Ok, I'm actually annoyed with people hating on Taran. Yes, he starts off as a selfish brat, but he learns to think of others first and gives up his dreams of being a warrior in honor of Gurgi's sacrifice. Its called character development and its what makes characters interesting. If Taran was a static character, meaning he learned nothing and never changed, then hate for him would be warranted. But he does change and seems like people, including Nick, don't really notice the importance of it. I have never even watched the movie myself (only clips and reactions) and I still see it.

I’m sorry but did you watch the reaction? At the end he literally describes exactly what you said. He said in the first part he thought he was really snobby but he grew on him towards the end. I just don’t see how you think Nick was thinking of him as static when he clearly stated the change.

Funny thing is, through out the whole movie Gurgi was supposedly a coward, but then at the end of the film he was willing to die for his friends. There is nothing braver or more heroic then self sacrifice.

And then Taran sacrificed his pride and dreams of being a warrior to save Gurgi. Being a hero isn’t about swords and victories it’s about friendship and sacrifice. It’s great character growth for everyone.

Fun fact: The Horned King was voiced by John Hurt. In behind the scenes video that’s here on RU-vid, John Hurt (Olivander from Harry Potter) described the idea of the King’s voice as being dredged from the bowels from the earth. He also said it was quite hard for him to speak like that.

Taran has a journey to make. For him to become a real hero, he has to give up on yearning to be a Big Important Hero out of storybooks. So yes, initially he is self-important and arrogant, and less than admirable. You felt there was something wrong here, because most fantasy heroes (including 'hero's journey' characters like Luke Skywalker) are basically admirable people from the start rather than learning and earning your admiration. This is a feature, as they say, not a bug.
@HunterSlayer2727

It kinda makes Taran more realistic in that sense as he's flawed and learns to be a true hero and friend by giving up his personal glory for his friend back. I love Gurgi so much. He's compared alot to Jar Jar which I think disservices him so much as he's much more likeable, visually cute and silly as well as being plot significant as without him the Horn King would still be alive to rule his army.

@@Nicamon Wart was I think more of a wimp. Taran was someone who desired to be great without much work. True, he's a kid with illusions of grandeur, which is normal for kids his age, but it's not something you entirely root for. We wished he could succeed, but not in the way he expected. Besides, what's the point of having a character that you cheer for from the very beginning if at the end, you still do? It's better to see them grow and see the character development more noticeably.

Something to remember about the tone and style of this movie, and its flaws: Production was started in the wake of films like Rankin/Bass's The Hobbit, Ralph Bakshi's animated Lord of the Rings, The Dark Crystal and Willow. There was a fantasy craze on, and Disney was jumping in with both feet, trying to be dark enough to be taken seriously while still being cartoony enough for kids. Also, it was after Don Bluth left Disney to form his own studio, making his own success with darker, more intense films. Many of Disney's veteran animators were retiring, and a lot of the new talent left with Bluth, so the crew of The Black Cauldron was full of newcomers who were having to learn the art of storytelling with animation as they went on.

I actually watched a really interesting video about it not too long ago, called "Yesterworld: The Troubled History of Disney's "The Black Cauldron" & The Lost Cut Scenes" by Yesterworld Entertainment. It tells a LOT about the troubled backstory and production of TBC and how many problems it had with being made in the first place. It's super fascinating, and I highly recommend it. (For one thing, Jeffrey Katzenberg cut about 12 minutes of the film out. ESPECIALLY scenes that involved Fluter. He *hated* Fluter for some reason.)

FUN FACT TIME! While the movie had bad receptions in theaters and all and was one of the more forgotten movies, it has had love! In Disney Toyko there used to be a adventure walkthrough called Cinderella Castle Mystery Tour, and in it there were several Disney villains within the plot. And one of them was actually the Horned King! It's a interesting little thing to know that the villain was at least in something at the Disney Parks.

I recommend watching a documentary about the making, release, and fan backlash of this movie. Yes, its image has improved with time, but this movie has had difficult time finding an audience even to this day. I think you should watch the Nostalgia Critic review for a balance take. Fun Fact: The movie is loosely based upon the first two books in Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles ("The Book of Three" and "The Black Cauldron"). The Chronicles, in turn, are loosely based on the mythology of ancient Wales, a collection of tales known as the Mabinogion.

While I’ll admit that The Black Cauldron is a decent film, I will also say that this would have probably worked better as a TV show just to get the characters more fleshed out, and having a better developed story overall. Still, even if I wouldn’t rewatch this film as much as say Lion King, Princess & The Frog, Zootopia, or some of those, I would definitely take The Black Cauldron over a film like 2004’s Home On The Range (I bring up that film since both The Black Cauldron, and Home On The Range were responsible for killing off Disney animation, or at least hand-drawn animation, or so the story goes). Either way, it was definitely cool to have a Disney film that had a Lord Of The Rings kind of feel. Well, great job yet again, I would say either 6.5, or 7/10 at least for me.

It's really interesting to see how they use, adapt, and evolve certain character types or designs over various movies. And of course I love the Gollum/Gurgi similarities and figuring out how inspired by Tolkien they were in the speech pattern (it's as iconic as Yoda, so I don't think it happened on its own), and then wondering how much Andy Serkis may have been inspired by Gurgi as well; the movements are somewhat similar for Smeagol's behavior. But, I find I notice all of this stuff because I'm not a big fan of the protagonists or the antagonists at all, and the plot is a bit weak for me.

As it is a Movie to several books, a few smaller details get lost (which is normal, as you can't show everything in the short span of the movie), yet it doesn't lose it's overall charm and story. Two things I never got. 1. how does a skeleton count as a sacrifice? 2. how can the cauldron tell the difference b between a forced sacrifice to raise the dead and a living sacrifice to stop them

The answer, as always, is either "Bad screenplay" or "Magic".

Honestly story wise the film is kind of unbalanced, they spend so much time on certain parts that it meant there really wasnt any time left to do a proper climactic battle. The fairies were entirely unnecessary as was the bard. There were also many scenes that sort of dragged on silently. If they'd done a more climactic battle such as the dragon fight in sleeping beauty but cut down some of the fluff stuff the movie would probably be one of the top movies ever.

If you haven't seen it yet I'd like to recommend 'Flight of Dragons', it's one of my favorite dragon films along side Dreamworks Dragons and the first Dragonheart(which I also recommend if you haven't seen it).

Awesome reaction! This movie is definitely underrated. I think you would really enjoy the animated series RWBY. It is an awesome fantasy/adventure series with cool fight scenes, a great storyline, and lots of comedy too. It also contains lots of emotional moments where you become attached to the characters. I think you would enjoy the art style too. The company, Rooster Teeth, has every episode for all 8 seasons up on their website for anyone to watch for free. Each episode is around 20 minutes. They also don’t care if people show the whole episode (songs included) in their RU-vid reaction videos!
