It's not off-roading without a broken CV here and there ha ha! But, the sound of a breaking CV hurts deep in the soul ! Cheers!

@4WD is Life Thanks, great video. While I was watching I was thinking of how to avoid breaking CVs on obstacles like this. If it had a rear locker, maybe the driver would not have had to approach the obstacle so aggressively so the CV would not have snapped? Front locker might also help, but could also put more stress on the front Cvs. Seems like you thought about this so let me know your thoughts.

I completely agree. I think a rear locker would be sufficient, and if you want a front locker you really have to know when to engage and how to drive with the front locker on, it can cause the front axle and diff to stress.

Dang! My fully stock 2005 LX470 sounded just like that last weekend. And all I was doing was exiting the freeway, waited for the traffic light to turn green, then as soon as I pressed the gas pedal, all I heard was that grinding noise and no movement…kinda how I stumbled upon this video 😅 If by some chance @4WD you see this message, what ended up being the problem with the car?
@4WDisLife
@4WDisLife 7 месяцев назад
Hey. Sorry that happened to you. It ended up being a blown front differential together with some broken cv axles.

Hi gents, I had on my 2001 same issue. Front axle under soil, rear axle in the air, push gas and listen just iron rotary noice. After dismantle whole diff was clearly visible, how Crown wheel lost several teeth :-( Now I have another whole diff from scrap yard. Work fine, but I do not want risk same issue somewhere in outback. Please does anyone know some OEM supplier (Australia?) who make pinion wheel and crown wheel in better quality than original? Thanks

I’d say I am not sure sorry can’t help you there

Btw. you can drive a Landcruiser in RWD only. Just disconnect the front cardan drive and lock the center dif. If the front dif is busted you might have to remove the front driveshafts too.

That poor car was just telling everybody it was all too much without some form of terrain control or lockers.

I feel all 100s should remove the front sway bar before offroad, or replace front diff with a lsd / locker.

It needed lockers for that type of environment and with that much gear on it. They heavy as is and adding more to it isn't really good without adding more power and torque and also them Lockers to even out the power output. We take Lockers for granted, I need lockers for my Cruiser as well 🤦🏾. I was able to do it in a terrain like that but stock and A/T tires
@4WDisLife

100%. Under some situations, locker is all that’s needed.

Still don't understand how the LC100 axle/diff could break. He didn't send that hard

Lc100 front diff is made of glass apparently 😂

I had same issue. Front wheels was under soil, rear wheels in the air. I push so much gas for recovery. Just listen iron noise and front diff was k.o. Few teeth from crown wheel was broken. Front diff on J10\LX470 is small and pure. After facelift was changed pinion wheel shape and it is better.

Your comment around the 13:00 mark is not true. I've blown my front diff on my 100 before. Just disconnect the front propeller shaft, remove axle drive flange, lock transfer case, and drove 300 miles home as a rear wheel drive. Besides that, great video!
@DuanDao

Weren't early year LC prone to this with the weak pinion gear?
@mr.nguyen8413
@mr.nguyen8413 2 года назад
@@DuanDao yes. 98-99 lc/lx470 had 2 pinion front diff that wasn’t as strong as the later 4 pinion design

I was going to ask this because I've blown my front diff and drove home twice (unfortunately) as a rear wheel drive. However I have a 4runner with part time so I didn't have to disconnect the drive shaft.

Overloaded with all this shit. The car is like 2.7T empty and looks like additional 0.5-1T. Dump the Steeo Bumper. Remove all the additonal weight from behind the rear axle. The car will drive way better, and yes just get a rear locker.
@4WDisLife
@4WDisLife Год назад
Good points. He did get regear front and rear lockers out of this incident.
@lukasmeyer1992
@lukasmeyer1992 Год назад
@@4WDisLife A regear will maybe allow to drive slower offroad, but it will not save your axles from all the weight. I would remove as much weight as possible from the car. This is why we no longer went for Steel bumpers on the Montero.
