Brilliant! Many thanks. Before seeing your video I had spent the best part of an hour trying to work out which tap to turn off, assuming it would be on a pipe that felt warm. Once I'd seen you show that it was the downward pipe from the attic, it worked straight away.

have to say this helped loads - was about to drain system - but thanks to this I managed to search out the cold water feed - made the job so easy - (another failed push in fix replaced by a reliable compression fitting!!!) -

Thanks for the simple explanation. I need to turn off the hot water to replace a leaking valve that's feeding a washing machine (an old machine with both hot and cold feed).

So, crucially, will isolating the cold supply to the tank create a sufficient vacuum to be able to drain hot water pipes and work on taps?

Thanks for the reply. I found the 3rd handle. I opened them all and the pressure is back to normal and the water is hot again. I'll have a professional have a look. Thanks again.

Hi, The video is great. I looked at your video but I have the same type boiler but I can not find the spinning thing to turn the hot water off. If you have any idea or if you want me to send a picture of my boiler please let me know. Any suggestion will be highly appreciated! Thanks.

I'm currently facing a issue with which red handle to switch off, there are two one on each side one of them goes in the back of the system. If I was to assume that the one leading from the cold water system to the hot water was the right one could I possibly do any damage to the hot water system itself? Will it explode if I move the wrong one?

My water is getting too hot and a plumber came and replaced the tank thermostat but it hasn't made any difference. Can you explain how the thermostat actually works please. He says I need a new 3 way valve-is that right? If the thermostat activated this valve why doesn't the actuator turn when the thermostat switches off? I have a conventional oil boiler and radiators.

Very clearly explained. I have followed the instructions and all hot water taps now shut off except the one in the cloakroom, which is the one I want to change. What have I missed?
@diydoctor
@diydoctor 9 лет назад
Assuming the cloakroom is downstairs Dave it may be that it is just water in the pipe and it needs draining off. Other than that it may be that it is fed in another way from the video.In that case I'm afraid we wouldn't be able to help you.To diagnose we would have to have a pretty clear idea of how your sytem was plumbed in in the first place.
@yonderdave1
@yonderdave1 9 лет назад
DIY Doctor Thanks Doc. Cloakroom is ground floor, but so is kitchen and utility which stopped as soon as hot feed turned off. It's been trickling for a couple of hours now which must be too much for pipes so perhaps draining the cylinder. I'll trace the pipes back to see if it is fed a different way.

Dave Hayward Do let us know how you get on Dave, it may help someone else. Good luck
@diydoctor

Dave Hayward Thinking about it Dave if its onlt tricling it might be a faulty vale which is not shutting off properly.

DIY Doctor Just what I wondered, and you are right Doc. I fully opened and then shut the valve 3 or 4 times and the tap is now just dripping and will eventually stop I think. Too late now today so everything back on and I will try again in the morning. Thanks again Doc.

Hi I changed my heating pump. I also had to change my micron 30ff pcb as it had the software error. Ever since my pump has constantly been running now I'm not sure how it was before with the old pump but noticed the thermostat on the cylinder was t 65 now turned it down to 50 and all is good again. Pump shuts on and off as it should. But my question is why can't it go any higher, is this because pump is not fast enough or rads on to high when balancing so it's stealing all the heat?? I'm happy at 50 and same as niebours now as they have same house and setup. Thanks for help. Oh it's a new grundfos pump. On setting 2 . Old one was a wilo gold 50

Use an adjustable spanner or a pair of grips to open and close your valve. Making sure you don't ruin the shape of the valve end. If you do your new handle will slip when turning then you are worse of when you started.

hi. I have a similar system to the video, however there are 3 valves in the cupboard.Two of the valves look like the one in the video ( red circular tap handle), the third is also red, but is straight, about 6 inches long. Should I turn all three off to turn off the hot water?
@diydoctor
@diydoctor 9 лет назад
Impossible to say from here Andy. Follow the instructions in the video first and if the hot water is still on then you need to trace the cold feed to the tank in order to turn it off. It may well be your "third tap" and providing the boler is off you can do no harm by turning it off also.

Hi there. I had an issue a few months ago where the pressure of the shower dropped and ultimately stopped working. The plumber that came out to fix it said that simply, the red round handle had been closed. Still don't know how that happened. Anyway, the pressure is dropping again and the shower is cold. I checked the airing cupboard and i can see 2 red round handles. 1 is coming from the loft and 1 is next to the big tank thing. They're both closed off. Is this right or should i open them up? Thanks in advance. I have a pump added to to system after having a new bathroom fitted.
@diydoctor
@diydoctor 9 лет назад
Im really sorry Slurms but this is a question we dare not answer online without an investigation of your system. We have no idea what type of system you have or how the shower is fitted and without knowing a few things for sure it is just not safe or sensible for us to guess at how your valves keep turning themselves off.

Hello, what if the valve is stuck ? I'm a leaseholer in a council property and just want to replace the taps but cannot turn off the hot water. Thank you
@diydoctor
@diydoctor 10 лет назад
Hi Roma, take a look at our page on unjamming water valves www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/jammedwatervalves.htm . If this works, great. If not then you may have to callina plumber as it's quite possible the tap needs to be replaced and we do not know from here what type of system you have.If its the usual gravity fed hot water system with a cold tank in the roof and a hot tank/immersion in the airing cupboard, then draining the cold (after turing it off at the rising main) and then draining the hot through the downstairs hot taps should empty the water system to allow you to change the hot valve. However, if you have never done this type of thing before we strongly advise you to call a plumber.

very disappointing. All I want to do is turn off the hot water supply so that I can change a mixer tap in the kitchen. A very basic question. This is barely addressed in this series of vids other than a vague description of the immersion heater piping which in this example is conveniently labelled. Mine isn't as I'm sure others won't be and there is no obvious cold inlet at the bottom. Should have spent more time on possible variations for different heaters, instead of the irrelevant stuff in the kitchen vid about filters etc.
@diydoctor
@diydoctor 10 лет назад
Sorry we could not describe your particular system for you. Every hot water tank has a cold inlet, it is this cold inlet which pushes the hot water out. The fact that your cold inlet is not obvious is a bit strange, there is only one pipe which goes into the bottom of a hot water tank and that is the cold inlet. Turn that off and no hot will come out. You are quite right it is a very basic question and we have supplied an equally basic answer. Turn off the cold supply to the hot tank and no how will come out. Sorry this seems to have passed you by. The reason the valves and pipes are labelled in this house is because the owner asked a plumber to explain them all to him so he knew what to do if he needed to do any maintenance. This cost him £85 for the plumbers time. We have tried to do it for nothing and everyone else appears to be very grateful. What seems to be irrelevant to you in this video, is very helpful to thousands of people so we are told.
