This water jerry can hack uses food grade hose, costs less than $15 and takes 10 minutes to do. Perfect water jerry can setup for camping and setting up in your 4wd. No pump or power is required. The clear hose also allows you to see your water level in the water jerry can.
I use a PROQUIP 22lt water jerry can (purchased from BCF, Anaconda etc). I purchased the parts from my local Irrigation/plumbing business. These a parts can also be purchased at Bunnings.

20mm to 13mm Barb $1.15
2 x 11-16 hose clamps $2.60
13mm inline barb with tap $5.65

I did this but found the 20mm to 13mm barb that screws in the jerry was a bit dodgy, seems to flex a bit in the jerry and jump out of the threads or not seal properly , even with thread tape. Ended up having a slow leak that I didn't realise and water thru the back of the car.. I wasn't using the pro equip can however was using a bunnings water jerry (green one) so maybe it is because of that. I'm now looking at just putting a hose in the top cap to the bottom and having a little breather so that it can't leak everywhere
@OverlandUnknown
@OverlandUnknown 3 года назад
G'day Mark, I know the bunnings jerry you are talking about. I looked at them but went with the ProEQUIP jerry for that reason, the bunnings jerry are cheaper and they aren't as solid as the ProEQUIP jerries. The siphon method you said will also work well too. Cheers for the comment, Grant.
@nyjl007
@nyjl007 3 года назад
I bought the same ProQuip jerry can from TentWorld. It's a really good unit, but I had exactly the same issue as you. I'd screw in the 13mm fitting and it would jump threads before it was fully tight. Part of the issue is the length of the barb's screw. It was a little too long and would hit the limit of the jerry's screw-in socket (if that makes sense). I cut two or three millimetres from the barb's screw with a hacksaw and it tightened much better. I also placed a Nilex garden hose fitting at the end of the hose, followed by a click-in hose connector, which was then screwed into the a Pope tap fitting. This allows you to fill the jerry simply by unclicking the tap fitting from the hose and and connect it to a standard garden tap (providing you've kept the hose long enough to reach).

What was your method to prevent the jetty can sucking in? Im thinking of tapping a hole up top and wrap a bit of hose around and into a filter to prevent water being able to splash out
@OverlandUnknown
@OverlandUnknown 2 года назад
There is no sucking in pressure as its gravity fed. I loosen off the 2nd smaller cap which allows air in. I leave this second cap loosened all the time, and have never had water splash out. Hope this helps. Cheers.

@michaelnugara1
@michaelnugara1 2 года назад
Hi mate I've heard that particular jerry can had issues with leaking at the thread. Have you had any issues? The only concern I have with doing it your way, which I may still do, is that if the fitting gets damaged during a trip you can lose all the water. I might go in thru the lid which is another option.

Don’t do it. Knock the barb or tap and you bust the plastic around the fitting making the plastic jerrycan unusable :(.
@anthonyyounghusband5917
@anthonyyounghusband5917 3 года назад
Another way is to modify a lid and siphoning the water up through the lid and use gravity for the water to flow. Yes you still can still break the attachment at the top of the lid but you don’t damage the jerrycan. I use a standard clip on hose fittings on the lid with an inline tap and clip on hose fitting at the pour end. I can clip in a hose from a water tap to refill. This way you can lay the jerrycan down or have it sit up. You can transfer the lid to the square 25 L water drums as well
@anthonyyounghusband5917
@anthonyyounghusband5917 3 года назад
Iv also made a fitting to add air into the jerrycan. By adding a small amount of air. Clip in a hose trigger shower fitting. Bingo a pressurised bush shower.
@OverlandUnknown
@OverlandUnknown 3 года назад
Anything can break in the back of the canopy. I've had no issues with mine. Like anything, be careful with your stuff and they'll last a long time. I also carry a few spare connections for that exact reason if accidentally breaking one. Cheers.
