Walmart's Self-Checkouts Get WORSE, Paying Customer Ends Up in Prison 

I was using self-checkout at Walmart once and an item wouldn’t scan, so I asked for employee assistance. He came over and manually entered the item number and I thanked him. He then said “make sure you pay for your items” with a smirk on his face and walked a few feet away, but stared at me as I finished my checkout. If I was trying to steal, then why would I ask for an employee to help? 🤯 The real kicker is that as he was watching me, an actual thief was walking out of the store and alarms went off and she ran and got away! 🤣 Way to go Walmart! 🥴

Something annoyed me about the one case where a woman spent 6 hours in jail, THEN Walmart reviewed the camera footage, THEN they dropped the charges. Could they not review the cameras first before pressing charges?

The irony is that management don’t mind stealing from everyone else.

Isn't it cheaper for them to pay a cashier 15 bucks an hour than to go through all these lock boxes and self check out billion dollar losses? Are they really this stpd? They will get sued into oblivion if there is no proof of theft.

So if an item doesn’t scan or you make an honest mistake, Walmart has the power to put you in jail for a $5.00 item. Live cashiers also make “mistakes” and charge you more than what an item costs. Do we have the same power to sue Walmart for millions of dollars if they are charging us for a product with the wrong price?

As a former Walmart employee... Walmart and I know for a Fact that 70% of their Loss is from Employees!! They made that clear. Mislabeling, mispricing, misplacing items and out right theft ... So basically...they are 'attacking' the customers because of the employees.

I was using self check out. A employee stood beside me watching me scan every item. Staring at me to the point that she wasn't helping other customers. When I was finished she asked me if I was to pay for the bottle that I was "hiding" in my sons car seat. I asked her if she was serious. With a dead pan expression she said, yes you need to pay for that. This was his bottle that had milk in it. I was so angry and confused. Another customer who had been waiting for help, and watching the situation started yelling at her. The manager came over, it was an entire scene. I never go to self check out now.

What really makes me angry is that they aren't paying for labor, but grocery prices are still going up. Yet they say they aren't price gouging people.

I was a weekly Walmart shopper, but that stopped when they got rid of all of the cashiers and I was forced to self-checkout an overflowing cart of groceries. They only give you around 18" of space to bag your stuff so you are forced to place the bags back in the still full cart. It is a huge hassle to keep everything straight. The attendant would stare me down (but not help me or give me a solution). The machine would malfunction. The last straw came when I was already tired from shopping their massive store. I then had to self-checkout (no cashiers) while being stared down. Now I'm frustrated and crabby and feel like a criminal despite not doing anything illegal. As I am going out the door I am stopped and they check my entire cart against my receipt! Guess what, I had paid for everything. Of course, no apology. I'm giving them my money, doing their job, and they treat me like I'm a criminal? No thanks, Walmart. I now shop elsewhere unless there is no other option and mostly go to Aldi. Cheaper prices, smaller store (so I'm not tired), super fast checkers, and a huge counter to bag my groceries. They even ask me how I'm doing and give me a smile. They seem happy to have my business.

I've been using Walmarts online grocery delivery service for a couple of years now. And in that time there have probably been 10 or more incidents where they forgot to give me an item that I ordered and paid for. I wonder if I can have them arrested?! 😏😂

I'm an older person... I love self checkout and never had an issue. Now I've probably jinxed myself. Especially after watching this... I might have to rethink this.

Being a Retal Loss Prevention Manager for over 30 years. Most SHRINK is due to paperwork mistakes in receiving products, shipping, delivery, paperwork, failure to log out damaged goods, and overall POOR Training of employees.

I was recently falsely arrested for theft through Walmarts self check out . And I wasn't even at Walmart. So between Walmarts security system and the local police they put an entirely fabricated case together & I had to fight in court to prove that I wasn't even there. Something needs to be done about this!!

Thieves run in, take loads of stuff and are allowed to run out with their loot. No one stops them. But, an innocent person gets humiliated and/or arrested?! Makes no sense. Arrest the real thieves.

This mess could lead somebody to believe that the mere act of shopping itself may be illegal.

When self-checkout started, it was replacing the express lanes. But people with huge amounts of items started using them. I have seen people not scan items. People just do not think they are being monitored. There are so many items that have to be locked up because of thieves and that makes things very hard for honest people. Waiting for someone to open a case can take 15 minutes or more. I was buying perfume in Marshalls and I saw people standing around the case, I asked if an attendant was coming, nobody knew. So I went to customer service and asked if someone would open the perfume case and a person came with me. Once I got there, people were saying this one was there first and who was next, but she got mine first. Everybody then complained about how long they had been waiting, even though nobody asked for assistance. The kicker was that even after she got the items out she had to walk them to the register and you had to pay for them before you touched them. I understand why they have to do this. I have stopped complaining and accepted the fact that the world has changed and people are no longer as honest as they once were. This is what people should be angry about.

They want us, as non professional cashiers, do their job, and blame us we didn't do it to their satisfaction?

I was totally humiliated at a neighborhood Walmart. The cashier rung up my tissue 3 times, however I never checked or knew it until I got home. I only bought one PKG. Had my receipt, took it to customer service but I was ridiculed by the cashier for not reading the receipt before I left the store. My response was I used to work for Walmart so I trusted them, wrong answer. Stood there for forty minutes while they checked the camera an found out that I was right an then the nice attitude comes into play. Sam's Walmart left the day he died.

This is just crazy. I have had it several times that i will realized, when i got home, that their cashier will scan one item twice.

When I had to push the assistance button to get the spray paint , when the person would finally show up I said well I don’t need it anymore the train already left

Notice how if you make a mistake and "steal" something... it's a criminal case and you need to go to jail, court, and pay fines. If Walmart overcharges you for something or doesn't give you what you paid for... well... that's a civil matter that can be resolved amicably.

They let repeat offenders out but harass people over a 10 dollar item. Solid logic

When I was a child my mom missed scanning an item under her purse and didn't see it until she was at the car getting her purse out of the cart. She rain back in to pay for it letting us kids in the car. She was afraid of taking it back in as she heard stories before of people taking something back in and the store trying to press charges on them. She never had an issue but mistakes can happen. This wasn't at a self check out this was at a cash register with an employee.

From UK I shopped and used the self checkout one Sunday and store was due to close. Scanned items and started to walk home and got notification from bank saying card declined. I called the store and said really sorry but I have accidentally stolen from your store. They were shocked about me called had to repeat myself. Told them will return next day to pay for items I had purchased. Went back and was told this never happens. I don't know why I didn't realise I hadn't paid maybe it was trying to ask me for a pin number as banks sometimes do this to prove the card is yours. Was embarrassed but all sorted.

So I used to work at this one target… 2 weeks ago I picked up my meds at target pharmacy, paid and put it in my reusable bag. I continued shopping when one of my old coworkers came up to me and whispered “hey, AP thinks youre stealing” I asked why and he said they wanna check my bag since it’s bulky. I took out my meds(it was for depression , anxiety, snc adhd) and held them up to the camera and started saying “IM NOT STEALING, JUST MENTALLY ILL”

Something I learned in my marketing class is if an item is too hard to obtain (doesn't have a price, is on a shelf too high, ect.) customers will just do without. They're probably losing way more money than they realize by locking stuff up.

Before Self Scanners, my mom and the family went to a newly opened Winn Dixie. She had approval to pay for our groceries with a personal check. Little did they know we usually purchased over $300 worth of groceries. When we got to the checkout, the cashier had signaled for several butchers and a guard to come to her register. My mom was livid! We left the three carts of groceries right there, with my mom vowing never to shop Winn Dixie again.❤

They will terminate the self checkouts and ask people in the community to volunteer as cashiers.

One thing my manger told me while I was working retail that I will never forget is that the customer does not owe us anything. Which is very true. There enjoyment and happiness in the product is what we should strive for. Company’s who have policies that harass their customers is so unethical.

What a wild topic, I remember working at many stores with managers who constantly thought all their hired staff were worthless thieves. Now they're just applying all the same garbage to the customers directly. Amazing that retailers have actually found a way to treat the customers even worse than they had before.

I've never stolen in my life - my momma raised me right. Well, I am banned for LIFE from my local Walmart for walking towards a counter to pay for my items. I turned a corner and 4 police officers grabbed my cart that had a total of 5 items, 2 bags of socks, 1bag underwear and 1 bag undershirts. In FL. anyone can be trespassed from private property without reason. A BUNCH OF BS!

What happened to page is almost what happened to me and my roommate. We accidentally forgot to scan one pizza with a FULL cart of groceries and we ended up having to return it and everything else. They took our ID's, and said that if this every happened again we'd be arrested on the spot and banned and have a permanent notice of us from the store with our record. They told us we weren't getting arrested that time cause it was under $50- we haven't used Walmart since.

It’s true that shoplifting is a problem that feels it’s on the rise, but it’s horrible customer service to assume that every customer is going to steal, especially if they’re treated this way.

In Sweden, our big grocery stores often have self-scanners. Hand-held devices that you bring with you into the store, scanning items as you pick them up and put them in your bags. When you check out, it will sometimes randomly flag you for an employee to check your items. They either scan a few, or all your items. Should a non-scanned item turn up, they automatically get added to the cart when checked, and you get flagged for more frequent checks. This way, if you commonly "miss" items, only THEN would you get any repercussions. If you clear your next checks, the system removes the flag. It's incredibly effective, and while some stuff does slip through, it does discourage people from stealing.

I was at jewel the other day and an associate was giving me dirty looks. A screen popped up that said an associate was on the way. When she got there a video popped up. Literally showing me scanning my items. Its also on the list. So shes like okay but you didnt scan those. I pointed to the cart, of course i didnt they are still in the cart! Then she watched me the whole time. I did nothing wrong. If i had more time to shop i would have just left and went somewhere else.

I had this happen once over a package of blueberries! I paid about $281 for my purchase and I swear I scanned the blueberries, but they called the police. Charges were eventually dropped, but the embarrassment of the entire thing and being taken to the police station to actually process me and all has scared me from buying anything at Walmart since. I believe the blueberries were less than $5 and they viewed the footage and saw I scanned it, but it didn't register or something. I now buy most of my stuff on Amazon and rarely go to Walmart where an honest mistake can cause me so much embarrassment and aggravation.

We are becoming more, and more distopian. It's scary how much control everyone has over us now. I used to love to go to Walmart with my friend, and pick up snacks for day trips, and get things for my car. And now, I have to ask for an employee about ten times now.

I once was being watched and instead of watching the other guy who placed a Kool aid pack underneath an item to get what he wanted at cent's but they apparently wanted to watch me instead 😂

I quit Walmart altogether including sams. The major difference between Walmart and Target is customer care. In Walmart, every customer is treated as a risk. At Target, every customer is treated as a guest. I have been away from Walmart for more than a year now and I have spent thousands with their competitors due to their indifference toward their store patrons. I will likely never return, and I am not alone. This group is growing fast.

Exonerated her??? Why wouldn’t they check the footage first before accusing? How is it not illegal to falsely accuse someone of theft but it’s illegal to waste resources for false allegations?! Tf!!

If a store gets a warrant and you are cleared in court you can then sue the store and the police Department who didn't properly investigate. This has been done many times.

Here's a thought... In the all self checkout stores... could we claim medical disability to force the employees to do it? It's not worth the risk to save them money AND have them accuse people unjustly. If they are that concerned about theft bring back actual cashiers.

There was a guy having a snack in the employee break room at a Safeway. An employee came in and said, you don't work here! He said, what do you mean? I just self checked a 150 dollars worth of groceries!

What is the point of a brick and mortar store without you being able to looking at and compare the items you’re wanting to buy? Then just order everything online. We’ll have no reasons left to leave our homes soon. Dystopian nightmare is right

It is bizarre to tie up a store employee for 20 minutes to walk around and unlock items and then go to a self-checkout? They got rid of cashiers to save money and now they got to pay other store employees just to walk around and open doors???

Walmart needs to stop the nonsense! Get rid of AI, bring back the human cashiers, and arrest and prosecute the real thieves.

Biggest issue is that normal customers are not the ones stealing thousands worth of merchandise. It's organized retail theft. Go in, grab as much as you can, and run out to a waiting car. If you want to stop theft, stop criminals like that, not honest shoppers.

I had an experience at a Wal-Mart where I waa only buying 7 items. Item #2 got flagged as not scanned. Attendant came over and reviewed the camera footage on screen and I pointed out 2 items scanned and two items in bag. Item #3 flagged as unscanned, repeat verification. Item 4 went fine. Item 5 flagged as unscanned. Item 6 flagged as unscanned. I waa livid at this point because the attendant refused to come over and clear it up. I took out my cell phone and started recording. I recorded each item I placed in bags and recorded the on screen scanned items. The attendant finally came over and verified all of tge items in the bag were scanned. I payed while the attendant watched. I still got stopped at the door and was forced to wait while the door attendant and security verified all 7 items again. They verified all items were paid for, yet still asked me to come with them to their security office. I informed them that I would only do so under protest and against my will. I then followed by stating that if they have already verified everything was paid for that detaining me was in violation of my 4th amendment and that any detention will be considered abduction; which is a class 3 felony. They looked at me all shocked. I then told them that it is either that or I go willingly if they agree to pay me for my time ( $150 an hour). They said, " we aren't going to pay you." So I responded with, " then I'm not going with you." They responded with , " then you will have to leave without the merchandise." I responded, " that would be theft, as I now own those items." 10 minites of a stand of before a head security person came down and told them to let me go. He apolgized and returned my items to me.

Here's a thought: put employees in the store, like there use to be. Take out the self checkouts. Put security at the doors. We're already paying ridiculous amounts of money for everything in the store, yet we don't have employee assistance 😕

What happened to me two days ago was I found some items on the clearance isle and put them in my cart to buy them. When I went to the self checkout and was trying to scan them the items scanned for a different price than the stickers said. I was stopped as I was going out the door and made to go to a room. They said I was price changing. They refunded the item and made me give them my ID and made me sign a paper. Then they let me go and didn't give me my other items I had paid for. It took me calling the main office before they gave me my items, which the security woman opened one of the items. It was not opened when I put it in the cart. I feel violated. I will be contacting a lawyer.

I thought self checkout was gone but went to Lowe’s yesterday and it was only self checkout.

I’m a senior citizen! They tried to arrest me for not scanning an item. They pulled up a video and showed me scanning and it beeped but never registered on the screen! 💯 Believe these people never intended to steal!

4 years ago I got a new job that required steel toe shoes, so I went to Walmart. I bought the shoes, socks, 2 pair of blue jeans and 2 shirts; about $62 total I guessed. The clerk at the checkout took the shoes for the 1st item and opened the box; she explained in great detail how people steal things in boxes. I was very amazed at her inquiry and asked for more details. She talked about: 2 left shoes happen if people only want that, different size shoes, missing shoe strings, cell phones and other things that were not shoes in the shoe box. I was totally amazed at the information and such a wonderful employee. I thanked her so much for her help and intelligent. I left with my cart and was reading my bill about 1/2 way to my car when I saw that the total bill was: $31. I remember the shoes alone were over $30. I read the bill again and saw that the SHOES, the steel toe shoes was the only item not on the bill. During the entire time the employee was explaining to me all the dangers of customers stealing things from Walmart, she neglected to scan my shoes! I love Walmart. Gulf War Vet 1990-91.

Why people continue to use self checkout with out the benefits of working there is beyond me. Until theres a discount offered for self checkout they can kick rocks

They are trying to make in person shopping as uncomfortable as possible so you’re more likely to buy online which often costs more.

NEVER forget about the guy who took to long to pay for his bike at Target and was arrested. He was having a problem putting in cash into the machine.

I set off the "missed scan" alarm when I moved my grocery list from the cart to the bag without scanning it. clerk came over, pulled up the video and we both saw it. No problem resulted, but that's all it takes for those things to set off.

Was at a Thrift store with all sef checkout. There are 6 self checkout kiosks and only two were open. Lines down the entire length of the store. A Walmart in my area without self checkout. Has 28 checkout lanes and only 5 of them are open. Waiting in line can be up to an hour before you leave. Many people abandon cart and leave.

I worked in Loss Prevention for many years from the store level to corporate level and what I learned is internal theft by employees is much higher than shoplifting. Much on the manager level and them blaming the people under them.

To avoid this problem with more than a few items I go to a checker... until... after buying and paying for the items that the checker scanned...$318...I was stopped at the door and told that I didn't pay for the paper towels...I then was able to go to self checkout and pay for them. My only saving grace was that I wasn't responsible for the item that was not scanned by the checker.

There’s a store near me where the buzzer will just automatically go off… happened to me once or twice and I’ll stop and turn around before an employee will just be like “nah, you’re good!”

I have anxiety so I choose the self-checkout. Less interaction the better for me. That's a horror story. But I would try to keep my cool enough because I'll have a juicy lawsuit

I'm 100% confident that a large chunk of these corps 'shoplifting' numbers are from underpaid, overworked and morally flexible employees taking their own 'benefits' in product.

One time the overhead camera activated showing me scanning items from over head… I realized that day I was balding on the back of my head…

Been using self-checkouts here in europe for over a decade and never had any issues. Once I forgot to scan an item, I rolled back when the alarm went off and the cashier helped me find the article which didnt go through correctly. No police, no issue, I paid what I owed and that was it. Why does the US always have expect the worst in its people? Jail because you forgot to scan a bag of jelly beans?

I remember going to Walmart and needing to get a new toothbrush. Although, I don't have a issue with high-rick items that are lockup, I do have an issue waiting 20 minutes. I just left and ordered mine off Amazon...

Walmart is NOT concerned about the "Customer Experience". They're only concerned with making money. Period.

I'll try to keep it short this time.. I worked there for eight years. Do not shop there. You are not wanted. Only your money is. When you walk into a Walmart, you are automatically guilty until proven innocent. I will never ever shop there again, in person or online.

The benefit of shopping in person is that you get to see, touch and really know the product before you buy it. If you are just going to put pictures, then just close the store and open a free pick-up point. They really just keep charging more for a worse and worse service.

Crazy how they will arrest someone for miss-scanning or forgetting to scan 1 item when they allow others to walk out with a cart full of un-scanned items including high price T.v's and electronics. All which is done intentionally. The thieves get treated better than an honest person that makes an honest mistake

I completely stopped shopping at WalMart a while back. Don't miss it at all.

As a former Walmart employee I can say those self checkouts are and always have been finicky. On my lunch break I got a little bit of candy and I used self checkout. As I was scanning my items the anti-theft system started up and I had to have a co-worker disable it so I could finish paying for my items.

That is EXACTLY what happened to my wife's niece. She had trouble scanning and an employee helped her. Paid for over 150.00 in merchandise and was nabbed at the door for shoplifting twenty dollars worth of stuff like napkins and a couple toys for her kids. She was with other family members and they put her in a room alone with security. When the police came, they said " do you really want to press charges"? Yes! She is a very timid person and was badly traumatized. Had to go to court, fined 350.00 and would have lawyer fees. DO NOT USE SELF CHECKOUT. It robs people's of jobs and traumatizes innocent people. Not to mention their record shows they are a thief.

I've heard multiple people say that Walmart is going to start charging people 98.00 yearly to use to self checkout counter because they believe people are stealing the groceries instead of scanning all of them and maybe some people are stealing the groceries and not actually scanning them but they can't accuse everybody of doing that

16:32 I was told at orientation when I started working at Walmart back in 2013: if you accidentally forget to scan something at self-checkout, just leave. Do not come back in and try to pay for it, because they might think you meant to intentionally steal it but felt bad at the last minute

This just reinforces my desire to continue using "buy online, pickup at store." I don't have to ring up anything myself, I don't have to wait in line for someone else to ring it up. I don't even have to go inside. Once in awhile I do have to run inside for for for two or three things, but that's much easier than the whole order. No one is going to accuse me of not ringing something/stealing. People still get to work.

At Walmart The door checker was busy with other customers so i walked out with my goods not showing my receipt. He chased me down and hailed down a cop to detain me while he went back in for further instructions. When he finally came out and ordered the cop to let me go I still had not shown the receipt. I do 95% of my shopping at Amazon these days. The other 5% goes to either Publix or Target.

I had to return a ladder to wallmart because they shipped me the WRONG ladder. I spent an hour in customer service as they opened up a full investigation only to find out that I had to take it to a different Wallmart location to get my money back. I was mad. While taking the ladder back out of the store I was stopped by a woman thinking I was trying to steal a ladder. I consider myself a pretty even-tempered man, but I was starting to see red. Whatever I said to her through gritted teeth scared her enough not to stop me and I left. The cheaper prices are just not worth the mental agony.

They assume the people using self check out are thieves yet they forced us to use the hated self check out. At this point Walmart should be run out of business.

I was at Walmart not to long ago and while checking out I was weighing an onion. I typed the code in with it on the scale it told me to take it off of the scale and put it back on. It added it to the total so I put it in a bag then it said item not scanned and had an employee come over there. Seeing these other stories I’m glad the guy had sense and after it replayed it in front of both of us said “it thought you didn’t scan it, you’re good to go”. Since that I don’t go to Walmart. They got rid of cashiers and now the machine claims you’re stealing after you follow the exact instructions it gives you.

I was told by some of the employees at one of the Walmarts near me. They said Walmart is testing out removing self check out and going back to the old way. The two I’ve been to in the north country are fully staffing the front end. It felt so nice to be able to pay for my stuff and just walk out because they don’t check your receipt and everyone’s so nice. I used to live on Long Island and every time I went to Walmart I felt like a criminal. Never had a traditional cashier but while using self check out they would have like 3 employees and they would stand over you. I remember once when I was working for TSA, I had worked an overnight shift and after I ran into Walmart to grab a couple things before heading home. I was still in uniform and only the self checkout was open so i went to use it, before i started scanning the one employee started to walk over to watch me 🙄. I started scanning my stuff and she goes “you didn’t scan those” pointing to the stuff still in my cart I just looked at her dead in the face and was like “well that’s because I haven’t made it to them yet as you know since you’ve been standing on top of me since I walked over”. I was scanning and placing them onto the scale, I don’t bring bags into Walmart. She literally called security because I wasn’t scanning fast enough. Security came, saw me in uniform, asked what was happening. Explained everything, showed them I had scanned every single item, I hadn’t paid yet and that the lady was standing over me to make sure every item was scanned and then started to give me attitude when I wasn’t scanning fast enough. I was literally the only customer. Security looked at everything telling the employee that I did nothing wrong. She assumed that because I was young and there so early that I must be stealing I heard her actually say it. At least the security officer had the decency to apologize, the lady just glared at me bc she got Trouble.

Half of the time my WalWal-Mart doesn't even pay attention to those leaving the store.

This seems like a grossly abused misuse of power both by police and walmart. If they weren't such cheap a$$es they could actually pay cashiers to do a job they want to force customers to do, and then punish them for when they get it wrong!

*Another warning! If you purchase an item that is labeled "on sale", make sure it scans for that price. Often the sales price has not been entered into the check-out-- whether it is self-check or cashier-check. After doing my own investigation for 6 months, I found that I would have been charged $75 more IF I hadn't checked my receipts. Also, people are sometimes charged an extra $10 for nothing! CHECK YOUR RECEIPTS!!

After waiting 20 minutes for someone to come with a key for some items at Walmart that were locked up. No one ever came so we left our cart of stuff in the middle of the isle and ordered the items from Amazon instead. Walmart seems to forget that they aren’t the only place to buy things

I rarely shop at Walmart now because of self checkout.

Wage theft is worse than retail theft. These large companies are criminalising consumers while stealing from their employees. This behaviour is disgusting.

Great advice from that attorney.... Avoid self-checkout. I always avoid it. But for a different reason. If they become successful among store consumers, that means no more cashiers. One maybe two store employees per vast aisles of self-checkout stations. A whole bunch of employees (cashiers) get fired because they are now no longer necessary. Even worse, is when cashiers actively encourage you to use self-checkout stations. No thank you! Do you want to be fired?

All of these charges from Walmart are ridiculous. I'm an avid user of self check out. This has opened my eyes about those machines. My store self check out machines all ways seem to have some issue but these store is always so congested and backed up at the live registers. You could potentially spend 45 minutes at live register.
