Thinking of buying an EV truck? Watch this video on the charging apocalypse for important information about EV charging, infrastructure problems, and what to consider before making a purchase. We also review the current state of EV charging in Canada, including DC fast charging options. Don't make a decision without watching this first!
We all use our trucks in unique ways. But to replace our piston-powered stallions with electron-driven bulls, we better be prepared to face the elephant in the room. The new generation of electric trucks are increasingly impressive - but not the infrastructure they desperately rely on to compete head-to-head with what Trucked Up guys and gals use their workhorses for.

All trucks serve a certain market segment, but EV trucks rely upon the same thing any other pickup does - and that's fuel. The failing charging infrastructure is a threat not only to electric trucks but to better pricing for gas and diesel as well. What has been your experience? What your biggest reason for not making the switch, or if you had, what would you like to see change? All comments are welcome.

It's like the government wants everything to fail 😅😅😅 No charging infrastructure and costs are more expensive 😅😅😅

You said it exactly right, right at the end. You benefit from EV's whether you drive one or not! Not only for the purchase price of the truck, but, fuel/electricity costs. It helps keep fuel prices down, because there is no longer a "monopoly" on fuel. They can no longer charge what they want, there's a "new kid on the block". With runaway fuel prices, there are more and more people willing to trade in petrochemical energy storage, (fuel) for electrochemical energy storage.(battery) Trade in fuel injection for pulse width modulation, or, trade in combustion for electromagnetism.

Thank you so much for your support and feedback! Yes, I'm hopeful that more options help make ALL trucks more affordable and accessible for a greater number of hard-working folk.

You are absolutely correct.. here in Ontario, more than 40% of the quick chargers are dead.. roughly 25% of level 2 are dead, and I'm talking 6 months.. and regarding these useless junk electric ford trucks , there some owner's I know can't even haul 10,000 lbs without losing more than 40% of their distance... Electric vehicles cannot pull, they consume massive electricity.. forget turning on your heater or AC while hauling, you'll never make it... They have great torque, but absolutely suck electric, faster 6:40 our hydro is going up because of consumption.. so now we pay higher gas taxes, and soon to be hydro.. Absolutely F_ _ Kin joke.... And now that piece of S_ _ T turdeau just slowed down production of the Windsor battery plant and sent the contract to south Korea... It was to employ over 2500,, now less 1500.. Complete A_ _ HOLE....

Can you show the source your statistics are from. I drive an EV and only encountered one charger in Ontario that was broken in 70,000 km.

25 KW 'fast' chargers, sad bad joke. And charged by the time and *not* the KW?

Yup.. We can collectively do way better than that. It's what holds the whole process back.

Tesla charging network is what put me over the edge in choosing Tesla. I agree with you, there's something amiss with the other charger networks - it's like they want it to fail. ....I wish someone did some investigative reporting to find out why. One particular point of concern is payment. WHY do you need a different app and/or credit card....you're connecting the vehicle with a WIRE for Pete's sake - it can pull your VIN and charge your account. It should be plug and go.

I have no idea why RU-vid had this comment in moderator purgatory but I just released it now that I found it there. My sincere apologies. You are so correct on this. The good news is that already 50% of the charging cos. have at least partially figured this out. Still not plug and go, but most now have a tap option with debit and credit cards - a vast improvement. The bottom line is that they don't manufacture the underlying auto, unlike Tesla, so ' pulling the VIN & billing' might be a real thorny issue with shared privacy, hacking, etc. I think you made a great choice.

My current CONTRACTOR vehicle is 2009 Extended Expedition 4x4 typically fully loaded to GVRW 3500kg, on the east side of the Rockies to you (YYC) so I drive to Golden, Castlegar, Cranbrook, Lethbridge, MedicineHat and “time is money” I’m not wasting time sitting on my ash doing nothing while my vehicle charges. 5 minutes for gas ⛽️ is where it’s at!!!!

MINUS winter daylight hours 8 (sunrise to sunset) and no sunlight = colder temp = MORE charge time required = more money spent (on “High Power 50’s”) F THAT !!!!
@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 6 месяцев назад
Yes, time is money. I don't have the distances you have, or the significant elevation changes. My company has CUT costs drastically because of the ev truck. 400km costed me $100 before. Now it costs me $4.80. But unlike you, I drive only 200km per day at the most and charge every night at home, so no time wasted at charging stations (or I would be cursing the chargers daily). So yes, absolutely. In your situation I wouldn't buy an EV truck either, or at least not until private charging speeds and infrastructure deliver (50kw is a TOTAL joke!), and the trucks have much more overall range capacity. Thanks as always for the comment!

At minute mark 5:40 you hit the nail on the head. You describe exactly how 99.9% of what all pickup truck drivers do, everyday, drive, tow, haul less than the fully loaded range of the shortest range Lightning. In fact the average fleet mileage is less than 100 miles a day. If you are in the .001% of people driving further than 100 miles a day only 1% of the people in that group travel further than a single 15 minute DCFC can add to the day. This is an absolute BS non issue unless you are a long haul truck driver and no one doing that is in a 1/2 ton pickup! Bottom line, the average 1/2 ton pickup driver spends 5 hours a year pumping gas into their truck, the average EV driver spends a half our plugging in and unplugging a year, that is a lot of road trip charging to make up for the time deficit. Can’t agree more about non Tesla charging however! I have to add that EA has worked great for me.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Matthew! I appreciate your agreement with the points I made in the video. It's important to highlight the fact that the majority of pickup truck drivers don't require the maximum range of electric vehicles. Understanding the average usage patterns helps us have a more informed discussion about the practicality of electric trucks.

I tow a utility trailer with my std. range Lightning every week, no problem. Work related, however. How far are you planning to tow? Do you have the ext. range?

@@truckedupevs Yeah I have the extended range with the towing package at some point will not be able to get the trailer I plan on towing across the country. Once I get a feel for the truck and trailer that is.
