Yeah, but he doesn't have the right look* so he can't be the final love. *The right "look" in many of these love stories, whether intentional or not, tends to be white skin. See After, The Kissing Booth, Twilight, and I think 365 Days. In Twilight specifically, the author saw that fans were way more into the much more normal and sweet Jacob (who is also Indigenous and close to Bella's age) and decided to start writing him as an asshole to get people back on Edward's side. It's a pretty gross trend, imo, that shows a lot of these author's (and/or the filmmakers') internalized biases.
@@Arosukir6 with all the respect, I don't think it's that deep. It's just that the ''authors'' like to romanticize abuse and follow the absolutely problematic, bullshit, red flag idea that 'nice guys are boring', so they have to make their lead go for the abusive asshole
I seriously want a movie about a shy, bookish main character... then they never go out and the whole movie is about them ignoring every trope thrown at them awkwardly because that's the true introvert way.
Outside of saiki there was this one anime about a girl who's avoiding every guy in an isekai like her life depends on it. I don't remember their name sadly.
Oh my god I forgot about this movie! This girl I was seeing years ago asked for us to watch this together. She insisted and said it was her favorite movie. She CRIED while we watched it. I was deeply uncomfortable the entire time as in my last relationship I was cheated on and it was awful. But this girl knew that, had us watch anyways, and then told me “I want to have a relationship like them”. That was the last red flag I needed to see before deciding I no longer wanted to see this person. A week or so later and her friend sent me numerous texts harassing me so overall a great experience with both this movie and this person 10/10 highly recommend you watch👍
When Gilmore Girls did the whole "falling in love with the cute but mysterious bad boy who knows what books are" thing, at least the books Jess was into aren't ones that are on the required reading list for like 99% of the high schools in the US. And he had *opinions* about the books instead of just saying "That's a good book."
i think even JD and Veronica (heathers, the broadway musical edition btw) have a more loving relationship than those two... like at least JD actually loves Veronica and WILL kill anyone who hurts her, meanwhile this fucker has less personality than dirty pineapple
I feel the need to share with the class that in the books, instead of the dare to fall in love with her Hardin is dared to take her virginity, and after he does he takes the bloody sheets to show his friends as proof
I love the trope of: girl cheats on BF with love interest, BF finds out and breaks up with her, girl then goes "I'M SO SAD I LOST MY BEST FRIEND" like... Girl you cheated! You don't get to play victim when YOU did the despicable deed
enemies to lovers is so much better---there's so much you can do with that trope but that's just me. Also Wattpad is a place where 13 year olds go to read poorly written fanfics. Wattpad is actually the first place where people attacked my personality for calling out a Justin Bieber fanfic.
The Great Gatsby isn’t all a dream???? That’s just blatantly false omfg, there is no “it was all a dream” twist in The Great Gatsby. “I don’t mean to spoil it but… *proceeds to make shit up*”
I'm not sure cause I haven't seen the movie, but I think in the video Kurtis Connor did on this we find out that Hardin just straight up doesnt ever read, so it's a character moment when tessa inspires him to read a book. It's been years since I saw that video so I could be making something up
Tbh I love making up wild ass "spoilers" provided everyone involved is fully aware I'm being facetious and not actually giving anything away. For example if asked about the Franklin series (the one about the turtle) I might say "it's about Benjamin Franklin's personal diary detailing his kinks, crushes, and favorite custard recipes."
people named jenny are lethal weapons, i swear every girl i know named jenny was either a violent horse girl or wrote almost biblically long pieces of very specific fanfiction.
"fun" facts: 1) in the book harry and zayn made a bet on who would take her virginity first and needed to show proof (harry showed his friends the used condom and bloody sheets) 2) the author was on her 20s when she wrote this and she based it on her own story with her husband
There IS always a persistent character to pull the shy character out of their shell in these shows. Meanwhile when I went to college I didn’t talk to anyone, super shy - I made no friends!! Really wild 🤪
ahh, see, there's the problem. apparently you're supposed to bring your OWN quirky best friend to college. they don't provide those for you, really wish they'd tell you this stuff before you sign up :/
My best friend is absolutely obssesed with this series, I don't judge since she's actually a really nice person, but she's getting herself into a lot of drama and toxic releationships recently... Honestly, I hope she finds a piece of media that can show her how a healthy releationship looks like. This doesn't seem like a good example.
I'm stuck in isolation until after Christmas because I managed to get covid. So I've decided to watch every twinge of cringe episode over and over again until I memorize all of them.
This is a solid plan. Just to be clear, if at any time you feel the urge to actually watch the movies she watches, turn off every device and crawl under your covers! Covid might be melting your brain. If you stick with these reviews, it might even help you recover quicker. And there will be a test to see if you've actually memorized them all. All jokes aside, I hope the virus doesn't kick your butt too bad and you can just have a relaxing time at home. Spoil yourself. 💜
When Tessa’s mom “cuts her off”, I assume that’s not just over her dorm but, you know, textbooks and CLASSES. Which cost a lot of money, and if her mom stops paying how does she keep attending classes? Unless this story takes place over a single term?? Idk about other schools, but at my college terms spanned 10 weeks (11 if you count finals week), which less than 3 months! I feel like I’ve spent more time stewing over this plot point than the author spent planning the damn story
Chad Chad's editing is one of the only things that keeps my ADHD brain focused for more than 3 minutes at a time. Please watch all the other movies, apparently watching people suffer brings me joy.
@@likeadino8580 Yes actually, we have monthly meetings in which we all bully people named Landin or Landen because they are inferior in every way to the true Landon Gang. It is also a surprisingly exclusive gang, we deny 95% of Landons due to their lack of Landonness.
Who would’ve thought it would be healthy? The boy needs therapy and she seems to be a book smart college student who doesn’t know how to navigate things outside of pages very well
Before she said it was a Wattpad story, I was like: "Holy crap that looks like one of those paid Wattpad stories that's on the recommended feed because everyone apparently reads them even though it seems like no one has ever read it ever"
The fucking paid stories are so annoying cause they’re EVERYWHERE! And what’s worse is when you return to your account and find out like ten if the good stories you read have been turned into paid stories X-X
Well, sadly, it's not a paid one. I know a lot of people who know, and have read or watched After, and a smaller percentage that likes it. I'm pretty sure the books are even on the public library! It's considered one of the "big hits" of wattpad, along with Boulevard and another one which name I don't know in english, but in spanish is "A través de mi ventana".
His line about the Great Gatsby to sound smart is literally a lie I'm crying 😭 The script people didn't even like look it up to make sure they were right like wth
My aunt took me to see After at the theater, we both had no idea what the movie was about. The theater was relatively full. It didn’t seem like anyone enjoyed it. At the end there was the collective reaction of ‘wtf was that’ and I couldn’t contain my laughter when someone said very audibly “That was ass”
3:15- I like to let people go ahead of me for whatever, door ways, lines, etc, you know the usual. But if I was somehow blind enough to try to go through a doorway with another human right next to me and they said 'after you' I'd be like "see ya!" and skedaddle right out from embarrassment of being so unaware.
10:00 Come on, what college professor would be in kahoots with one of the boys in her class and give his love note essay to one of the girls. Obviously, or at least hopefully, the teacher has the intelligence to understand that they are both young, their drama is childish, and it is only going to cause trouble for both of them for her to get in the middle of this. Either the teacher can back away slowly, or she can ask Tessa if she is ok after this terrible toxic boy used and manipulated her.
One of the things I enjoy about Chad Chad's content is how she's usually always pretty cool and calm during her videos. But this is the maddest I think I've ever heard her. Having seen these movies, I don't blame her.
If you're team Landon now, you'll bash your head against the wall when she sidelines the successful, caring, charming Dylan Sprouse character in favor of lusting after Hardin in the second movie. And yes, I watched the series in an emotional time in my life. Ngl, the angsty teen romance in the first one was exactly what I needed at the time but her idiotic decisions in the second movie just completely turned me off from the series. Dylan Sprouse's character is seriously painted as an almost perfect man but she wants angry boy with daddy issues instead 😭
Truly. I watched Cynical Review's review of the second after movie, and I think that a far more interesting movie would be Sprouse's character and Tessa's mom banding together to rescue Tessa from this abusive relationship. Those two are the only engaging characters in the whole series.
Absolutely, I don’t remember the circumstances in which I witnessed any part of the second movie, it was probably a commentary channel, but yeah Dylan Sprouse was the only choice because he actually behaved like a reasonable human who cared about her in like a healthy way but no she decides to be thirsty for a quirky(toxic) bad boy (just a mess not even endearingly) with a book fetish
I read up to book 3 when they came out in the physical format, and I was freaking 13 years old. The movies are quite toxic but much better than the books, they actually toned them down A LOT. Hardin in the books is far more unlikable and cruel: in the bet he actually kept the used condom and the BLOOD STAINED SHEETS from when they had sex as proof; he's really possessive and manipulative; he had a serious alcohol addiction and anger management issues than are NEVER treated or taken seriously (zero character growth); he's a GASLIGHTER; there's no communication in their relationship and the only way they solved their problems wad through sex. And (TRIGGER WARNING) in the book the scene where he talks about his dad explains that the consequence of him being in debt with the wrong guys and not being home was that said guys broke into his house and gang r*ped his mom in front of him.
i read the entire freaking series and honestly i would have been fine if it was just a book about good girl falls in love with bad boy, tried to "fix him", nearly destroy herself in the process (optional) and move on with real character growth instead, we get tessa moves away to ny and they spend like 2 years ish apart and hardin gets a out of page character development and they get back together. no. pls tell me how they actually grew as characters ffs anyways this book is lengthy with a cliche ending at the end after 4 books, with minimal chracter growth, read with caution (and only if youre very bored)
Listen, I'm all for authors getting their works turned into films. That's great for them, but sometimes we need people to look at our work and tell us why it's bad.
9:28 i actually really teared up at that moment, idk i just found it very moving and i think the artistic choices of music, lighting, angle.. Everything was put together beautifully and made it very insightful to see the depth of the character on screen
chad chad i must say, i just started watching your videos not too long ago and i regret not finding you sooner. your comedy is just right up my alley and the way you're so genuine makes this feel like a very safe space
I appreciate that you’re always appreciative of us watching your videos, so I wanted to share my appreciation of your appreciation even though I appreciate that you put time into making good content. I also appreciate the excuse to say appreciate this much.
Not just today. Media has always done that. Toxic relationships where the man was the king of the house and the woman was the servant used to be the norm. I hate it so much though. I think it really fucks us up as a society to have so many "Beauty and the Beast"-style stories where someone is treated terribly or kidnapped and then they get Stockholm or trauma bonded and fall in love and people think "ok, maybe if I'm nice enough to this awful person who is attractive, they will eventually love me and become a good person." Except they don't, they just realize they can exploit you and treat you like shit. Sometimes they change but it's up to them and not someone trying to change them.
Storytime: I was browsing on wattpad when I was like 15(??) and I came across this story and I read the description, seemed cool, so I started reading it. Let me say now that I did not read the tags-(which you should definitely do on these sites-) I just checked if the description was interesting and if it was completed bc I’m sure a lot of people can relate to being super frustrated for finding good stories and then they’re discontinued (I know stuff happens but still) So anyway- I’m reading this story and some of the names of the guys this girl meets are...odd, like familiar odd, first she meets a guy (I can’t remember if it was Louis or Niall I think it was Niall Horan) now I didn’t know WHY but the name stood out but again- I didn’t know why- so I kept reading, then she meets a Liam Payne and he’s either with (I think) Louis Tomlinson or she’s dating a drab dude with that name (this was so long ago) and I’m like “okay- these names are REALLY familiar but w h e r e - Then she meets a Zayn Malik- and I’m like- bro wouldn’t it be funny if this was a 1D fic bc it’s starting to seem like one- and then she meets the love interest- HARRY FUCKING STYLES. I L O S T IT . I don’t really care if other people like fan fiction about real people but to me it’s a bit weird when they’re like an actual person (ig bc I don’t wanna see them in that light) so I stopped reading after a while and forgot about it Then Kurtis Connor makes a video talking about it then I was like “man this plot is really familiar-“ AND THEN ITS BASED OFF THAT STORY THEY JUST CHANGED THE NAMES I LOST MY SHIT PART 2- And now I find this video I swear the universe just doesn’t want me to forget about the time I accidentally read 1D fanfiction😭
This is hilarious honestly I read all of the fics (bc back in the day I did read rpf which now makes me cringe so hard) and when I tell you I SCREAMED in the movie theater when I saw the trailer for the first time... Not out of excitement tho, I was just so fucking shocked. So, obviously, I went to see it when it came out and it was the most horrible experience ever bc me and my bff kept remembering the fanfic. So, we almost got kicked out bc they took a quote directly out of the fic and we couldn't stop laughing
I agree that these types of fics about real people are creepy. I spent a lot of time on wattpad as a teen and moved elsewehere as an adult and still think so. Only upside are funny videos where youtubers reenact fics about them (like Drew and Danny that one time)
I'm an author on Wattpad and when I heard it was being made into a movie, I had never read it, but knew it was quite the popular fan-fiction. I was super curious as to how they were going to pull that off. Just as horrible as anticipated and I wonder how awful the story was. I'm genuinely shocked a woman older than me wrote the story/stories and thought such an abusive relationship was adorable and that people actually loved it. I clearly have a lot of problems with these haha.
I absolutely live your sponsor, these kind of things are so important and its time companies acknowledge that there’s a lot of body types and ways to express yourself without wanting to fit in stupid unattainable and unnatural standards. Feels good to be represented💖
my friend and I watched all these together. even saw the last one in the theater 😂😂 it was so painful but watching you comment on them is cathartic. please do more!!!
4:35 IKR! Noah was supposed to be like, the "nice guy" or whatever but he seemed borderline crazy... KInd of like he was going to snap because she went out without him oNCE. LIke omg and he was all "I'm dissapointed in you."
They are teenagers and he left her without showing tantrum or being abusive even after she cheated on him.....but people like you blame man on everything...but for you the girl is innocent
I watched all your videos today after watching this one. You're one of the most refreshing content creators I've stumbled on in a while. I especially love your editing style. Super excited to be subscribed and see where you go.
I always watch After with my boyfriend to have a good laugh . When we meet a new person , sometimes we ask them about this movie , and if they like it, then there is something wrong. I know you shouldn't judge someone by their movie preferences, but strangely people who like this turn out to be toxic.
