This is an excellent tutorial from (at last) someone who *really* does know what he is talking about ... The DIYDoctor, is in a totally different league to some very dodgy 'plumbers' dominating these DIY pages here on RU-vid!

Thank you for your video. I have a 'direct combination tank' (hot & cold tank in one unit). Luckily, I phoned the manufacturer of a shower pump before buying. I was told, I can't use a shower pump with my sort of tank, as I would an additional 50 gallon cold water tank (which I don't have space for as it is a ground floor flat). :-( I was going to connect the cold shower tap by mains.....

In your video, you say it is bad for air to get into the shower pump. So it means you must always have water in the tank. But what happens, if the the water company turn off the water?? Speaking as a novice, should n't there be any auto cut-off to protect the pump?.

Do I need a separate feed form the cold tank or can I see off?

The power shower uses a lot of water, very quickly. You should always connect the cold (and hot) feed for a power shower directly to the tank as this ensures a constand feed pressure when the shower asks for water. If you tee off, and then someone else uses water from the tank to flush a loo or take a bath, the pressure is reduced going to the shower which could damage it. Hope this helps

You said 100 Gallon tank? That's 450 litres seriously???

Its really important not to under-estmate the water pumped through a power shower. In a lot of case a 50 gallon tnk may suffice but this will give you a 6 minute shower at full blast and this supposes that the inlet to your cold tank has a good enough flow to fil it up again quickly. For a family, a power shower tank needs to be an absolute minimum of 70 gallons and this is achieved (usually) by adding a atnk and connecting it to your existing tank. We say 100 gallons because tis way it can be guaranteed that your shower will not rund dry when your family are using it.
