I recently bought a 2002 Eurovan MV, and it came with 3 different keys. I was able rekey the liftgate AND the driver's door to match the ignition, passenger door, and sliding door. Additionally the angle at 4:21 allow me to figure out just where and how that "extra" spring on my desk was supposed to go. Since I couldn't see anyplace obvious and the latch still functioned without it. So thanks for this video.

Thanks for the video. I was In bits today as I locked the sliding door, pulled the key out and the barrel was still attached to the key. thought I was going to need a new lock but watching the video, I may only need to fine the small pin you are knocking out at the beginning.

Hope you got it sorted, I thought it was going to be expensive but the barrel was only £16 direct from VW.

+T4 Tips & Guides luckily we have a few good guys at work with all the tools n knowledge required to build almost anything from scratch. i took the barrel to bits cleaned everything up and replaced a pin that had snapped in locking mechanism inside the door. works like new. many thanks again.

Great video. I am looking to convert my T4 from barn doors to a tailgate. I have read that the lock barrels are different. Do you think, by using your process, the wafers could be swapped over from the barn door barrel to a tailgate barrel in order for it to use the same key? Cheers

Yes. I believe the front doors, side sliding doors, and barn doors use the same barrel. The up and over door or tailgate you wish to fit uses a slightly longer barrel. They contain the same amount of wafers/tumblers.

I used a citrus based de-greaser. It is called Virosol.

at 3.32 mins you can see inside the cylinder housing and there are four strips of metal which act as a key stop (?). Would anyone know what they are called please? Trying to find some replacement. Following this very helpful video I have found there are two missing from my lock, thus it will not let me open the door and take key out!

excellent, bookmarked. just snapped off driver side lock yesterday. either tampered with, or has been broken for a while,and just came out now. so..? i can modify a replacement to work with old key? - do you have a tip for removing the plastic studs retaining lining panels inside the van model? thanks for the tutorial, would be lost without it.

+lazy dog I remember when the drivers door lock barrel broke on my T4, half the barrel came out and was on the end of the key! As for the plastic studs, they can be a pain to get out, I have just taken the fibreboard roof panels out to replace with plywood ones. You can get a bag of 50 panels studs on ebay for about a fiver if you need to replace any.

Thanks for the video, do you have any tips for placing the top 3 pins if you dont know which numbers go where? I lost the top half of the barrel.... Many thanks

It was a while ago now that I did this job but if I recall correctly there are 6 or 7 types of wafer/pin so to work out which ones go where should only take a couple minutes via trial and error. I know the people who have done this job many time aquire the ability set up a barrel just by looking at the key profile.

All I can suggest is trying to tap the pin out from the opposite side I show in the video, it may hve been removed before and could have been bent or damaged. Are you trying to knock it out with a short length of 2mm diameter rod as suggested?

yes 2mm but the pin has only budged maybe 4mm. I think I'm into the barrel hole but that pin is a a real pia ... mind you the vehicle is 25 years old.

Hi Alice, you can buy the springs on eBay (UK) they are £4.25 a bag, search for "NEW GENUINE VW AUDI SEAT LOCK BARREL TUMBLER PLATE SPRINGS 443837254" Hope that helps.

Hi. Just found this video as my drivers door lock has recently gone. I bought a new barrel with new key and my question is.. Do i need to go through the whole removing wafers and springs etc or just put in the new barrell that is already loaded with wafers and springs. If i dont mind having a new key for just the driver door then is it that simple? Thanks

I would buy a genuine barrel and fit the wafers from the old barrel and continue to use the original key that matches the other locks. If you have bought a barrel with the wafers fitted, I assume it is an aftermarket one, I guess this will fit into the mechanism. Fitting the genuine wafers into a non genuine barrel may be an option, only one way to find that out, difficult for me to say without seeing what you have bought as a replacement. If you are not bothered about having different keys you should be ok just doing a straight swap, again, it is difficult to say for sure when you can't see the parts.

I would buy a second hand genuine part, the non genuine will not be as good a quality.

What happened to the rubber seal that stops all the grot getting in and causing the lock to fail ? You didn't replace it.

+Robert Warner Hi Robert, if you have a look at 7:04 on the video you can see the new barrel has the seal you mention in place (a new seal was included with the new barrel and was already fitted when I took it out of the packet). If reusing the old barrel the seal can be cleaned and reused.

Hello to you, i see that you're a t4 spécialiste, i have a problem on my t4 1.9td abl, when cold i have a lot of trouble starting i have to use brake cleaner to get it to start... My glow plus are New my battery is 1 year old thé compressions are good and when it agrees to start it Stokes à little Black and thé engine coucghs, can it com from thé solenoid valve or the injection pump i don't know if you can hello me.. once it start it runs fine currently i'm in the moutains and this problem appears when it's vers cold last year there were holes in the cold accélération once it mounted at 90° everything Was rule we can talk to ofter you money in exchange this truck is my whole life this is my house...

Hi, sorry to hear you are having problems. Difficult to diagnose without having the van to look at. Possible pump timing issue. Is your cold start handle in place? The cable, more of a thin metal rod, can snap if not kept lubricated. The cold start advances the throttle and assists in starting. Best to visit a VW specialist who can diagnose the issue. Sorry I cannot help more. Hope you get it fixed.
