Joe Barry Carrol # 1(1980) Kent Benson #1(1977) Larue Martin #1(1972) Reece Gaines # 15 ( 2003) Mike Miller # 5 ( 2000) Mario Hozonja # 5 (2015) Stanley Roberts #23 (1991) Andrew Nicholson (2012) Steven Hunter #15 (2001) Alvin Robertson
Agreed 💯, plus the narrator's perception of Ellison not being athletic enough is inaccurate . Quickness, solid agility, and leaping assets he possessed , his pronounced athletic vice was big man traditional strength and conventional bulk . Poor schemes that didn't align him properly, making him primarily a post up close to the rim player ,when he should have been implemented in a mid to high range post dynamic.,only going down low ,exploiting smaller defenders on defensive switches ,or cumbersome unathletic bigs coming in the game off the bench occasionally.Injury's obviously was his obvious second career vice which hampered his development . Pervis Ellison isn't by any stretch of the imagination the worst NBA number one pick .
Definitely not the worst number one pick of all time and by a longshot not the worst. Injuries robbed a lot of his abilities to maximize his skills. I know you mention he was short for a center, but he did have long arms that helped make up for a lot. If he did not get hurt so much, I think he would have made a few All-Star teams, I don't know if he would have been Hall Of Fame great. He was a not a big of a bust as many make him out to be, he was nowhere near regarded as good as other big men drafted number one (Ewing, Olajuwon, Sampson, O'Neal) during that era.
The guy that should've gotten picked #1 in that draft should've been Stacey King. The Kings would've been the perfect team for him. Instead he picked by the Bulls and got buried on their depth chart.
Do Brandon Davies. I think he was a first round prospect with Jimmer at BYU but got like in trouble for havin sex or some dumb shit. N he my age n from my city but I never heard about him until those college years so I would like to inquire more about his background
@@vizionaryentertainment8464 Honestly. I feel if he went where I honestly thought he was gonna go like 10th or 11th his career would be totally different now. There wouldn’t have been as much pressure on him as it was in Cleveland. Nothing about his game said “franchise player” but Cleveland thought otherwise
Joe Smith and Kwame Brown are perennial All-Stars compared to that flaming turd of a pick. Likely the worst player ever to see NBA minutes, and still be playing professionally somehow
@@thebestcentaur yeah. Bennet might be the worst player ever selected at any spot, not just #1. I'm talking even back when they had 7 rounds. He's still probably the worst of all time
Sorry but they drafted an undersized Center in the time of the behemoths... And he had few great statistical seasons, so he isn't the worst. He was a gamble in a weak draft
He didn't have one ...he balled until Injuries happened ..he was a top 20 player at his spot when he was not injured..he was a all star and play for gold...he had no stunted growth because he was a baller....injuries were his downfall but he balled out until it happened..
How could you not mention Sean Elliott. How could a draft that had Elliott, kemp, Divac, Raja, be the worst draft of all time? Correct me if I’m wrong. Elliott nba champion. Kemp played in the championship, Divac played in the championship! Rice really?
Yes finally lmao I can retire my please make a Pervis video campaign lol. Now I start my please make a Lionel Simmons video. Let’s get that Lionel Simmons video. 26PPG his last year in college and ends up being a bust
How on Earth is Anthony Bennett not the ABSOLUTE consensus worst number 1 pick? I mean, some of the other guys just either got hurt early or at least went on to be average role players. Bennett has done neither. He just totally sucked from day one and never improved at all and was out of the league in no time. I mean he didn't even look as good as an undrafted late season addition to a last place team plagued with injuries who were in there 3rd season of tanking for picks. Like the worst player on a team that would finish 2 and 80. He would probably finish out his contract working in the concession stand
Great job as always. But 1989 wasn't the first televised NBA Draft. I believe that was 1984. And I definitely remember watching the 1987 draft when Scottie got traded for Polynice.
@@williamrogers7974 “Sacramento drafted him 1st overall in the first televised NBA Draft… along with the first draft that used the 2-round format we see today.” I cleaned the wax. Good look. Still hearing the same thing though. Maybe your ears are too clean, Remember if the Q-tip has blood on it, you went too far.
From what I heard, the reason why the Kings took him was because their head coach at the time Bill Russell (Yes that Bill Russell) saw himself in Pervis
This is a throwback since most today don't know of him. To be honest, I don't see the negative hype, similar to the sorely named Joe Barely Cares aka Joe Barry Carroll, former All-Star.
Pervis made NBA history in an indirect/unconventional way: He was the first NBA player to twist his hair in locs, and he did it when damn near every hooper in the league rocked baldys or fades.
@@nickbrooks2408 Brian Grant started changing his hair during his 1st season with the Blazers in the 1997-1998 season. He never had dreads with the Kings.
That's a rhyme Jay would like to have erased from history I'm sure. Leaving letters off a word for the sake of a rhyme. That's Method Man's worst trait. Jay will mention any obscure player for a rhyme. Van Exel, kittles, starks, Alonzo,I heard Brevin knight from Paz. No reason for it just wordiness that is so outdated. Roc La Familia and RD are his only album I'd be caught dead listening to.
1989 was definitely not the worse draft, that honor should go to the 2000 draft lol, with only 3 all star selections combined and one of them being jamal magloire 😭 but great video my guy, hope you're able to do a feature on michael olowakandi one day, that would be an interesting bust to talk about
The 1989 draft had Drazen Petrovic, Shawn Kemp, Tim Hardaway, Glen Rice, Sean Elliott, Bj Armstrong, Vlade Divac, Cliff Robinson and David Robinson began playing that season. So the 1989-90 Rookie Class was actually really good.
Ill tell you what, there was a point in the early 90's where Ellison wwnt for 20-11 over a full season on the Bullets where I thought he figured it all out. He was playing great defense while guarding guys like Ewing and Hakeem, was efficient in his shooting and just looked like the player he was in college. If he were a stock I would have bought in big time. And then the wheels fell off.
20 per in the league you can’t be a bum. With 11 boards… he was just fragile. 17 & 8? And then he stopped getting touches look at the FG’s. And he shouldn’t have been at center anyway at 6’9”
Are we sure about '89 being considered one of the worst drafts??? Seems like a lot of rotation players, a few All Stars, and a few All NBA players in this draft. Maybe not HOF but really long careers. Shawn Kemp and Tim Hardaway were in this draft. Even guys like Cliff Robinson in the 2nd round probably played 12-15 years or so?
I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. So, I know a LOT about "bad #1 and #2 picks." Portland has the WORST: LaRue Martin. Bob McAdoo, Julius Erving, and Paul Westphal were available. Portland traded LaRue Martin to Seattle, for "future considerations." Seattle waived him before he even played a game for them! It was very considerate of Seattle, to take him off of Portland's hands. Then there is Greg Oden. Now, this is different: "Considering who was AVAILABLE after him, I also give some mention to Portland taking Mychal Thompson #1. Because, #6 that same draft? Larry Bird. Portland is SO stupit when it comes to the #1 or #2 pick. I SWEAR, if Portland had the #1 pick in 1992, they would have drafted Adam Keefe or Alphonso Ellis or Gus Witherspoon.
I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. Larue Martin is the worst #1 pick, ever! By the Blazers, who passed on Bob McAdoo, among others. I think injuries while he was @ The UofL contributed to him being a disappointment. I recall reading a blurb that stated "He went from Never Nervous to Out Of Service", OUCH!! He was decent when he was healthy but I guess the keyword here is "when".
Mike Olovokandi was not a total bust, in my mind. He was a Top 10 center at one time, putting up 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Still, I do agree, you want more than those prime numbers, for a #1 overall pick.
Not even close. I personally don’t like calling players busts when injuries were the primary cause of their lack of production. But he has an MIP award and lasted 11 years, without having to go overseas or to the CBA (G league of the time).
Woah Woah Woah there now, Rice - "one dimensional?!" Rice back then was anything but one-dimensional. He was great at driving t the the hoop and finishing at the rim both at college, and when at Miami and Charlotte. He's nothing like a Reggie Miller, or other "one-dimensional" shooters. Not to mention back then prior to his knee surgeries and him joining the Lakers, he was also a pretty solid defender at the SF as well.
He played in the wrong era as well. Today he would have went through a Blake Griffin/Joel Embiid career route. He would have sat his rookie year to get healthy, then came back on a minutes restriction. who knows what could had happened if he was drafted now a days.
Anthony Bennett by far!!. Pervis was dominant in national championship over Duke as a sophmore, when soph's never were that good. Bennett was an unknown unless u followed mountain west conf. Thetes no way ay the time, you wouldn't think he was 'the pick'
He is Pervis Out Rebounded Again Ellison. He became familiar to me when he joined the Boston Celtics in the 90s and sported a long haired Afro hairstyle. He was retained in Cs when Pitino entered the scene.
SIZE. DONT MEAN ANYTHING !!!!!!!!!!!! PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!! DENNIS RODMAN PROVE THAT WRONG !!!!!!!!! PERIOD!!!!!!!! ITS ALL ABOUT BEING. A WARRIOR!!!!!!!!! NO FEAR PERIOD!!!!!!!!!! WARRIOR
Bro you are good at what you do but to be great you gotta do some research and you can b. Vlade, Sean Elliot n Glenn rice in that pic alone definetly not a weak draft.
I remember in 1991 (important to note, this book was published in 1991), they did a "Re-do of the 1989 NBA Draft." The #1 pick would have been Vlottde Divac. Of course, Tim Hardaway, Sean Elliott, Glen Rice, BJ Armstrong, Dino Raha, Clifford Robinson, Shawn Kemp, and even Mookie Blaylock had some nice years. I know that I'm the King of Hindsight 20/20, though.
