had two different solid pulleys on there and had terrible luck with crank pulley seal leaking (seems you can't get good parts these days), the slotted pulley was put there so I could keep and eye one it, we did go with the standard diameter instead of one of the smaller ones...this is a full flow dual port that runs really cool compared to our other vw's we run so I don't think the temps will be an issue with it, but I keep a very close eye on is and carry an infrared temp gun with me at all times...agree with you on the oil comment! lol same is true with my 61 land rover! lol

I once had a motorcycle pipe rust through on a ride. We emptied a couple of beer cans and cut them for a patch. It held until we made it home. That was on a high heat area so it eventually burned through, but it was good enough. I think the Pepsi can on the coil is a fun touch of color. A thought for you to consider Marci . The rubber ring has been in place in the stem of the Distributor for quite some time but only seems to have leaked more and more in recent times .....Suggesting there must be something else influencing the problem ....A built up in pressure from the sump caused by sump breather issues ..... ? The oil filler cap and the breather pipe !

Rotate the engine whilst you tighten 😉 original belts never had notches in them.

yes, having put many of these on i did that with this pulley, Dad came over and said he'd get it for me...an hour later he said, "i think you are right that pulley is junk" lol It is very very difficult to get a belt these days that isn't segmented. The original belts were also made from a more "cloth" like coating on the sides...very different to the ones available now.

Hammers, or in your case, a rubber mallet, come in handy. Just a few light taps, and you're done. I just have 1 issue: a #Pepsi can coil cover on a vehicle whose colors are closer to Coke. 😃

I'm not a soda drinker myself, but had that ole can laying around and decided to do something with it! I have a COKE one somewhere and actually dad BOUGHT it for me for this very purpose but i can not for the life of me remember where I put it! It will get switched to COKE when I find it!

I wish you would have taken a picture of what it looked like when there was an engine leak because I think I might have the same issue. That's me with the VW alternator pulley: one time it goes back together easy and the next is a puzzle. I bet there is a VW alternator pulley goblin messing with it when we are not looking.
@marcijunebug

I had to finally put a camera in the engine bay while driving under a "load" to even find it...if you are seeing it pooling in the lower pulley tin area check the lower pulley seal, they are notorious for leaking...I have a sand seal in mine and have had to replace in past. That Alt pulley was absolute junk, threw it in the trash and put an old school one on, zero issues with it!

marcijunebug been there too! Getting old sucks, I still remember my father’s first drive in a very, it was my 1970 Karman ghia hard top! Now picture 2 men at 6’2” tall in this tiny car with a complete roll cage and a Porsche boxer 6 pushing it down the road! As he called it a “go cart on steroids” the complete drivetrain was Porsche, ported, polished, and rebalanced, this car would handle well, but before I had time to install the front suspension, it was sold because I was joining the Marines, and he didn’t want my 13 cars, trucks and boat hanging around untouched for 6 years. Thank you for bringing back a great memory!

funny thing, my wifes Polaris Slingshot is called a Autocycle by Mo. Motor vehicle Dept. Is a Pepsi coil hotter than a Bosch blue coil? If so I want one.
@marcijunebug
@marcijunebug 4 года назад
haha...Yeah this autocycle was only made a year or two I think, I have a copy of the magazine article where it first appeared, but not much info on the interwebs about it, would love to know more! love those SLINGSHOTS, they look like they are a blast to drive/ride. Don't know if it's hotter or not, but the color is good! lol

What did you use to clean the engine?
@marcijunebug
@marcijunebug 3 года назад
Kenneth Swain used the spray can GUNK brand engine degreaser (orange cap) for the top and then used good ole kerosene on the nuts/bolts and bottom of engine, it’s cheap and cleans well!

pretty sure they ALL leak from the gearbox! ha...how bad does it leak? check all bolts around tranny and boots? this bus leaks a bit there as well...I change the gear oil every season and keep a close eye on it,...rarely have to top it off, but it DOES drip a bit when it sits

It's not true that they are all "easy" and 4 bolts to remove a air-cooled engine. I have a fuel injected type 4 that sucker takes a while. Also my back skirt doesn't come off so I have to life the bus over it.
@marcijunebug
@marcijunebug 4 года назад
haha yea...our beetle is really tight, I have to take the generator pulley off to get it back in...but I'll tell you this...they are ALL easier than a regular engined car as they are in the rear and don't have to lift over front fenders, grill, etc...

yes I do! fortunately I live in a state where a cracked windshield isn't a problem...to replace the glass on this one I would have to build new track or buy all new safari's and they are pricey. I keep watching at swap meets hoping to find a set for decent price
