The 8274 is a very capable winch without mods. One of the best if not the best electric 8000 lb rated winches ever. In fact 4 wheel & off road did a winch comparison and the 8274 blew the competition away with its line speed and not starting to even really work the winch at all until something like 14,000 lbs and . With a snatch block it should pull far more than any offroad jeep or pickup should ever require. I disagree on the steel winch line. Its all about respooling it correctly and maintenance. Winch rope gets too many abrasions here in the sierra nevada mountains. Ive had 2 seperate exspensive ropes suffer from rock rub and snap on me at under 4 years old. Ive never snapped a steel cable or had one kink up on me but Ive always maintained my recovery gear along with my vehicles and all my tools etc.
steel all the way. but most pulls do not require the full length of the cable. so i have dumped the 150 feet down to just 100 feet. and carry a couple "extra" lengths. as well as rated bow shackles and pulleys. and yes the granite will eat a plastic rope up very fast. heck even a good fair lead hurts plastic rope under full load. i have had a 8274 winch on my jeep for almost 40 years, never had a steel cable snap. the way one pulls is the key.
Ive worked as a window washer and i rope we used was 3500 lbs working loads and much higher if we were to fall ,so yes ropes have come a long way ,yesterday i bought some general purpose rope for the boat and it maxes out at 250 lbs (same diameter) so it like you explained ,cable,s were king but now ...not so much . operating limits of winches on the tag is always empty spool so by making yours smaller you upped the pull capacity quit a bit ! thanks for sharing.
Your videos made me decide to go with a warn 8274. Picked up a very nice one used. Alot of people have made comments since I been helping out doing recoveries on its power and line speed. Need to work in some of these mods some day,
I did the same thing Jeremy, I couldn't believe how mint the winch was inside... SO nice I feel like I shouldn't have bothered taking it apart. But it's a nice chance for a good paint job!
Pto's are good, especially when they are fitted from the factory, I have pulled very hard with mine and never had an issues with power - I run 2X trolling thunder virgin lead batteries (Odyessy) which are amazing - if anythihng I have to worry more about the winch motor overheating than anything - I might fit a motor cooler to it in the future. The 700 build should be starting in about 2 weeks or less - hit a couple of snags but it's coming!
You should take a look at the husky superwinch 10, do a search on it - it is worm geared with an actual brake, it is built very well, not the fastest line speed but pulls hard. Some guys put a 6hp motor on them.
did you find a red warrior winch in north america? I don't much care for line speed as i'm not running competitions, I just want a worm gear winch - no planetary for me - especially because of the braking system.
What size was the sealed bearing in the drum? I am in the process of rebuilding mine and would like to do this to mine. Also I added the albright solenoid and the motor was pulling in no matter what I did. All the wiring was done properly so I am at a loss. The motor is the original so I am thinking about getting something better with the rebuild.
I dunno how easy it'd be to find on the internet, but there was a guy who modded an 8274 style winch to have two power sources. He could run either electric or hydraulic power, depending on what was needed or available at the time.
The bearing wont fit most applications because the drum end was custom - and machined to fit the bearing. hmm, so the solenoid would engage as soon as power was put to it? I'd return it. youll love the 8274
I like my T-max 12500 pound winch, never had a problem, it is a bit slower line speed but thats ok, I am not in any hurry when I am out playing... I run a full size chevy 1 1/4 ton military truck. and yes i pulled the 6.2 liter diesel out and put in a 454..ooorah....
Yes and I had one I could have put on but the 8274 outperforms the PTO any day, and if I ingest water I still want to be able to get out - personal preference.
Me too! I'm just rebuilding mine too. It appears that with the modified drum made from 1.5" bar stock he would have had to make a new wall for the drum too. So the 1.5" bar stock sticks out and that fits on the ID of the bearing. The factory hole size for the end plate that the stock drum fits into is about 3.600 so he probably got a bearing that was 3.750" OD and 1.500" ID and maybe about .750 or .800 thick.
Thats a nice winch. Back when Warn made really good winches. I am keeping my eyes open for some old warn winches. Not impressed with the new ones. Water voids the warranty. lol Nice mods.
