I had a flashing battery light while accelerating hard, so I decided to replace the alternator pulley. While I was at it, I replaced the serpentine belt, idler pulley, and tensioner. After this procedure, the battery light no longer illuminates while driving. Enjoy the video and I hope it helps.

To anyone trying to do this, know that finding the right tool for removing the alternator pulley is key. I found one but it didn’t have the clearance to accomplish this while still in the vehicle. Live and learn. Otherwise an easy enough job, though leaving the tensioner pin in until installed was a good move.

Great Video - Thank You! I appreciate your time in sharing this video. And good-skill with your camera techniques. For Us it was the multi-point (non-Torx) bit that fit the shaft of the alternator. This is likely due to our alternator having been previously replaced. Again Thanks, gave me confidence to do the work.

Great stuff got to do mine this week this has inspired me to do it,The front headlight complete should come out easily to get at the bottom intercooler pipe clip as it is difficult to put it back in.I know from when I did the timing belt on a previous tdi.

Does anybody know if you HAVE to take off the timing belt crap to change the accessory mount bracket for the A/C, Alternator, and Idler? My Idler portion snapped off the bracket, and need to know how hard it's going to be to change it all.😊

Nice video; 13:33, shipping purposes are the last thing they think about. It comes tensioned to ease fitting, that new spring is hard a.f. to fully compress.
@Corysdiyauto

BrapTechFun - I thought that it was easier to install without the pin. I didn't want to have to worry about it once I had the tensioner mounted. Thanks for watching!

yea i was watching this to see if the tensioner hydraulic was supposed to be free floating, guess not lol

What happens with the engine timing. Does one have to lock the position of the crankshaft, camshaft, and fuel pump prior to replacing the belt, tensioner and idler.
@Corysdiyauto
@Corysdiyauto 3 года назад
Tony Geloso - This video is only for the serpentine belt change, which doesn't affect engine timing. I think you have this confused with the timing belt change.

I replaced the tensioner and idler pulley, because the old tensioner was vibrating a lot due to a blown shock absorber (and this harmed the older idler pulley). Is it normal that the new one vibrates too? If i remember well, it wasn't vibrating a lot, like the old one, but i thought that the new would eliminate the vibrations completely. I haven't buy the belt yet, but i will do it today, just in case.
@Corysdiyauto
@Corysdiyauto 3 года назад
Rodrigo Godoy Valenzuela - The tensioner will always have some movement and that's because it's doing it's job of keeping the tension on the belt. Always replace the belt because it will stretch over time.
@yushaakadwa437
@yushaakadwa437 5 месяцев назад
Shake it! Is there suppose to be any play on the shock?
@banjoblast
@banjoblast 5 лет назад
Isn't the pin in the tensioner to be pulled out after the belt is installed?
@Corysdiyauto
@Corysdiyauto 5 лет назад
banjoblast - I chose to do it before I mounted it in the car, because it's kinda tight to work in there. It worked out just fine that way for me.

Question. I have a family member with the 1.9Tdi engine. The idler pulley bolt has sheared off level with the block. Any ideas on getting it out considering the space limitations? Thanks.
@Corysdiyauto
@Corysdiyauto 3 года назад
David Greening - Ouch! That's going to be a tough one. I don't know if you can fit a right angle drill in there or not, but I would try that. Then, drill a hole in the bolt and use an easy out tool to extract the bolt. I hope the drill will fit, but if it doesn't, then maybe you can get somebody to weld a bolt head on it so that you can break it free that way. I hope you can get it out!
@davidgreening173
@davidgreening173 3 года назад
Cory Mondics ... I Haven't inspected the job closely, but would it be possible to drill a hole in the wheel arch and expose a direct line of access to the bolt ? The car is old, and a hole could be plated over and not cause significant worry with future value.
@Corysdiyauto
@Corysdiyauto 3 года назад
@@davidgreening173 - Maybe? That's a good idea. There might be some other things in the way that may need to be removed.
@davidgreening173
@davidgreening173 3 года назад
Cory Mondics - thought you may like to know... the guy bent a welding rod into the bolt hole, applied some current and the rod attached itself to the broken bolt. Once it cooled down it was pretty much like turning and Allen key.

Why did you replace the alternator pulley does it go bad? Also I did not see any broken parts and you replaced the tensioner, idler pulley and belt also was just because you wanted everything new? When my idler pulley went bad I just replaced it like two years again???
@Corysdiyauto
@Corysdiyauto 4 года назад
KingGene - The pulley does go bad before the alternator in some cases. I replaced the idler pulley, tensioner, and belt while I was in there as preventative maintenance.

Are you sure you have to replace all the bolts? It doesn't say you have to in the manual I have
@Corysdiyauto
@Corysdiyauto 5 лет назад
linuxwave - You don't have to, but I did anyways while I was at it. They are cheap to replace and some bolts tend to "stretch" when tightened to the proper torque setting.
@linuxwave

@@Corysdiyauto Thanks for your reply. Do you still have the part numbers of these screws? I don't have kits available to buy with the screws included and the manual I have doesn't mention the parts numbers of the screws. Greetings from Germany

@@linuxwave Greetings from across the pond in the USA! I just tried searching for the part numbers for the bolts, but I had no luck. I ordered them from idparts.com along with the belt and pulleys. I hope you can get them. Thanks for watching my channel and I hope it helps you.

@@Corysdiyauto Oh thanks, maybe I have to call up VW directly and see if they can give me the parts numbers.They still run these engines here pretty commonly in cars so I should get some parts, although the VE diesels are getting very rare here, too.

I don't think my mechanic got my plastic turbo tube back on right. I just noticed it's been rubbing on the belt next to the tensioner.

It definitely shouldn't be touching the belt. I would take it back to him and have him fix it the right way.

Dont discard the pin. Use it to hold the tensioner in place when replacing belt.
