To mark the 141st anniversary of the invasion of Zululand by the British in 1879 I decided to walk the route that the central column took from Rorke's Drift to Isandlwana.
It's a wonderful hike - beautiful, quiet and with plenty of opportunities to interact with the fantastic locals of this region of KZN.

Thanks for the video, again this brings to life your podcasts. Stunning countryside but I bet harsh if your marching in boots and uniform. Thanks for making history come alive.

Incredibly fascinating. It feels like you're living a dream alot of us would like to live and witness. Spine tingling when you were literally next to the buffalo River, were Lord Chelmsford led his soldiers on that very day. But just being next to them stones is a wow moment. Thanks for sharing

If I'm not mistaken Chelmsford was having a road built from Rorke's Drift to Isandlwana. That would explain his decision to split his force that fateful day. He was delayed and was looking to initiate action.
@redcoathistory

Hi mate- he wasn't having a road built. There was an exisiting wagon track. He didn't have the engineering capability to build roads. Just to help slightly improve what was already there. Thanks a lot. Chris.

@@redcoathistory On that note I was surprised to learn that Chelmsford camped for six days after the raid on Sihayo's kraal before moving on to Isandlwana.

Great video as usual. If someone truly wanted to walk the Isandlwana battlefield extensively, as well as the RD site what length of tour would you recommend? Most of those I see spend a morning at Isandlwana, or an afternoon at RD before moving on. It seems like one could spend most of the day at Isandlwana alone, and I'm not even sure the time for Fugitives Trail would change that.
@redcoathistory
@redcoathistory Год назад
Thanks. It’s a good question. I would spend a full day at Isandlwana and try to cover all the key points including the ridge, Durnford’s donga etc etc. If you are fit and strong you could do the fugitives trail in an afternoon but it needs a guide and/or some setting up if you want to swim the river at the end - it’s also east to get lost. Rorkes Drift only needs a few hours but I’d definitely factor in climbing shiyane mountain and also exploring the caves where the Zulu sharp shooters were hidden.

I’m from Canada and I have camped many times in bear country but I don’t think I’d be able to sleep a wink camping in South Africa! I’m sure the locals would find it hilarious but I would be terrified of lions getting me. Lol

Great video mate. Apart from the roads and hut/houses that are about now, do you think the landscape looks pretty much as it would've in 1879?
@redcoathistory
@redcoathistory 3 года назад
Hi mate. Yes, I think it must look quite similar tho I was told there were fewer trees then.

I stayed at the Rorke's Drift hotel and enjoyed it very much - it's probably not as fancy as the Isandlwana Lodge or the Fugitives Drift lodge tho so it depends on your budget...All of them are clean, safe and supply good meals...

@@redcoathistory my family actually stayed there for a couple of days and actually we had a couple hundred visitors over and they all decided to get some of the locals dressed up in Zulu outfits and we had a huge battle which resulted in actually a couple locals dying rip

How long did it take the column to reach Isandlwana from RD, i guess far longer with slow moving supply wagons etc.
@redcoathistory

Yes, correct - they lumbered there way forward over a number of days with a small battle at Siyaho's kraal on route.

Why did they not just move up and defend the top of the mountain?
@redcoathistory
@redcoathistory 3 года назад
Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard younghusbands company did but eventually they ran out of ammunition and bayonet charged. It is one of the most moving moments of the battle. The terrain on most of the mountain doesn’t really lend itself to defence and also I genuinely don’t believe the officers believed things were as bad as they were until Durnford pulled back leaving their flank exposed / after that they were done for.

@@redcoathistory Thank you for your reply. I have been wrapped up in the Zulu Wars and the Boers since I saw the famous movie. I am so thrilled to have found your channel and to message you. I wish I could tour the sites there. Believe it or not, I have some ties to Africa. My Great Great Grandmother was from the Bantu's. What you said in your introduction is true. History is being lost because of the failure to carry the message of battles like this. I am 50 years old and a War Veteran myself. It is astonishing how we keep repeating mistakes because we fail to learn from history. It is sad that history is not an important subject in schools like it used to be. It was a pleasure to message you. Be safe and I hope to converse again.
