I cry every time I watch the scene where Boromir is saying his last words. The first thing he says to Aragorn isn't anything about being in pain or how he's dying. He just says, "They took the little ones!" Boromir is an extremely flawed character and so susceptible to the power of the Ring but he was an honorable man to his end. I also love watching his relationship with Merry & Pippin. He teaches them how to fight with a sword and loved them so much that he gave his life for them.

Add to that, it's his father that poison his mind toward the ring. It's Denethor crave of the power of the ring that lead to his son's destruction. If you watch the extended edition of the Two Tower, you will know that.

Fun fact, in the books "The eye of Sauron" is just a metaphor for Sauron having spies everywhere and being able to see great distances with his Palantir (Wizard Orb), but the movies decided to make him a literal giant eye to have some kind of image for the audience to know him by. A great change imo

The more you learn about Boromir and his relationship with his brother and father, you begin to understand what his motivation is. He only desires to help his countrymen and please his father. He loves his brother very much as well. His death hurts more and more when you realize how much a flawed character he is and yet his humility and honor is what he is remembered for the most. Despite what he said to Frodo when he was corrupted by the ring (Curse you and all the halflings!) he returns to protect Merry and Pippin and gives his life protecting them as long as he could. I love that Aragorn wears his bracers after his death. In fact, Boromir's death is part of Aragorn's journey and a catalyst for his change from wanderer to king.

Having the Eagles carry the Ring to Mordor has some major problems: firstly, the quest depended almost entirely on secrecy. Giant honkin' eagles are anything but surreptitious, and Sauron has his own evil creatures that could intercept them before they got anywhere near Mount Doom. Secondly, the Eagles are subject to the same sort of temptation and corruption as anyone else - recall how Gandalf reacted when Frodo offered him the Ring? The film was almost entirely shot on location in New Zealand. Those vistas really are amazing, aren't they? The Shire set still exists as a tourist attraction, though most of the other sets were carefully removed to preserve the natural landscape. Every copy of the _The Lord of the Rings_ novel comes with several different maps. It's fun to look at them and get a measure of where everyone is at a given point in the story, to connect the plethora of place-names to actual locations on the map. Balin, the Lord of Moria, was Gimli's cousin. Some years before, Balin had led an expedition to reclaim Moria, and things went well at first, but eventually all contact was lost. Fun fact about Moria: there was once an ancient between the dwarves of Moria and the elves that lived in neighboring Hollin. The door the Fellowship entered was a relic of that ancient alliance - the password, _mellon,_ was the Elvish word for "friend." Then, well, Sauron happened. The score by Howard Shore is just so unbelievably epic. The movies are fantastic, and the music makes them even _more._ Gandalf the Grey is gone. Sorry. In the novel, it's more explicit that he couldn't be rescued: _'You cannot pass!' he said._ _With a bound the Balrog leaped full upon the bridge. Its whip whirled and hissed._ _He cannot stand alone!' cried Aragorn suddenly and ran back along the bridge. 'Elendil!' he shouted. 'I am with you, Gandalf!'_ _'Gondor!' cried Boromir and leaped after him._ _At that moment Gandalf lifted his staff, and crying aloud he smote the bridge before him. The staff broke asunder and fell from his hand. A blinding sheet of white flame sprang up. The bridge cracked. Right at the Balrog's feet it broke, and the stone upon which it stood crashed into the gulf, while the rest remained, poised, quivering like a tongue of rock thrust out into the emptiness._ _With a terrible cry the Balrog fell forward, and its shadow plunged down and vanished. But even as it fell it swung its whip, and the thongs lashed and curled about the wizard's knees, dragging him to the brink. He staggered and fell, grasped vainly at the stone, and slid into the abyss. 'Fly, you fools!' he cried, and was gone._ The giant statues that the Fellowship pass between are known as the Argonath. They once marked the norther borders of the Kingdom of Gondor, though Gondor is much smaller than it used to be. Poor, poor Boromir. He has my favorite character arc in this movie, possibly the entire trilogy.

The movies skip over the fact that they can speak and that Gandalf has to ask for their help, and ask how far they are willing to fly him in the books. The range is usually a couple hundred miles. Eventually, in the full legendarium, the king of the eagles, Gwahir, tells Gandalf to never ask for a ride again.

The choir during the Bridge of Khazad-Dûm scene is chanting in Khuzdul, one of the many languages Tolkien created. It's the main language spoken by dwarves. The words translate to: Deeper into the earth. The dark grows heavy. Cold snaps our bones. Deeper into the earth. There, the glint of Mithril sharp and far away. Deeper into the earth. That sound again Dread surrounds us. Can no one hear us? A great shadow Moves in the dark. The earth shakes! Cracks! Splits! Will no one save us? Fire!! Fire in the deep! Flames lick our skin! Fear rips our heart! No! No! No! The demon comes! Good thing it's not ominous or anything, right? 😉

Tolkien doesn't say exactly how many of Gimli's friends and relatives were part of the attempt to retake Moria, but his cousin Balin led it and his uncle Óin was there too. The book does strongly suggest that there were no Dwarves recruited from cities/settlements other than Erebor. Even the Dwarvish cities don't have vast populations, so sadly it seems likely that Gimli would have at least known quite a few of the dead.

That is true. Still, the kind of story Tolkien is drawing from would rarely mention common retainers and menials. So it would still quite likely be a self-sufficient population size (as it's not entirely unreasonable to presume that Erebor at this time had a larger population than the norm in the wake of Smaug's death, reclamation of the treasure, possible cordial contact with Thranduil's people, and the decimation of Orc forces in the region -- plus that the dwarves fully expected to be able to inhabit Khazad-Dûm again. I'm excited to see how many people rush to point out the behind the scenes "thing" in the next movie that always gets said. There is one piece of lore that always gets pointed out for this movie, but I don't see it here yet so I guess I'll give it. I'll try to be brief, very difficult with Tolkien lore. Galadriel gives Gimli three hairs when he asks for one, and Legolas smiles, because there's a backstory there. In the First Age, about 7000-8000 years before, the mightiest of Elves was Feanor. He crafted some really important things that started the huge war of that time and pretty much set everything in motion. He also made those black crystal balls like the one Saruman has. Anyway, he was awesome but kind of a dick, and he had once asked Galadriel for her hair three separate times so he could use it as a crafting material. She refused every time. So giving Gimli three hairs says "you are someone more worthy of this gift than the most powerful of Elves."

I think you don’t see the explanation because that’s an extended scene so he didn’t see it. I think the scene where they receive gifts from Galadriel is the only really important extended scene in fellowship (even though I also love the other ones) because the gifts she gives come into play in the next to films. And it also shows how far gimli comes in his feelings towards elves considering he started out hating them.

Boromir was only a "jerk" due to the Ring's influence - it actively works to exploit each person's desires and weaknesses, showing them seductive visions of their taking the Ring and accomplishing great things with it when, in reality, the Ring would merely use them to accomplish its OWN purpose.....to return to the hand of Sauron. Hobbits are more resistant to the Ring's siren call in part because they harbor no desire for greatness, leaving less for the Ring to exploit. But they're not immune. FYI: Our lead - and heir to the throne of Gondor - is Aragorn (not Aragon).
@BondsProduction

I find it interesting how many people say Boromir "was a jerk most of the time". Almost like they didn't see what he was doing or saying throughout the whole movie. No they judge him by the scenes at the very end.. "he was bad, but then turned good" it's so wrong.
@folcotook3049
@folcotook3049 2 года назад
Boromir was a good, honorable warrior caught between competing priorities and having his heart corrupted by the ring. SMALL SPOILER BELOW for Two Towers and Return of the King (for Cyber Manor - not sure if you've watched them yet) On one hand he has a father and lord who has commanded him to get the ring and bring it back to Gondor. On the other hand he has the decision of the Council of Elrond and the Fellowship's mission to destroy the ring. He is also concerned and worried because he knows Gondor cannot continue to stand against the growing might of Mordor. The ring is using all of this to slowly eat at him to desire possession of the ring to save his beloved country of Gondor and the great city of Minas Tirith. Even when he falters and succumbs to the ring, he still desires to do good. He genuinely believes for that moment that the ring will end up back with Sauron (whether by Frodo's capture or treachery) and it overwhelms anything else that his head or heart might tell him. That is why he tries to take the ring, and the moment he is released from the ring's direct influence he understands what he has done, hence his immediate remorse. Boromir is a tragic character who should have our pity, not our scorn.
@kateiannacone2698
@kateiannacone2698 2 года назад
To be fair, many of the scenes that show him being good and compassionate didn't make the theatrical cut, which is really sad. I think part of him was hurting for another reason that people don't think about (mild spoilers ahead). . . . . Boromir is used to bring perceived a certain way. He's the hero to the people, a beloved older brother to be looked up to by Faramir, and the golden child to his father. While that didn't always affect him in the best of ways to begin with, imagine if you're used to that... and now you're traveling with these new people who are becoming a close, tight-knit group, and they look at him with suspicion. Aragorn has no faith in the race of men in this movie. He was raised in Rivendell by Elrond, who personally saw Isildur fail to destroy the ring, and that colored Elrond's perceptions of the race of men. So what kind of talks do you imagine Elrond had with Aragorn when he was learning about his own people? Which then color his perception of all other men, including Boromir. And. Boromir, who sees the strength and courage of his own people every day as he lives with them, and leads them into battle...is now looking at this outside who is, supposedly, the rightful heir to the kingdom that his family has been ruling for generations... and he refuses to acknowledge them as his own people, clearly thinks they're weak and untrustworthy, and doesn't even seem to want anything to do with them, much less to rule them. And pretty much everyone is reacting with suspicion to him being shady around the ring (which he probably doesn't even realize he's doing). His honor is SO important to him, and these people, with whom he's trying to connect and bond, are looking at him like he's a criminal. "Why do you recoil? I am no thief!" That has GOT to eat at him, which makes him feel Isolated from the group, which makes him more vulnerable to the ring. And not for nothing, but the ring in and of its very nature tries to isolate people. Think about it. It makes you invisible. It pulls you into another realm, away from the people who are the source of your strength. They can't see you because you're hiding. They can't help you. When you're invisible, you're alone.

Magic in Tolkien's world is somewhat a mystical unknown force of power. Therefore not every kid with a wand can start spellslinging. Saruman and Gandalf are not human, but Maiar, they serve Eru Illuvatar the 'God' of Creation and the Valar who are lesser Gods. The easiest way to see them are representatives of the God in old bodies to contain their power, they are meant to guide the peoples of Middle Earth with words of wisdom. Whilst immortal like the Elves they can die like them; when they either gain such physical wounds that they expire. With Elves they can also pass from grief when their spirit (fea) is diminished to such an extend that they simply wither and fade away. Also a lot of backstory....😘 darling you have no idea. Lots of Lore to love. For some of Tolkien's writing put to song look up Clamavi de profundis Lament for Boromir and Song of Durin to start with.

Sauron is also a Maiar (servant of the Valar). The Valar he served in the beginning was Aule (the Smith) and then he was corrupted by the Valar Melkor, who was later known as Morgoth (the first Dark Lord) and became his greatest servant. Morgoth was essentially the first and greatest evil middle earth ever faced: The equivalent of the Devil, in middle earth lore. Interestingly, the Balrog is also a Maiar who chose to follow Morgoth: though lesser in power to Sauron, who was the most powerful Maiar. Sauron was able to shape shift earlier on in his existence - which is how he managed to deceive people into accepting rings of power. It's all very interesting stuff. Well worth looking at RU-vid channels for middle earth lore - it's how I learned a lot of this!

So the whole thing with Galadriel getting all weird when Frodo offers the ring to him is a little confusing and strange in the movie, so let me add some context for you. Galadriel is the bearer of one of the three elven rings, Nenya. We know what happened to the 9 human rings. They turned their bearers into nazgul (which doesn't help with the reputation for weakness that the race of men gets, but that's another topic). Of the 7 dwarf rings, 4 were consumed by dragons, and Sauron recovered the other 3. The elf rings, though, were hidden from Sauron before he could touch them, so they don't corrupt their bearers like the others. The are currently held by Galadriel, Elrond, and Gandalf. So Galadriel keeps hers hidden. The stories of the horrible which living in the woods is part of how she does it. It keeps people out. But also the power of Nenya keeps Lothlorien, her home and all the people within it, hidden. When she tells Frodo that his coming us as the footsteps of doom to them, that's because, whether he succeeds or not, Lothlorien is in trouble. If he fails, Sauron gets the master ring back, and he can use it to find and control the three rings. There would be no more hiding. But if he succeeds and destroys the ring, then the power of the three would fade with it, and Nenya could no longer sustain Lothlorien. She'd lose her power and her people would lose their home. She's tempted when Frodo offers her the ring because, with it, she could potentially destroy Sauron and eliminate that threat "for good," theoretically. She could protect her people and let them keep their home. But when he offers her the ring in the book, she actually is in full control of herself as she explains that, if he gave her the ring, he would set up a queen in place of the dark lord, and that would be no better. The part where the lights get all weird is just for a second, because she is tempted and she does reach for it. But she doesn't take it because she knows, like she explains to Frodo, that even if she was able to use the ring to destroy Sauron and save the world from him, it would warp her mind and turn her into a new threat that would be just as bad, if not worse. So she makes the choice not to take the ring and help Frodo destroy it, which means she will lose much of her power and her home. "I will diminish, and go into the West... and remain Galadriel."

Boromir wasnt a jerk for most of the movie, he actually shows how compassionate he is at several occasions, especially towards the hobbits. He's the one teaching them how to fight with swords. He's the one who wants to get off the mountain cause he knows it will kill the hobbits. When they run down the stairs in Moria, he instintively grabs Merry and Pippin and jumps with them. And then after Gandalf falls, he wants to give them a moment to grief. Maybe I felt the same way about Boromir the first time I saw this movie, but after seing the trilogy a bunch of times, you have more sympathy and understanding towards Boromir.

It was super fun watching you take this movie in. It's one of my all time favorites and I love getting to watch people take in the magic for the first time. The setting is absolutely incredible. It's an amazing blend of real life locations, matte paintings, intricate miniatures and cgi to blend them all together. If I remember correctly, the pillars in Moria were based off of a miniature, then multiplied by cgi to get that super neat shot. The giant statues on the river are of Isildur, who cut the Ring from Sauron's hand at the beginning and his brother Anarion, who were both major heroes of men from the Second Age. If you liked Legolas' moves, I can't edit for you to see the next two films, lol Can't wait to see your take on the rest of the trilogy!

In order not to be unfounded about Boromir... Sorry my English. He states that his people are at war with Sauron. His biggest concern are his people. They are dying right now protecting the rest of the world. Btw he has every reason not to accept Aragorn as a king. Throughout the whole journey he cares a lot about hobbits: he teaches them to fight, he carries them on the mountain pass, he jumps with them in Moria on the way to the bridge, after Gandalf's fall he asks to give them some time... There are lots of character moments like that. So how is he "bad" ? He is a brilliant example of how the Ring works, how it can corrupt people through their good intensions, concerns, weaknesses...

What most people think are spells spoken by the wizards and Elves are words of power, making requests for the elements to take action. The white wizard tells the mountain to attack it’s enemies, the grey wizard tells the mountain to go back to sleep. Arwen asked the river to rise up and attack.

These movies were New Zealand! It's it amazing? What is amazing is, especially in the 2nd and 3rd movie, you will see lots of miniatures. Rivendell and Lothlorien in this movie were miniatures. So is Saruman's tower. So there's added CGI, but there are actual structures. This series holds up for so many reasons, including CGI to enhance practical effects.

They couldn't help Gandalf not only because he had just destroyed half of the bridge and the rest of it was very unstable, but also because all this time the goblins have been shooting arrows at them, so there were fat chances the saviour would end up as dead as Gandalf the Grey. @25:55 Hold that thought until extended Two Towers. Here's for Boromir the Underrated and FOR GONDOR Just a fun note: remember glorious King Isildur that got shot with three arrows in the back while trying to escape? What an interesting contrast with one jerk who took three arrows in the chest and stomach protecting "the little ones", even if it's not directly from the books, kudos to PJ for this little twist.

These movie treat this world as a real place that the characters inhabit. We have some exposition, of course, but it doesn't stop to explain every little thing. Sometimes it just throws it out there without a clear explanation, but you get the gist--one example being Arwen giving Aragorn her necklace. The only thing to be careful of is getting the characters and place names... there's a lot of places especially in the second and third film... if you don't pay attention, it can be confusing.

Notice how Boromir almost touched the Ring but did not. Same with Gandalf at the beginning of the movie. In fact, only Ringbearers (Sauron, Isildur, Gollum, Bilbo and Frodo) actually touch the Ring itself. All others handle it by its chain.

Four things in no particular order that I've found fascinating: 1. When Olórin (Gandalf) calls Durin's Bane (who was a servant of Melkor just like Sauron was) "Flame of Udûn", he's alluding to Utumno, Melkor's first and greatest fortress during the Years of the Trees. Utumno was likened to Hell on Arda which is fitting considering Utumno translates in two of the elven languages, Sindarin and Quenya as "Hell and "Underworld", respectively. And Melkor (Lucifer), of course, being the greatest of the Valar (Archangels/Gods) by far in his prime who would later become the original Dark Lord and Sauron's master before eventually being cast into the Void at the end of the First Age and after the fact, his Chief Lieutenant (Sauron) succeeding him as the second Dark Lord. 2. When he says "I am a servant of the Secret Fire" he's referencing the Imperishable Flame or alternately, the Flame Imperishable which is the power to create and give life, which is wielded only by the supreme deity of Tolkien's universe, Eru Ilúvatar (Biblical God). 3. When Olórin says something about "the Dark Fire", he's referencing the corrupted power that Melkor wielded that is the exact opposite of what those who remain in the Light wield (the Valar, their Maiar servants, and Ilúvatar), the Holy Light if you will. And lastly, when he says "Wielder of the Flame of Anor", which means "Sun" in elvish, he's referencing Arien, the Maia (regular or lesser Angels) who was selected to be the Guardian of the Sun by the Valar after the destruction of the Two Trees, Telperion and Laurelin (from the trees themselves, the Sun and the Moon are later created by the Valar, with Tilion, another Maia, being selected to be the Guardian of the Moon) that was caused by Melkor's hands (with Ungoliant's help, who was also Shelob's mother) that also kick-started the First Age. In case no one has made that known yet. Honestly, Cyber, you need to read the Silmarillion whenever you have the free time to do so to better grasp and even appreciate the universe Tolkien created.

@4:10 if you want to go down a cool mini rabbit hole about the significance of this door which is just one of the many things in Middle-earth/ Lord of the rings that has a lot of significance that the movie doesn't have time to give credit to that you have to read some of the books to find out but there are some awesome RU-vid channels that break down a lot of this stuff, if you type in something like Mines of Moria door there's going to be a few good channels that show just how much the door means between the friendship that used to be between elves and dwarves and how the door was made by them and why its actually such a tragedy that it was broken down later in the scene by the Watcher in the Water.

Gandalf and the other 4 Istari are just called wizards by men. what they actually are is Maiar, the lesser of the immortal "angelic" beings created by Eru to help sing the world into existence. the Balrogs were also Maia. speculation is that the Balrogs were the Maia that fell under Melkor's influence during the song. the Istari were sent by the Valar (the higher of the immortal "angels") to assist the free peoples of middle earth in their struggle against the shadow. they were forbidden from using their full power except in extreme cases, such as fighting a Balrog. the movies greatly expand on Arwen's role. in the books, she was just some elf chick that shows up at the end to marry Aragorn. in the books, it was Glorfindel, the greatest of all the elves (imo) who found Frodo after Weathetop, and Glorfindel's mere presence is enough to drive off the Nazgul.

One little anecdote about the acting and directing: Christopher Lee (Saruman) and Ian McKellan (Gandalf) are both very accomplished actors. Lee's first day on set was when they shot their first scenes together. At one point, Lee turned to McKellan and said "I'm getting worried, we did 12 takes of this scene and I thought I got it last time." McKellan said "oh don't worry about that, I had 24 takes the other day and that was only a couple of lines. It's just Peter's style." Lee was almost 80 when they filmed these, McKellan was over 60. -- new sub here darlin, looking forward to the next two - and I'd highly suggest looking up Christopher Lee's life and career, he passed in 2015 at the age of 93 and lived quite the life. Be well

So Gandalf isn't a mere wizard. He's nearly as old as time (and Galadriel is far older than he is too). So when he and the Balrog were fighting, it wasn't spells; Gandalf and the Balrog were literal ancient creatures of darkness and light fighting each other. Only one takes on the form of an old wizard.

Boromir's flaws are that of humanity within the story, and more precisely of Gondor. They have lost their way, let history lapse into legend and myth. He (and others) might be aware of what should be done but can't let themselves believe in it fully--at least at first. Boromir starts off seeing himself as the one to fix all things--he's a captain of Gondor. His family has done their best without a *king* so he resists in the beginning. So when he is the first person from Gondor to embrace Aragorn as his king... It's my favorite scene. 🥲

Hi CM and to everyone here, Happy New Year ! This movie is defnitely my most memorable experience of cinema. With a bunch of friends from high school, we went see it a saturday night, 2 or 3 weeks before christmas. As we were already on 1st year of college, some of us already had both a driver's licence and a vehicle, so we planned to go by car (in France, even if you can have you licence at 16, you have to be 18 if you intend driving without an adult supervision). Though, that afternoon, it rained hard, then the temperature went down and the street froze so there were totally impracticable. Thus, we had to let the cars and go by tramway. The screening started like around 20h30 or maybe 20h40. From the moment the movie started, there were absolutely not a slightest noise in the room, though there were like 350 people. I was totally hung by the movie (like most of us, I hadn't read the books by that time). And when the ending credits started, I just couldn't believed it was already 3 hours from the beginning. I could have sworn it was only an hour and a half. We get out, talked about that exceptional movie, and as it was past midnight, we missed the last tramway to go back home (most of us lived like 4 miles/6-7 kilometers from the theatre) the streets where covered in snow and still very slippery so it took us a good hour and a half to went home, but we had so much fun doing so.

A little trivia. At the end, Aragorn takes Boromir's bracers and he wears them for the rest of the trilogy. Also, when Sean Astin was running into the water, he cut his foot and had to be taken to the hospital for stiches. If you know the book The Hobbit, several little easter eggs were in there. The story Bilbo tells at the beginning about the trolls, Frodo and crew pass the rock statues of them in the woods. And when Gandolf talked about the dragon (at the beginning), he did send Bilbo on the adventure where he did indeed help defeat a dragon. It was along the way where he found the ring. Looking forward to seeing what you think of the next 2. And I agree, I'd watch them with the added scenes. Also, Peter Jackson, one of the writers and directors of the films, has cameos in each movie. He was from New Zealand so it was one of the reasons the films were shot there.

Mind you Gandalf and the Balrog are both thousands of years old and are Maiar, which is what Sauron is himself (so basically angels. Sauron and the balrog are corrupted Maiar who followed Melkor aka Morgoth because they were entranced by his splendor and he was the most powerful Valar, which are the equivalent of gods and goddesses serving under their equivalent of God. Getting questions about the eagles earlier than usual, lol. I'm sure there'll be a ton of people saying the same thing, buuuuuut... They don't take the eagles because they're trying to be sneaky. They don't believe it would be possible to just fly in guns blazing without being shot down or otherwise taken out fairly easily. They're hoping to sneak under the radar by travelling quietly on foot. (Also, for an explanation that makes more sense from the perspective of the books, the eagles are actually intelligent. They can and do pick and choose who they want to help and when, and could have just as easily sent the moth back to Gandalf with a piece of paper that said "up yours" if they really felt like it. They aren't 100% reliable and Gandalf probably didn't feel like wasting time negotiating such a dangerous, unappealing request.)

Sadly, Gandalf the Grey is gone for good. Regarding the scene with the Mirror of Galadriel: When Frodo offered her the ring, it was a major turning point for her. She was one of the few people in middle-earth who could (eventually) have used it, but it would have corrupted her in the process, much as she described. And by refusing it, she was released from exile; I will not attempt to summarize the Silmarillion here, but Galadriel was a leader of the Noldor who pursued Morgoth (the first Dark Lord) into middle-earth; when Morgoth was overthrown, most of the Noldor were allowed to return to Valinor, but not the leaders. And Galadriel was almost the only one left by then.
