Chinese cultural norms can be confusing for Westerners. How should you dress? Can you serve others using your own chopsticks? Who pours who tea? Who pays? In this video geared towards a non-Chinese audience, I breakdown what to do during a traditional meal to leave a positive impression on Chinese parents - most applicably those who are first-gen, born in Asia.

Very well explained. Can also include 1. greeting & bidding goodbye to parents at table before & after the meal - i.e., if one is already seated at the table waiting for the parents to arrive, one must stand up to greet them; just as if the parents leave first, one must stand up to say goodbye. 2. knowing that the best seats are the inside one, i.e., those furthest away from the door/exit, and must be reserved for the parents. 3. the parents must be the first people to touch their chopsticks to start eating.

SUPER helpful, thank you. There's not a lot of content out there that covers this. I'm meeting my Chinese girlfriend's parents in Singapore early next year so I'm doing my homework in preparing as I want to make a great first impression. If there are other tips you have such as what types of gifts to give (should I also have a gift for her older brother?), should I wear a suit, should I stay at a hotel vs staying with her, etc. that would be amazing and appreciated.

There is this boy I am friends with, and he is from China (I am starting to think I like him, oh no). I have always loved learning about different cultures and learning new languages, so this video is very helpful! We are planning on one of us visiting the other sometime in the future, wether he comes to America or I visit in China. Thank you!

It was such an interesting video! Thank you so much for sharing all these informations with us and teaching us for the techniques and tricks😊 Your videos have such an excellent quality, I can see how much work you put into them. As for some recommended topics, I think you should stick with these kind of topics a bit more, since you can share your own personal opinions. For example, you could talk about "how to impress your Chinese significant other's Chinese family (parents, grandparents)", "what things you should avoid with Chinese people", "what are uncomfortable or sensitive topics for Chinese people in general", "what gifts do Chinese parents like the most", "what are the differences between western and chinese cooking" etc. I would be really interested on these videos honestly. I hope in the future we might see some of these topics.😊 Keep up with the good work!🥰

4:10 when I paused this exact moment of your video (for a little time) and went back to my series there was this American character making fun of something related to tea and one of the British characters almost started a fight with him 🤯

I have religious and other dietary preferences. Can you give any advice for some one who can't eat 90% of the food in a Chinese restaurant.

The finger tapping custom is very specific to only Hong Kong, & Guangzhou province. I had explained the tea tapping story when I worked in Shanghai and my Chinese colleagues told me they don’t do that nor ever heard of this story in the rest of mainland China, they just say thank you or nod their head.
@CrystalClues
@CrystalClues 3 года назад
Hi Cynthia! Thanks for weighing in. I definitely believe it. My father’s side is from that province and that is probably why this was such a common practice that I saw growing up watching others do it at dim sum restaurants. I want to thank you for clarifying because I am not a historical expert or anthropologist 😅 but as long as the intent is clear with the finger tapping, I believe most well-meaning recipients of a refresh on their tea, who come from that background, would still recognize it as a sign of respect and appreciation.
@cynthianei450
@cynthianei450 3 года назад
@@CrystalClues You’re welcome. My father is also from HK, so the first tapping custom is typical in dim sum restaurants, so the lack of finger tapping in Shanghai & Beijing when I ate out with my mainland Chinese colleagues was a very apparent stark difference.
@CrystalClues

If I’m ever around mainland Chinese friends again I’ll tap the table if they pour me tea and see if they notice 🤣 (hopefully soon... COVID has made indoor dining rather challenging if not nonexistent in a lot of counties these days). Be safe and healthy, Cynthia!

I have to stop and think at the "take off your shoes" part, does it mean that in western society, in general, you don't take off your shoes when you visit somebody's house? In here, people will stare with with their jaw dropping 😲😲
