I’m not at all familiar with the VW engines, but it surprises me that so much oil can get passed the o-ring on the distributor body unless there is pressure in the crankcase. . I had that in an old MG engine resulting from pressure a blocked breather.
@marcijunebug
@marcijunebug 4 года назад
It's actually fairly common on VW's and even more so now with the less than stellar parts... the old dizzy's were rock solid, I never had one leak like this...but the the newer ones have a faulty 0-ring from the factory...this dizzy was new out of the box, I should have noticed the ring didn't fit right, but I didn't...just took it out of the box and installed...funny, wish I'd noticed because it made a big ole mess!

I know I’m going to catch flack for this, because when I comment I usually say what’s on my mind ha ha Ha. But in my opinion if I had to pull an engine out there are certain things that I would do. Because it’s easy right now since you have the engine out.. I would take the starter down. Starter?… There’s nothing wrong with the starter. Yeah I know, but this is just me. I would take the starter down, take it apart and grease the bushings. And kind of ,..clean the commutator. Then the starter will last longer. Next, anytime I have an engine out. It gets a new rear main seal. This allows you to look at your clutch, throw out bearing and end play also. The cost on a new rear main seal is about six dollars. Not a lot. Also, in my opinion you would have to have 400 pounds of oil pressure in order to get a leak out of your distributor or fuel pump. I don’t know I’m not there. And I can’t see it very well. But in my opinion there’s no way I would put that engine back in without putting new seals on your oil cooler. This particular cooler, of course has two places where it could leak. So there are two sets of seals. Even if you bought a whole new gasket set it would only be about $20. Yes you have to take the intake off. But then it gives you a chance to look at your probably oil soaked intake boots.And put new gaskets between the heads and intake pipes. Peace of mind is what we’re looking for here. At 12:50 I like to use an ordinary pencil to shove into the fuel line. Because crimping with vice grips will tear the line up. At 13:08 while you are in there I would put new transmission mounts in also. It looks like they are original. I bought a new set on rock auto for something like $12. Again, peace of mind. Changing the transmission fluid is easier now too. And it only costs… $20? Just a thought. So... I will stop now sorry..ha ,ha ha I really like the idea of your fire suppression system. That looks like it would work really well. And the miniature Beetle is over the top! Excellent job.
@snowdogs59
@snowdogs59 4 года назад
I’m with you. Having just pulled the engine out of my Syncro because the starter decided to die after reinstalling the engine following a rebuild, I’d do everything that might possibly be suspect when the engine is out.
@marcijunebug
@marcijunebug 4 года назад
well I a kind of "if it aint broke, don't fix it cause then it WILL be broke!" lol the fuel line is getting replaced...bought new.. I will show in next video why...that one is already all cut up from a faulty hose clamp...I just didn't mention that....tranny fluid was just changed in November no need to do it again...all intake boots and etc were inspected and I even took my little wifi micro camera scope down in everything and gave it a once over...all is good..keep in mind this engine is only about 5 years old...without tons of miles... you might be right on all counts...time will tell 🤔

the seal that was on the dizzy was NOT correct, a dizzy seal as you know should have the flat back and rounded out front and it should fill the slot it fits in...this one was sloppy and was just a regular 0-ring...from the factory that way, but was wrong...can't get good parts these days

You know your VW engine pretty well! From experience, recommend changing the crank pulley... The degree pulleys are okay, but they slow the cooling fan speed. On a bug not such a big deal, but on a heavy bus it can really help. Glad to see that you have the engine set up with full flow oil filter. 👍 Thanks for the video!

Hi Eric, A bus is far heavier than a bug, so engines wear quicker. I don't drive my bug or bus daily anymore, but did for years. A bus with a stock 1600 lasted me for around 60 to 70 thousand miles before coming out for rebuild. I use the stock thermostat, stock crank pulley, and counter weighted crank. Any engine above 1600 I use a dual relief case and forged pistons avoiding 009 distributors. I always full modify for full flow oil filter as well. Hope this helps. Cheers!
@TheDasbull
@TheDasbull 4 года назад
Hi Eric, I could get two rebuilds out of a 1600 case - these were used when I got them in varying conditions... This was 20+ years ago when decent used cases could be had for little money. If a case needed a line bore, I had an excellent local shop that had a "Rottler" machine dedicated to VW and Porsche machining. This shop has long since closed... A first oversize was okay, but beyond that, I wouldn't use that case for anything above stock. Mr. Berg knew his stuff 😉. If you get the chance and can afford their parts I highly recommend them! One of the main problems I have seen is poor quality cams and lifters. Any engine I build above 1600 get a matched set of lifters and cam that are resurfaced and parkerized. New cases are expensive, but I guess they are worth it in the long run today. Best of luck (we're working with really old technology 😊)
@TheDasbull

Hi Eric, We're kind of hijacking Marci's wonderful video ;) It is nice to see a young woman work on her bus and bug as well as build such a cool go kart for her son👍 I'm one of the older guys in the hobby - not as young or as able as I was years back. I still keep going though, and after working, and then hitting the shop for a few I can come in and watch Marci resurrect a '58 panel and maintain her cool double cab👍

i had the same thing on mine. if she comes out that easy its not sealing. i used to allways pull it out and sit in the bus to adjust my points then pop it back in. I had it leak oil like yours did so i put a new o ring on. i have been using the pertronix ignitor for over 20 yrs now(same unit!) so i dont need to adjust the points anymore. they work great but just incase i have another dist. all set up with points and condensor ready to got. what carb are you running a webber?
@marcijunebug
@marcijunebug 4 года назад
yes, dumb thing...been causing me grief for some time, just wasn't leaking "bad" enough to really "find" it until last few trips. And YES i love the electronic ignition but I DO carry a set of points, cond, etc ready to toss in should I need in a pinch! I'm running a dual port, progressive out of a ford pinto, its a holley...similar to the weber but not as expensive! ha

it is the weirdest of leaks...thought it was the cooler for sure...and had changed the sending unit a few months ago...pretty sure we got it this time tho!
@marcijunebug
@marcijunebug 4 года назад
yes they do, I usually do valves every 2-3K and plugs and oil once a year but don't driver them enough miles for regular overhaul...top end on the 62 beetle was done last year so it should be good for a long while and this bus engine only has been in for a little less than 5 years so with this tune up it should be good for a bit...Pickle's engine (the 58 panel bus) will be the one to watch for! I plan to do that sometime this winter!

I'm not sure of the speed...I have it as "slow" as it will go on the throttle screw...so maybe 5-10 mph? once he masters that I will give him a little more but tried to start him off without the temptation lol

Another cheap/easy thing to do is the oil sending unit. If it's not leaking now it will. Good time to replace it.
@marcijunebug
@marcijunebug 4 года назад
already did that a few months ago...they are made so poorly anymore, can't buy a "good" one...mine always leak right at the part when the metal spade clip goes into the plastic...makes a big ole mess for sure

Now that you have the engine out I would try to clean the intake manifold of the carburetor as those tubes tend to get clogged. Just try inserting some wire in and out to try to clean the interior.

Glad you found your leak, the mini bug looks 👍,just needs a mini single wheel behind it! Next year a mini double cab, and the year after a mini bus! Got to have some fun! Did you wear your skirt for the occasion today?lol , visited an old girlfriend the other day, she was pulling the heads off her 426 c.i.d. 1969 Dodge Charger, in a string bikini... some things just shouldn’t be!lol

Mine is leaking leaving the same droplets under neath. When I look at the engine is seems to be a mix of oil and water. Any suggestions?
@marcijunebug
@marcijunebug 2 года назад
well...we know there shouldn't be any water! is it gas maybe? Check pulley seal on main pulley, oil cooler seals and dizzy are the main areas for leaks, but that little plastic (brown bake-light looking piece) under fuel pump can crack with age or over tightening...is the oil checking over full or low?

better move the birds out now, you won't want to later when theres eggs in the nest. I'm sitting at the picknik table outside my shop now. I often eat breakfast/lunch here. Birds had a nest above it and there was bird poop all over the table and chairs till I hosed it off yesterday.

@@marcijunebug Sorry for the late reply. When your mounts are like that. Under load especially if you are towing something. Causes a lot of flexing equals not good. Could be the reason why the area you want to reinforce is cracking. Just saying I have owned two pickups and a crew cab. Best of luck! g

He's probably gunshy because the miniBug is a bit more valuable than a lawn tractor, and he doesn't want to wreck it. I think I'd hesitate too. Let's hope that O-ring seals the problem for a good while...I hope you bought extra, because if you have to drive 2hrs. one way to get a part, you might want to err on the side of caution.

he will get there soon enough! I bought extra of a lot of things and YES bought two o-rings figured the chance of me messing one up on install is pretty high!! lol I work about 25 miles from the place but had a few days off so wasn't up that way...its a pretty brutal trip from my house and the two main roads to get there are currently closed!

I know that feeling...years ago, I needed a new retainer clip for my Bel Air's speedometer cable, & I went to what you would now call a sketchy transmission shop/parts store, but in my case the guy wasn't sure which one would fit, so he gave me 2 different styles - looked like the jaws of a crescent w/ a mounting hole drilled in it, and one looked like you just cut the end off some flat bar & drilled a hole in it. Would you believe that was the right one? :)
