The 1986 NBA draft. By many accounts was cursed. By some was the worst draft in history. By few it illuminated a problem predominantly in the African American community that was seen as the norm for the times. 3 of the top 13 picks have died early deaths, 2 of the top 6 picks have spent significant time in prison, and of course arguably the best player in the draft, Len Bias, taken #2 and seen as a better player than the eventual goat Michael Jordan never played in the NBA because just 2 days after being drafted, he was celebrating and died from drug overdose in the middle of the night. The class holds the records for not only players that have at some point checked into rehab for substance abuse, but also for having the most lifetime banned players as well. Chris Washburn is at the top of that list. He was the first player picked after Len Bias went 2nd overall and expected to change the culture in Golden State with his ahead of time physical gifts and build. He was 6’11, lean and at times played with a motivation to be the best ever. What happens when that motivation is led to the wrong things, such as drugs and a lifestyle in-conducive and directly harmful to your biggest tool as a basketball player, your body? You become the perfect fit with the NBA draft class of 1986. You lose everything making your dealer rich, and your own mother even disowns you after acquiring control of you money because of your lack of discipline. That once confident pride of being the biggest name and best player in your city and level has two be swallowed as you return home with nothing but whispers of failure behind your back. This is a life Chris Washburn is taking in stride. Keeping his spirit up and enjoying the small town love once again, even if his name follows with, you hear what happened to him. Here are 3 reasons Chris Washburn’s growth was stunted. WASHED! Top 3 Pick In The Draft! Went To Rehab 14 Times! CHRIS WASHBURN,

In retrospect, this draft is very underrated, hurt by it's reputation as much as the actual busts. Brad Daugherty is so unappreciated historically, Chuck Person, Sabonis, Petrovic, John Salley, Rodman, Hornacek, McMillan, Ron Harper, Mark Price. That's just off the top of my head, I'm probably missing a name or two.

He’s playing pro ball in Russia and told my wife that he loves it, the travel and all the sights and things he has seen. Alex is a good genuine dude that is smart and financially sound. Washburn was like proto-Dwight Howard. Big, strong, extremely fast and could jump through the roof. At the time nobody saw anything like him. He was a MONSTER in high school and everybody thought he was destined for glory. Then a funny thing happened to him: he looked terrible at the McDonald's all-star game of 1984. He was the top player coming out of HS in 1984. When he took the court at the McDonald's game he got the loudest cheers. He was bigger, faster and stronger than every player there that year (also include Danny Manning) but during the game something......looked off. Andrew Lang, a 6-9 center who ended up at Arkansas, a player who Washburn should have been able to dominate, destroyed him in the post, denying him the ball in the block and keeping him off the boards. Now Lang would become a future NBA player but he had very little fanfare and had nothing on Washburn as an athlete and here he was just taking Washburn out of his normal game of jumping over everybody and dunking the ball in close. Washburn just shut down. By the 2nd half he wasnt even trying to grab rebounds anymore and was basically walking back on defense. At one point Derrick Chievous began screaming at Washburn to at least show a little effort on the court but by that time it was too late and Washburn's team lost What went wrong? Actually, probably nothing. Yes, Washburn dominated his HS opponents but he was a man amongst boys. He was a guy whose athletic gifts and body were so far ahead of anybody in his league that he never really developed the skills necessary to continue dominating at the next level. Washburn was good at NC State but was never dominant. He averaged nearly 17ppg and below 7rpg his last season at State. Good numbers for sure on a good team that made it to the Elite 8 in 86 but be should have been doing more. Washburn would have some terrific games against lesser competition over the season but against teams from UNC or Duke he looked average and disinterested. Id even go as far to say that his teammate Charles Shackleford had a better overall season for the Wolves. IMO I just didnt see Washburn becoming an NBA star even if he didnt have the drug problem. Im not saying he would become a bust but he was HIGHLY overrated and wasnt nearly as skilled as a player ranked that high. Yeah, the physical tools were there but the actual basketball skills were not. If anything he was a lot like Kwame Brown, another player who was pegged as a future NBA star because he dominated against smaller and less physically gifted players in HS. That said, I like Washburn and wish him well. Everyone likes a story of redemption and I for one will be rooting for him to find success in anything he does.

The NBA is predominantly black so any coach will seem to have a problem with mostly black players

Instead of going to the NBA draft after his sophomore year; "a few more yrs in college" would have been better for him... 2 is a couple yrs lol

State had a nice nucleus too. He and 6-10 Charles “Shack” Shackleford (r i p) in the paint..... swing man Chuckie brown, and Nate and Vinny Del Negro in the back court.( all played in the NBA ) Squad could’ve done a lil something in the ACC and NCAA tourney.

Many guys would be better off going to colleges in smaller towns in more rural areas. There are drugs everywhere but in most places it's much harder to find than in the city. You'll be seen at any college now so no longer the need to go to bigger school in or near city.

He from my hometown, followed him from high school thru his nba career .....very immature for his age and got deep into substance abuse and was out of the nba quickly and was going broke from drugs.....poor judgement, poor decisions, bad choices put him where is at....hope he has gotten his life together at this later stage of his life...🤷‍♂️🙏

Sorry. The Cavs drafted two choir boys who would have competed with the Bulls and the Pistons, had not their blind owner trading away another player from that draft, Ron Harper (4 rings). Word got to Cavs ownership that Harper was hanging with Dayton doughboys, even though he didn't drug or drink. Danny frickin Ferry. Hurl.

You can also do PG Andre McGee who played at canyon springs hs in Moreno Valley . Then played for Louisville and went on to win a national title as an assistant coach under Rick Pitino . Then everything came crashing down for Dre because Rick needed someone to be the fall guy in this prostitution ring . Dre allegedly supplied the women for the new recruits when they visited the campus 😮😮😮
