I just started tinkering with this a day or two ago. The reason it took so long to light is, as you can see, I did not have the air up enough to pull the oil. It seems to take about 2 psi to pull it up. I plan to have a bigger metal tank to store it in and have it elevated. Not sure how this will work but I plan to put an old smoker in the shop with some baffles to hold the heat in and then vent the exhaust through a hole in the side of the shop. I hope a fan sat next to the smoker will push enough heat throughout the shop. It doesn't produce any smoke but I'm sure there is stuff in the exhaust that I don't want to breath in. Still a work in progress.
The EPA says this is the best way to dispose of used motor oil.

Thanks guys. I ended up getting a metal 5 gallon diesel tank and building legs so it would be above the heater. I mixed about 10 oz of diesel to one gallon of oil. Cut the internals out of an old muffler and used that for my heat box. Ran the exhaust out the side of my shop. Works great.

Sorry youtubers I haven't been on here in awhile. The nozzle is (as stated below) a DELAVAN 30609-8 (SNA .75) SIPHON NOZZLE and HAGO SIPHON NOZZLE ADAPTER both from Patriot Supply. The truck is a 1951 Ford rat rod that I built from pretty much nothing. I have since moved and do not have the heater in operation and for some reason never took any pictures. I had a carbon monoxide detector hard wired in my shop. The sky is the limit with these things. Fun project and I learned a lot. Just a guy tinkering in the shop!

+lndnjiv I've sifted through the comments here and I can't find what I'm looking for. The Hago siphon nozzle comes in a 1/8" and a 1/4" on patriot supply - which begs the question, which did you use? It's getting cold here, think I'd like to throw one of these together if I can get an answer and the parts ordered soon enough. Thanks much

Nice job! You could heat a small open vent boiler too and use a small heater ( power throw) its more complicated but a boiler can be used with a indirect water , radiant floor heat what ever you want. just a thought

awesome! but, it went off couple times at the beginning, you said it is because too much air, the reason is because the atomizer is not effective, trust me, make the atomizer works on low pressure i mean at 10-15 psi, if you make it so, you will be so satisfied, the high pressure you need to atomize the fuel works on putting out the propane, but if ypu atomizes the liquid fuel before it put out propane, it will never be off the fire will continue no matter what psi is applied

@stanjuan1178
@stanjuan1178 9 лет назад
This does not look dangerous at all. BTW, I am no scientist. But I find myself wondering what is being put out into the air buring dirty motor oil in this fashion. I have to imagin that there is a reason the heaters designed to do just that are so exspensive. My local mechanic has just such a furnace, to burn used motor oil. It was SUPER exspensive because it needed to meet clean air standards.
@gabbermaikel
@gabbermaikel 9 лет назад
in those expensive burners there i a electric pump pumping up the oil in to the burner unit, and they have a electric fan to pump air around the burner to get the heat moving in to the shop. And why they are so expensive is because people earn lots and lots of money on them somewhere down the line. I think you can build 1 like the ones you buys for les then 200$
@stanjuan1178
@stanjuan1178 9 лет назад
Well, I as I said, I am no scientist. But I can still apply reason. Sure, there is mark up on anything. Ill even give you that the mark up on such a furnace could be many times greater than it should be. But when you are talking about the difference between $200 and the thousands that a motor oil burning furnace costs. I don't think it is unreasonable to think that there is more going on than simple greed. It would be interesting to hear from an expert on this matter, to have them explain exactly what the potential polutents are.
@gabbermaikel
@gabbermaikel 9 лет назад
Stan Juan where i work we have 1 of those bought burners. And what i said was in them is all thats in them. And on top of that they probably did some testing to get the best burn. So they used different sizes of holes for the air and things like that. And they start from about 1000 for a small 1, but to make a bigger 1 would not really be a lot more expensive because all you need is more steel to build it from and a bigger pump.
