Wait wait wait...in the beginning, when Lavagirl asked him to come to Planet Drool, Max's reason for staying behind is that he had school the next day. And the whole narration at the start is him reading about what he did that summer. So... "I haven't seen Sharkboy or Lavagirl since then." BOI ITS BEEN A WEEK AT MOST-

16:55 Max is The Daydreamer, the creator of Planet Drool. Sharkboy and Lavagirl went to Earth to get him because he was the only one who could stop The Darkness and save Planet Drool. However, because of The Darkness, Max forgot who he was and that he even had powers. When Lavagirl has her epiphany about being light, it burns away the Darkness and Max gets his memories back

16:00 The kid created a bloody solar system, and throughout the story warped reality in various other ways, he always had powers. The story was about him learning to access them. I agree he suddenly became a master and it was cheap, but the reason he has powers is very clear in the context of the film and logically follows from the plot and direction of the film. Even if it was a sudden jump.

Earlier when they first arrive on the planet, they tell Max his dreams are going bad at the Dream Lair, and the sound of the dreams being reverted is that "bzzrt" noise. When Minus adds the electric eels to Shark Boy's page, that sound signifies the change, and the eels appear below him.
