Watch Chronicler Podcast #4 - Bronze Watches: History, Pros, Cons & the Future 

I have 30 automatic watches in my collection, four of them are bronze. I love them the most. Telling me stories. Also the mechanical movement allways considered by me as “living thing” since they have a “heart” to beat, they have a life span, they are changing over time as same as us, the users. Now we have another living part of our watch, the bronze case. It has a life cycle too, changing over time, allways different than it was two weeks or months ago. I love very much this aspect of an automatic bronze watch. Most probably I won’t buy any steel watch in the future, I keep getting more and more bronze. A big crown pointer date Oris, a Zenith extra special pilot, a Captain Cook, all could be my next favorite watch along with Zelos Hammerhead 2. Love them.

My first "luxury" watch ever (at 61) is about to be a bronze Ham Khaki. I like the idea of the extra weight, as well as the appearance. My second watch might be a Laco. I generally dislike shiny, flashy, so it seems I'm developing a fairly particular taste in watches. That, or it's a subconscious effort to avoid mortgaging my house to get into watch collecting and repair ;-)

I just picked up my iwc spitfire bronze. I cannot wait for the patina to develop. Already after one week I can see color changes to the bronze. I am enjoying it!!

I have three bronze divers- there’re great! Must be experienced first hand...such depth and beauty in this red metal! BTW- my bronze Phoibos patinas VERY slowly and evenly (absolutely no smell or blotches- super clean) . By contrast, my Glycine bronze has changed to an extremely dark, penny-like patina- will probably look like a Remington statue one day... love both looks!

You’re incorrect about aluminium bronze being the most common watch alloy. Nearly every watch today is phosphor bronze (cu*sn*). Tudor is possibly the one to use aluminium bronze (cu*al*)

The one caveat I have with a bronze watch is I'm not terribly interested in buying a used one with someone else's patina all over it 😄

Good one! I was close to buy the Oris Sixty Five Bronze with the stee/bronze bracelet but than another guy grabbed it. Loud swearing here! The ship's rear at 10.45 is the "Titanic", isn't it? And I think with Jules Verne and the Nautilus you've pointed out THE reference for bronze. Really well done.

What is the difference between bronze and gunmetal. I have a pocket watch from 1910 and is made of gunmetal.

It was an interesting video but merely reinforced my aversion to the use of bronze in watch manufacture. For me steel is the perfect material, being both functional, resilient and attractive.

Bronze watches is a way for chinese brands (such as Phoibos) to charge twice the price for a watch also available in stainless steel.

Can't see me ever buying a bronze watch. They just look manky after a year or two. Okay you can clean them but really! Life is too short.
