We Can't Afford To Attend A Wedding

I think if you hold a destination wedding thats fine, but its polite to hold a low-key function at home for everyone to attend, even if its a backyard BBQ. My step brother got married in Korea because thats where he met his now wife. But they held a party in our country as well.

@@superkmpm I really like this idea. I would personally bring a couple of things back from that country to share at the party just to make everyone feel a bit more included (I usually hate that term but for parties, well I am Italian LOL).

I'm in just this situation now withy niece. I can afford it if you put a gun to my head, but the expense relative to a two day affair is out of line with my charitable values of living frugally

I agree, but sometimes that is hard to admit to family. Saying you don't have money to family/friends is can be hard. Especially if they cannot understand your situation.

my parents are the opposite. they are wealthy but keep trying to bully me into giving them money which for a time when i lived under their roof, i complied. but when my time came, i moved out. Now they still try to make me spend money when they come to visit by request expensive meat dishes to be cooked and consume a packet of gallon milk over a weekend. but i wont give them a penny beyond that.

Destination weddings aren't selfish. You don't have to go. I got invited twice, out of country weddings. I went to one because she is one of my closest friends and didn't go to the other.

Well... turns out they have 100k income (ish). The biggest problem is she is in this mess and still hasn't tried to remedy anything with a budget. Cannot even give a definite answer on their income.

It shouldn't need an explanation anyway. A destination wedding also entails taking off work and other obligations. People can't expect others to disappear from their lives for a week or weekend.

Before I married her father, my stepdaughter pulled this--destination wedding in Hawaii. They were divorced within a year. So glad I didn't go. She also commented that I would have to buy a different dress because the one I bought wasn't good enough or didn't match something or somebody, although it was a beautiful I bought it just for the occasion, before I found out where the wedding was going to be.. A couple years later I was invited to her second wedding very close to where I was living. She told me all the "mothers" were wearing black. She grew up so much between those two weddings. I'm glad I stood my ground. She has a solid second marriage and is an excellent mother.

I think she was trying to be realistic of how much actual free cash they get, but a 50k salary doesn't reduce to 30k.

@@KatieBellino agreed. I look at my actual take home income to budget. However, you would be surprised how much net can vary from gross. Tax bracket, location, health insurance cost, pension payments, etc. Close to 40% income loss is less outrageous than you might think.

Even if he just started his job it was annoying to me that it took so long for her to mention it. Not sure why it was so annoying to me, but it was nonetheless. 😘

I have two sons, both very young. I've already decided that when they get married, I'll chip in $50 per person for all of the groomsmen if they rent tuxes OR $100 per person if they buy suits. You can get a really nice suit for the same cost as a tux rental.

To that add, the wedding present and the spending while there, which I can tell it's not going to be ship. Specially in DR family members think people living in USA "HAS IT ALL" soon add another $2,500.00 to that or they will eat you alive. That's a NO,NO CAN'T GO.
